the whole dang plalist is linking to the cover image above it. Someone didn't close an html tag.

Thanks for the link tips. As to the portion of the Joe Frank story that started at about 4:25, I guess we're supposed to take it that this guy NOW THINKS he worked at NIH.

I thought Joe was saying Calgary, not Calvary. Would have been such a different piece. And yet so very real. Not to mention a fitting eulogy to the King Edward Hotel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Sem Chumbo:

Joe's been reading Greys Anatomy.
  4:49pm
Robert:

I just realized one of the funniest things Joe Frank does is recite lists, including compound phrases consisting of lists. Timing's a large part of it.
Avatar 4:50pm
glenn:

no, calgary and calvary are pretty similar. calvary is warmer.
Avatar 4:50pm
ifny:

They used to keep a copy of Grey's Anatomy behind the counter at the King Eddie. Behind the counter = past the plexi window + bars. It was a low rent hotel with the best blues bar north of the 49th. Strip club during the day. And apparently there was an amateur anatomist vein running through the place...
Avatar 4:50pm
glenn:

you've been to the king eddy, ifny?
Avatar 4:51pm
glenn:

wait. i'm talking about the king eddy in toronto. is there one in calgary?
Avatar 4:51pm
ifny:

@glenn Never been to Calvary, but I'll take your word for it. Chinooks be damned. I'm guessing the people in Calvary are warmer too.
Avatar 4:52pm
ifny:

@glenn Didn't know there was a King Eddie in T.O.
Avatar 4:53pm

oh yeah. it's not low rent at all. high tea costs 125$ per person.

@glenn King Eddie in Calgary closed after 99 good years. It was on the skids and the train line, and right next to City Hall and the best trans-fashion supply store in town. You could buy sleeves of beer for $1.50. Great gigs and sweet crowds. After it closed in 2004, there were years of schemes to re-open it, but asbestos, lack of imagination and the flood finally killed that idea. It's being demolished, if it hasn't already been.
Avatar 5:01pm
Carmichael:

Hey ifny, I heard the King Eddy is being "disassembled and stored" while they build some kind of music society building around it. They swear they're gonna put it back.

dale:

is this a hocus pocus/the story in your eyes guitar line mashup?
  5:06pm
Robert:

Dan Aykroyd has/had a delivery somewhat like Joe Frank's, but I don't know if Aykroyd ever worked "in one" like that. You can't get away with pausing like that at all the commas if you're in a scene with someone else, or you come off as an awful ham. Joe Frank writes the commas with that in mind.
Avatar 5:10pm
ifny:

@Carmichael Yeah, it's going to be part the "National Music Centre" from what I've read. It will be cool to see the neon Excalibur up again. But of course it wasn't just the bricks and neon; it was the community, and the revitalization/gentrification looks a little rich to invite/allow that back. And I can't help but wonder to all the old folks they evicted from the hotel. I'm guessing there are no residences in the master plan.
Avatar 5:14pm
ifny:

It's enough to give somebody the blues.
Avatar 5:17pm

Hm looks like Brokeback Mountain used the (defunct) King Eddie bar as a location. That's pretty funny. The King Eddie was a place you could rest assured you *wouldn't* see a cowboy hat (even an ironic one).
