Favoriting January 20, 2015: MICHAEL RIESMAN & CHASE SPRUILL Glass & Blood: Concert Works from the Bloodiest Film Scores by Philip Glass
Pianist Michael Riesman and violinist Chase Spruill join Morricone Island to discuss their upcoming NY premiere on Monday, January 26th at Le Poisson Rouge of "Glass & Blood" with new suites from Dracula, Candyman and The Hours for violin and piano. Michael Riesman has been the keyboardist and musical director of the Philip Glass Ensemble since the mid 1970's as well as conductor to Glass' scores including Notes On A Scandal, The Truman Show, Kundun, Hamburger Hill, Koyaanisqatsi, Mishima, The Thin Blue Line and A Brief History of Time and (non-films) Einstein on the Beach and Music in 12 Parts. His own film scores include Enormous Changes at the Last Minute, Pleasantville and Signed: Lino Brocka. Chase Spruill serves as a core faculty member of Community MusicWorks in Providence, RI and has collaborated with Steven Mackey, Alexandra Gardner, Johnny Gandelsman, Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Nyman and Kronos Quartet. The two have upcoming plans of newly commissioned works by Michael Nyman and Nico Muhly.

Speaking of Morricone, our household is partway through viewing "Once Upon a Time in America." Rewatching it reminds me how much Morricone's music is a key part of the picture.
