Good 2015, Doug and all!! The GIF goes well with the snake-oriented song played a few tracks ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Oddly enough, Listener James, I will be playing that Snake song later on during today's GTDS. There are NO coincidences. Happy 2015!

This IS great, Doug. Have to leave soon to go work for a retired Methodist pastor - she usually enjoys your show except for, er, "difficult" jazz, in which case we have to turn back to her music. Cool thing is she knows/knew Almeda Riddle and has some great lps. Also used to co-own a very well-known dulcimer shop, and plays and has tons of great dulcimer music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
Your retired Methodist pastor will probably not enjoy the long Coltrane cut coming up mid-show. Just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

You bet your sweet b/p! (old Laugh-In joke)
Avatar 9:31am hyde:

personally, I'm drowning in difficult jazz lately--thanks to A Darker Shade of Blue...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Boy, you ain't kidding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

More about the "drowning" than the "difficult," obviously.
Avatar 9:35am Erella:

Good new year to you, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Stanley:

Brian, weird indeed, looks like you've got the temperatures we had yesterday.
My current fave label name is Feeding Tube
Avatar 9:37am still b/p:

Old Laugh-In shows are being pitched in an infomercial collection, with producer Schlatter proclaiming how groundbreaking and crazy-in-the-studio it all was. Some of that's true, but I tell ya,
back in the 80s or 90s the shows were rerun for a while somewhere....and despite the childhood and cultural nostalgia, I found them largely unwatchable. I think maybe only small, small doses are the thing.
Avatar 9:38am hyde:

@Doug exactly! those threads are a treasure trove.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Brian in UK:

@still b/p very interesting but ..........

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Stanley:

Yeah, Coltrane doing it to us again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

This Coltrane performance got panned in the Temple University student newspaper. The person who produced the concert ending up APOLOGIZING.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Parq:

Hi, all. Happy New Yar. As near as I can tell, no one has yet noted the passing of Mario Cuomo. As a NY state employee of decades-long tenure, I have a special fondness for him. I will miss him very much, but never more so than whenever I watch his son bow down to the one percent.
Avatar 10:33am hyde:

heh, I like the idea of "music worth apologizing for"
Avatar 10:34am hyde:

(not that i would actually condone having to apologize for this, mind you)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Boy did you say it, Parq. One imagines that son Andrew's centrist extremism must've been killing, if not literally, Mario.
Avatar 10:37am still b/p:

I remember watching the Cuomo moment at the '84 convention and thinking as he wrapped it up, "That was a good speech." And forever after it was "the" speech in tellings of his rise to recognition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Mike East:

good morning. who's drumming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
When Cuomo never threw his hat in the ring, the speculation was always that he was holding out for a Supreme Court appointment. When that never came, the speculation was that somebody somewhere had some major dirt on him.

That keynote speech was spellbinding.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Parq:

I dunno why the Supreme Court eluded him. Some people think he turned it down. As for the Presidency, writer and comic Will Durst said it -- as far as the average American voter was concerned, "Mario" is not the name of the President, it's the name of the guy who operates the Tilt A Whirl when the carnival comes to town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Guido from Cologne:

monster!
Avatar 10:46am hyde:

Robert Kenyatta has to be the one person who played with Coltrane, Wilson Pickett, the Stylistics and The Beach Boys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
I did the pots and pans thing, too. Never ended up with Coltrane, however. AND I WAS GOOD!

@Parq
And we then became a country that elected Barack Hussein Obama. Progress? Progress!
Avatar 10:47am hyde:

@Doug and I bet you never played with the Beach Boys, either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Not after I bitchslapped Mike Love, I sure didn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Parq:

Okay, from a local New York daily:

With Clinton on the verge of formally announcing the nomination, Cuomo reached out to the White House to express his second thoughts, according to accounts by former Clinton aide George Stephanopoulis and author Jeffrey Toobin.

After several days of uncertainty, Cuomo wrote Clinton, "I do not know whether you might indeed have nominated me, but because there has been public speculation, I think I owe it to you to make clear now that I do not wish to be considered," Cuomo wrote.

Clinton himself did not acknowledge that he offered the nomination to Cuomo until a 2012 appearance at a fund-raiser for the homeless at the Waldorf-Astoria.
