Are you doing a Christmas special show too, Jeff(s)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm
Jeff Golick:

We'll let you decide, @doca! C'mon in!
Avatar 12:00pm
Jeff J:

Hey Doca! Our Christmas show involves no actual Christmas music, but lots of tunes centered around Miles Davis who is the reason for the season, if memory serves?

@Jeff G: I want a Christmas free jazz special, if I can decide that.

(is that a Christmas-free jazz-special, or a Christmas free-jazz special?)

Nick Gilder's birthday was yesterday? Damn, I knew I had something to celebrate. I picked up Barnaby Bye's second album yesterday. Coulda wrapped it up and given it to Nick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, Dean.

Nick Gilder is outside my every-shrinking field of vision...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Uncle Michael:

I know not from Barnaby Bye but am now downloading three albums by their bad Alessi Brother-selves. Thanks for the provocative mention, Dean.
Avatar 12:15pm

I always wondered if that and Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun have something to do with each other. Imagine a meeting of the two along with the meeting between Hendrix and Miles.

Happy holidays, Duke!
Doca - Love the idea of a meeting of Brötzmann and Jimi over Machine Gun. Though maybe that meeting happens in proxy with Sonny Sharrock in Last Exit?
  12:20pm
Dean:

BB does feature the Alessi Bros., the most guilty of my pleasures (except when listening to UMHDT, when no pleasures are guilty). But BB also featured Peppy Castro who formed Wiggy Bits when BB split up. WB is another worthy download.

You're right, @Jeff J. How come I never thought about it in that way?

added to the queue, Dean. thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Jeff Golick:

@UM: I was at a bar on Sat. night, and the dj spun one of the funkier cuts undergirding the Hinky Dinky Time intro. I was fully primed to hear the rest -- "ev'ry doggone thing!" -- but alas was not to be.

We watched the old Bill Murray movie Scrooged the other night. Miles was in a brief scene as a street musician. My son and I both exclaimed "Holy shit. Is that Miles?"
Avatar 12:34pm

Haha I didn't know he was there, @Dean, but he really did a cameo on that movie

Doca - Hadn't made the Last Exit/Hendrix connection myself until you mentioned the Machine Gun correlation!

Miles in "Scrooged" - so this show is holiday appropriate!

A couple years ago I found a used copy of this Stockhausen LP at the same store where yesterday I purchased Barnaby Bye. For two bucks yesterday I picked up John Hiatt's Bring the Family. I had no idea this was the record that lead to Little Village.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Jeff Golick:

That store sounds aces, Dean.
  12:57pm

It is. It's Chris Strachwitz's Down Home Records, El Cerrito, CA. The home of Arhoolie.

Hi Jeff and hi Jeff.

@Dean
I haven't been to Down Home in 20 years. WFMU's Rex Doane used to work for Chris Strachwitz. OK, I'm out of gossip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Hi. More gossip, please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Uncle Michael:

So much booty being kicked today, Jeffs. I will continue listening in my automobile and be back at the comments in a bit.
  1:06pm
Dean:

@Doug, I'd bet some of the records you saw there 20 years ago are still there. Or at least the dust that had collected on them.

Once I bought a Bruce Ackley CD (he the A in ROVA) there. The salesperson turned to a female colleague and said, "Look, he's buying your husband's record." Then he told me that Jon Raskin (the R) was in the store, too. No sign of O or V, though.

There used to be the most amazing Salvadoran take-out burrito joint in El Cerrito. Only went there once, but it was memorable. My East Bay-living sister says its closed now.
  1:11pm
Dean:

Almost directly across the street is a Korean burrito joint, Best Burritos. For the sake of truth in advertising, it should be called Mighty Good Burritos. The owner is a chef trained in Korea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Jeff Golick:

That's a nutty story, Dean. Nutty & lovely.

By coincidence, I think Nutty & Lovely™ is my hair coloring tonic.

I always assumed the guys in ROVA stuck together. You know, like The Beatles in that documentary, Hard Day's Night.

Cities in Montana?
  1:24pm
Dean:

Getting some mileage out of my Down Home visit last night. I decided against purchasing an Arild Anderson mid-2000s ECM disk. The pianist was a Greek guy, but as you pointed out, the sound was predictable. OTOH, there are plenty of ECM releases from the past couple decades that hold their own.

Does this album has anything to do with Dostoevsky's book?
Avatar 1:45pm

Doc - yes, but also referencing Ralph Ellison and the Underground Man section in Invisible Man

This Wollesen et al. disk brings to mind much earlier stuff, namely the Clemencic Consort's several disks of Carmina Burana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3coQUDanATk I gather Rasa Rasa is Lithuanian, where CB comes from further south and west. But the party vibe is there.
