Do yourself a favor, James, and skip the Cracker Barrel. Despite the homespun PR, it is basically poured-from-a-can food. We finally stopped at one on our many traverses of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and it was revolting.

A year or two ago my wife and I stopped at an antique store just off I-55. We found an adorable iron-legged footstool, that looked antique, but when I turned it over, I found "Made in China" on the bottom. Opportunity for ironic comment about how we now have our history imported form Chica.

One time, when I was a teen-ager, my Mom, my sister and I were driving back to St. Louis from the North East US, and we stopped at a diner somewhere in either Ohio or Pennsylvania. Most of the ceiling of the diner had model airplanes hanging from it. I have driven that highway through Ohio and Pennsylvania many times since, but have never found the place again. Re your 10:11 anmt, DS, maybe you could clear something up for me. On WFMU's schedule tables, much of the time on the Give The Drummer stream is listed simply as such. I've listened a LITTLE during those times, but have yet to figure out what that programming is. Is it the equivalent of automated radio, i.e. no personality? Is it reruns?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
Haven't announced the new host's name yet. I will in two weeks.
Avatar 🥁 10:25am βrian:

Is there a back story for the agitated gif? Is it fabricated? Pretty amusing, in any case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Robert
When a live show isn't airing on Give the Drummer Radio (like right now), the stream plays a continuous flow of music that I have selected for it. It is semi-automated in that it picks tracks at random from a pool of selections I have uploaded to it and it selects them within parameters that I have determined. So it is a machine operating with a human soul. If you will.
  10:28am Robert:

Brian, I suspect the work of the Surveillance Camera Players or their ilk. The 1st supposedly rebounding object clearly goes over the head of the guy by a lot.

  10:34am Robert:

Thanks, DS. I thought it would be funny (both in the ha-ha and strange senses) for WFMU to be using a format from commercial stations of the 1970 & eliminating the DJs! But then, that's what the Rock & Soul Ichi-ban is, isn't it? Funny how things go on the one hand from "How do we provide opp'ty for all these people to expose their art to the world?" when they had only radio, to "How do we fill all this time?" when you have streams. A problem to be desired!
Avatar 10:39am Jesse K:

Avatar 🥁 10:41am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

24 Days and Hour, as trombonist Craig Harris usta say.
  10:42am Robert:

The technology of those automated stations in the 1970s & '80s was subject to glitches. There was a cueing track on taped programs that caused the next tape to play, and sometimes a spurious blip would cause that to be tripped prematurely. Sometimes it would take hours for such a station's only staffer on call to get there & fix things; otherwise it was just a guy showing up weekly to change tapes.
Avatar 10:43am Jesse K:

Hello Doug and fabulously lucky listeners.
Could we have the shot from camera 4 please, darling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Robert
Originally, WFMU station manager Ken Freedman suggested I do the stream modeled on Rock & Soul Ichiban. When I learned that I could broadcast my show live on the stream, I jumped at the offer. I am constantly uploading tracks for the stream to play in its semi-automated mode, but that pales in comparison to doing live radio.

Pittsburgh's raining blues across the land...and yonder too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Robert
Long before we moved to Pittsburgh, we used to read a book to our daughter called "Uncle Andy's" written by Andy Warhol's (I think) nephew. In it he chronicled all the tunnels the family would drive through from Pittsburgh to New York to visit Uncle Andy.

I also ate at several Beef O'Brady's.

Remember the Barrel of Monkeys game? Cracker Barrel could sell a Barrel of Crackers game, with little plastic representations of their standard clientele to lift up by hooked arms one on t' other...

@Mr C
That makes me want to play The Outcasts "I'm in Pittsburgh and It's Raining"

For my money you still can't beat TGI McScratchy's Goodtime Foodrinkery. Where every day is New year's Eve!
Avatar 11:41am Carmichael:

@Doug: isn't that a show with Danny DeVito?
  11:41am Robert:

But the nephew missed Blue Mountain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

The hill just outside the Blue Mountain tunnel actually looks blue, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I hate to cut and paste and run, but in 15 minutes...

@Carmichael: I could have had the road-food chain daily double down there in Naples w/ my Waffle House excursion. Sounds like I was better off with the diner on the main drag—packed, that mid-March weekend, with snowbirds and local seniors. And six hungover 40-somethings.

Here now, the late, great Wendy Rene at 17.

Rest sweetly, Ms Rene (Mary Frierson).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Almost unbearable listening to this now. Wendy Rene died on Tuesday at 67.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Wonderful show today, Sir Douglas. Thank you.

See you all in the next room!
