Hey, Jesse! I'll just check in briefly since I think my comments are coming across even stranger than usual tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Doug Schulkind:

@davex
The stranger the better! (According to Albert Camus.)
Avatar 7:07pm

hey doca and Doug and Dave!
No need to worry, all strange is probably fine

Hi Jesse!

Okay, then I'll just keep at it. No choice.

Anyone read this Perfecting Sound Forever book by Greg Milner? Your show's gonna provide me with the soundtrack to pages 29 to as far as I get
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ragas to riches.
Avatar 7:13pm

welcome Holly!
@dave, I would argue that, like everyone, you have a superficial choice but your decisions are likely governed by forces beyond your control.
Avatar 7:14pm
doca:

That pic reminds me of the album cover to The Sea and the Bells, by Rachel's
Avatar 7:15pm
Holly in NC:

@doca - That's lovely album that I haven't listened to in several years, thank you for reminding me!
Avatar 7:19pm
doca:

De nada, @Holly! I think it's always worth to remember Rachel's, specially on cold or rainy days.
Avatar 7:20pm
Jesse K:

oh wow, you're right! I forgot about that record actually. I took it of the charles river tonight in the rain
Avatar 7:21pm
doca:

Charles River is in Providence?
Avatar 7:22pm
Jesse K:

oh right, it's the main river in Boston. I've been walking over it every day to get to work so I'm taking photos of just the water
Avatar 7:23pm
doca:

Nice. Is it always the same spot and time? You could do something like that Paul Auster's Auggie Wren thing in Smoke
Avatar 7:29pm
Jesse K:

no, I move around. I try to take a bunch of shots as I walk across and pick the one I like the best. It isn't science exactly
Avatar 7:30pm
Jesse K:

I haven't seen Smoke yet
Avatar 7:31pm
doca:

It's a cool movie despite a lot of flaws. I think the same applies to most of Paul Auster's literature.
The shots are beautiful anyway.
Avatar 7:34pm
Jesse K:

cool, I'll put it on the list. I guess I should take a break from scifi for a balanced life
Avatar 7:36pm
doca:

I should engage more seriously with sci-fi. What you're reading now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Doug Schulkind:

@doca
I'm a big Paul Auster fan. (I like little Paul Auster, too.)
Avatar 7:39pm
Jesse K:

well to be honest it's all cinematic scifi that I'm engaged with. I'm reading mostly historical hard science, though I don't make enough time to read so I'm listening to Origin of Species on audiobook
Avatar 7:41pm
doca:

@Doug: Paul Auster wrote two of my favorite novels (The NY Trilogy and In The Country of the Last Things), one novel I love (Moon Palace) and a lot of interesting things, but his latest works all seem kinda formulaic to me.
Obviously I'm into artist's early stuff...
Avatar 7:41pm
northguineahills:

Loving it so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Doug Schulkind:

@doca
Love all those books! The first thing I read of his was The Invention of Solitude, and then I was hooked.
Avatar 7:43pm
doca:

@Jesse K: I should read Darwin sometime. I've read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy this year, it got me addicted.
Avatar 7:43pm
Jesse K:

@NGH, just when it took a turn for the new age
Avatar 7:44pm
Jesse K:

@doca, I felt like it's something that I was thinking about a lot but the source is somewhat different than people often quote.
Avatar 7:48pm
doca:

@Jesse K: Yeah, I know that his view of evolution isn't the battlecamp that people later converted it nor it's as linear as it usually is presented. Makes one realize why the work was really that disturbing in its own era (and even now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
davex:

Paul Auster has done some fantastic work. He has quite a following here in Europe as well.

The patterns feel like they go with the zithering ... which is giving me chills down my back, btw
Avatar 8:16pm

thanks Holly! I think that's waves from the bridge support or a passing crew. It's sometimes difficult to not get the boaters in the photos
Avatar 8:16pm

Letters from Home is her film that some of Smoke reminded me of. It's just her reading letters from her mother over footage of 1970s New York City. Street scenes with a still camera. Scenes from inside moving subways. Scenes out the window of moving cars. It's great

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

Jesse! I've seen that guy's work before! In the 1990s in Minneapolis at the Walker. There was a huge stack of one of his ocean images and as you walked through the gallery, you could take one. (They were free.) I hung it on my wall for a while.
Avatar 8:25pm
Jesse K:

@Santos, welcome! That's amazing, I've loved his records for some time, would love to see him! I feel like there was a time when I saw Zakir Hussain every year with someone else, he's pretty great for everything he does
Avatar 8:25pm
Jesse K:

@Gary, I've never seen it in person, I almost never take free prints because I then have to figure out what to do with them and I'm a bad caretaker of art tbh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Gary:

I just Googled around and I see that it's a gal, not a guy. Looks like she's done a lot of amazing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Yeah, Zakir's great for jamming with all sorts of folks. Him w/Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer was pretty nifty too.

agreed @probablyjohn, but it's always in service of a form. Actually, the psychrock is like psyche that's always in service of a beat so maybe I should reconsider

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
probablyjohn:

I mean, really it's a whole thing that includes music and I agree it doesn't make any sense and none of this probably has much to do with the label name anyway.

I just always thought the architecture and interiors were pretty trippy so when I heard you say that I thought I'd say so. They are like classic baroque spaces that are starting to twist and melt out of symmetry, coming to life a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
coelacanth:

Doug That sounds good. my masala was microwave food (atop my own spiced rice)...it was just okay.
Your dish reminds me that a turkish restaurant in my town makes a delicious red lentil soup, and "soup weather" is here!

Holly in NC:

@coelacanth-
I have a recipe for "Turkish Wedding Soup" dating from back in the day when such recipes were not shall we say, usually authentic in any way shape or form - nonetheless it's 1 of my top 5 soups ever - base = red lentils, love = the shit ton of garlic, butter & mint involved as garnish. Ohhhhh so good.
