JakeGould:

FWIW, William… Sorry I mentioned that a-hat. Get this. Go out to get a chicken gyro sandwich. Late at might I know but I realized I skipped dinner. Anyway, I just say to the guy “How you doing?” He says, “I’m doing fine. You?” I respond, “Doing fine. Not so cold out here.” Then he just goes, “I want them to end these protests already!” I’m stunned not at his sentiment but I am in BAY RIDGE, BROOKLYN! There is 100% no way those protests affect anyone here. And I say, “What do you care? We have no protests here.” Then the guy says, “Yes! But they blocked the FDR Drive!” So I am supposed to be upset the FDR drive was blocked? Screw these casual racists… Newsstands, street food cards, bars… Where do these geniuses exist? Why? Who cares…

And when I say, “Who cares…” I mean, let them march. What’s the big deal? A few days out of the year people peaceful march because—I don’t know—someone was MURDERDED and that is what upsets you? That upsets you in a part of NYC that is 100% nowhere near a protest zone? Jesus get a life.

I'm surprised really that it has not been a lot worse. Regardless of the circumstances of the Ferguson case (and I cannot speak for the jury, but from what I've read eyewitness testimony tends to support the public's version of events, not Wilson's), this is the latest in a long line of court decisions that essentially say to Black Americans, "your public officials can shoot you dead and get away with it EVERY TIME." The unrest is well-warranted. I just don't want to see anyone but other cops get hurt, certainly not my friends and loved ones. I'll also add that it takes something like this to get people into the streets en masse, and it shouldn't. We must all look away from our tablets and phones and realize that the very rich are screwing us way more than EVER BEFORE, and the police are their complicit army.

The still is from Raoul Ruiz' Three Crowns For a Sailor. The dolls are never "explained," but they all have glowing eyes like that. Maria, in the story, is an ethereal bordello girl whose room is decorated with the dolls, and a child's coffin.

Sure, it's creepy. But it takes on a whole new light when watching w/o sound, but with the music that's currently playing. Smoke a joint.

Going to Williamsburg in the 1980s was always a bit scary. Now... It's another planet.
Avatar 1:45am
Wm.:

I had one roommate. It was cooler in a way, just b/c it didn't have the global reputation, people were not flocking there quite yet. Polish bar fights in the street, burning couches at 2 a.m., and cheap, hard drugs have been replaced by bike lanes and more parking for tourists. When TV shows are set there, it's kind of over...though I will say there are many great places to eat in the area these days, as there were then. Always been a great neighborhood for food. But those bearded dudes with Oreo cookies in their ears are new, can't look at 'em.

Best old flick I've never seen before, this week: WALKING TALL 1973 with Joe Don Baker (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070895/) - he doesn't smoke his pipe in this one, but shows his usual stubbornness, its a kinda conservative YOUWONTBRINGME DOWN kinda film, and he gets down with the bad guys, even if it costs him A LOT. Nice physical brutality in this one! Highly recommended. Score didnt do much, though.
