A piercing, slicing, crushing odyssey through raw emotions, harsh noise, grinding blasts, hardcore punk, and unsettling thoughts. It's like if DS9 was more like Event Horizon, but as a radio show.

Black Flag!

Robert:

Do Crass & Black Flag count as "contemporary hardcore"? Not saying there's anything bad about it, but the program in this time slot (including its predecessor) struck me from the beginning as punk-stalgia. Did things not move on?

JakeGould:

“Did things not move on?” Yes, you!

This show is just what I needed right now... Thanks, Bosh!
@Robert: check out the archived playlist for this show and the former "Distort Jersey City" and you will find a lot of great new hardcore bands. You just have to hunt around to find the bands sometimes.

JakeGould:

FWIW, anyone who tells me music has “moved on” or somehow has “evolved” can go ram it. ENJOY THE MUSIC!
  8:23pm
JakeGould:

Or should I say, any snoot who says things should “move on” or “evolve” should ram it.
  8:24pm
Robert:

Yes, I did hear some of that, Todd. It's just that the pitch here is trying to straddle an unstraddleable fence.
  8:28pm
Robert:

I think when they made that music, they'd've giggled at the idea of its being used again on a program 30 yrs. later that was pitched to people who were in the stage they were then. Nothing wrong with the music for someone my age (60), and of course there are themes that are timeless, just that I find it funny being in this setting.
  8:32pm
Robert:

It's especially funny because back then a lot was made of differentiation from whatever wave had come along just a few yrs. earlier. Actually that was less so in the music itself than in its followers; the music frequently paid tribute to their forebears, so I guess there's that.
  8:35pm
JakeGould:

Robert, the reason why there was such differentiation back then was just the overbearing nature of any genre at the time. One radio station playing the same thing all the time tends to polarize. WFMU is stone soup.

@Robert: I'm 58 and have played in hardcore/punk bands for over 30 years. I've giggled when my 80's band has played recent reunion shows and an 18 year old kid in a Mob 47 jumps up on stage and knows all the lyrics to our songs. Mostly I'm laughing at the memories of how 'discerning' underground music fans back then would tell us that hardcore was shit and would soon be forgotten. The revival/renewal of interest in HC over the last 10-15 years amazes me and the resurgence of not-just-punk-by-the-numbers bands who use a pretty deep knowledge of older hardcore to create new twists is welcome in my world.
