I am enjoying a Labor Day weekend of doing jack-diddly-shit. August was a very busy, weekend-less month. Glad for an island of calm. Hope all USians on the board are enjoying their Mondays off, too, and those outside the States are slacking off in solidarity.
So, guys, let me start asking you. I have a friend who just went to NY to stay a year while on a Fullbright scholarship. I have the plan to visit him. Is it better in late February during the WFMU marathon or in May to catch up the Record Fair? (I'll have classes from March to July, so that's why I'm considering going in the winter)
Hey DOCA! Glad it's feeling holiday-ish there. As for NYC, you want to come when the weather is better if you can swing it and the Record Fair is a nice bonus.
@Jeff G: Yes, I'm of dubious opinion regarding her appearance in Portlandia. The same for Portlandia in general (sorry)
@Jeff J: Keep the rumors going, one day they'll take it!
@Jeffs I made this comment the other day so apologies for repeating. I find the production/mixing on the Burritos first album could have been better all round.
I've probably mentioned that my first P-Funk show was a day or two after Eddie Hazel died and Michael Hampton played a very long and very wonderful Maggot Brain in Eddie's honor.
That production never bothered us -- maybe just so happy to hear Gram Parsons singing and not, say, Roger McGuinn whose vocals on Sweetheart missed the mark for us.
It was. The show itself was amazing. It was 4 and a half hours of non-stop music...though everyone but the drummer got at least one break. It was a New Years Eve concert in a big place with tables and chairs and champagne and finger food. There was a dance floor and things like portrait setups so people could get photographed with their dates. It was like prom...for 40 year-old black people. I don't think there were a dozen white folks there. I wore my vintage sharkskin suit an my wife looked pretty good too. Danced, danced, danced and sweat right through that suit. it was the best time.
Hey give Roger a break. Not a great voice or song writer but that jangly twelve string. There would be an ocean liner full of bands unheard without that.
It was an unplanned addition to the encores. Possibly EC-attributable. Some friends of mine once went to see TW in Boston and Elvis was seen in the lobby, there in attendance.
It's interesting to listen to FMU and now with the comments to appreciate how much British music other than hitsville (sorry Berry, I mean top 10) has been enjoyed.
@Brian: we're trying to put together some kind of British folk > jazz show. Sort of a Joe Boyd-to-Keith-Tippett kind of thing. (Don't hold your breath, tho.)
Hard to get into the mood of this song, as at present, in my apt, two teens are mainlining John Oliver show rereuns in one room, while in another, my daughter and wife are Simpsons marathoning. I'm in between.
I perma-borrowed that book from my mother in ~89 when she got it from a book club. Once I began listening to FMU a few years later, I was able to ID with more and more of it.
