But this is my first time going "by myself". I'm going with Dave Bombay, the host of Knuckle Sandwich on WFMU! WE'RE GONNA CONQUER JAPAN.

	4:15pm P-90: @Keili; Are you planning an excursion to Kyoto? (I'm sure you know that) the Shinkansen Bullet Train takes just a couple of hours from Tokyo. There are websites where you can book the train and a night in an economical hotel at big discounts. I really recommend visiting a couple of the Zen temples there (can't miss the uber-famous Ryoan-ji garden) and you get a chance to hear the Kansai accent and dialect. There's also a Kansai underground club scene there (though the police are known to sometimes enforce the stupid Japanese "no dancing after 1:30" laws.)
	4:16pm northguineahills: @P-90. I did that as a wee lad. Actually the shinkasen tracks were less then a km from my house.
	4:17pm Keili: @p-90 - I visited Kyoto last time I was in Japan and while the views and culture were incredible, one day's visit was definitely enough. I'm unfortunately traveling to Japan on an extremely extremely low budget, making it look impossible to visit Kyoto. But now after reading what you wrote I really wanna see if I can make it there!

	4:32pm Gaylord Fields: My biggest surprise is that Tokyo was a lot more affordable than I thought it would be, especially compared to a city like London.

	4:36pm Keili: @jim - THANK YOU! It's been bothering me all week, because I vividly remember loving it as a kid and sitting in the car listening to it and imagining Aqua as like a female muppet accompanied by a shaggy male muppet.

	4:36pm Keili: @gaylord - yes! I keep trying to disprove the common idea that tokyo is like OMG SO EXPENSIVE. The cost of living is significantly less than people seem to believe.

	4:38pm Gaylord Fields: Also, I visited three shrines and four washlets. And observesd many, many young people at Harajuku, as it was the summer holiday. Saw some ganguro, but not as many as I had anticipated. And I ordered a bottle of Mandom, I need to warn all the ladies.

But yes, Tokyo is not expensive at all unless you seek to pay more for things: You can get very basic yet pretty comfortable single room in Shibuya for around ¥700 ($70) a night. You certainly can't get that in New York or most other major world cities.
	4:54pm Guido from Cologne: Well, with some luck you can befriend with an Yokohama based composer of horror movie soundtracks. Dunno if he's in the hottest current Yokohama underground culture as well. But guess he's capable to guide directions.
	4:56pm Bob in DC and/or Virginia: Both times I was in Tokyo, I was surprised at how much cheaper the accommodations were compared with what I'd paid in New York. They were both basic but very nice -- one was a ryokan with a lot of expats staying there, and the other was a place called "Elegant Inn Yasuda," which basically seemed to be various rooms in Mr. Yasuda's house.

	4:15pm P-90: @Keili; Are you planning an excursion to Kyoto? (I'm sure you know that) the Shinkansen Bullet Train takes just a couple of hours from Tokyo. There are websites where you can book the train and a night in an economical hotel at big discounts. I really recommend visiting a couple of the Zen temples there (can't miss the uber-famous Ryoan-ji garden) and you get a chance to hear the Kansai accent and dialect. There's also a Kansai underground club scene there (though the police are known to sometimes enforce the stupid Japanese "no dancing after 1:30" laws.)
	4:16pm northguineahills: @P-90. I did that as a wee lad. Actually the shinkasen tracks were less then a km from my house.
	4:17pm Keili: @p-90 - I visited Kyoto last time I was in Japan and while the views and culture were incredible, one day's visit was definitely enough. I'm unfortunately traveling to Japan on an extremely extremely low budget, making it look impossible to visit Kyoto. But now after reading what you wrote I really wanna see if I can make it there!

But yes, Tokyo is not expensive at all unless you seek to pay more for things: You can get very basic yet pretty comfortable single room in Shibuya for around ¥700 ($70) a night. You certainly can't get that in New York or most other major world cities.
	4:54pm Guido from Cologne: Well, with some luck you can befriend with an Yokohama based composer of horror movie soundtracks. Dunno if he's in the hottest current Yokohama underground culture as well. But guess he's capable to guide directions.
	4:56pm Bob in DC and/or Virginia: Both times I was in Tokyo, I was surprised at how much cheaper the accommodations were compared with what I'd paid in New York. They were both basic but very nice -- one was a ryokan with a lot of expats staying there, and the other was a place called "Elegant Inn Yasuda," which basically seemed to be various rooms in Mr. Yasuda's house.
