Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Gary:

I want your job, Holly! That sounds like an awesome way to spend a day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Parq:

Hi, gang. Y'know, I try to take solace in being flippant too, but every now and then, I have to stop and acknowledge how horrified I am at what we've become in this century. And, of course, the more horrific an incident is, the surer it is that it will only strengthen the gun crowd's hold on the rest of us.
Avatar 9:07am Holly in NC:

@Gary - I wish you could take over for me, truly. SO not my forte.
Avatar 9:07am glenn:

i have that george barnes rekkid, by the way.
Avatar 9:07am ndbob:

Avatar 9:11am glenn:

i think that hunters and farmers have a reasonable excuse to own a rifle. i don't think anybody has any possible reason to own an uzi, or an ak47, or even a handgun, for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
I'm not sure how Parq is using the phrase "gun crowd," but I'm guessing he's not referring to every single individual who happens to own a gun. Just the community of people who assign to their guns the sorts of rights intended for actual humans.
Avatar 9:13am ndbob:

@Glenn totally agree re uzi's and ak47s - not so sure about handguns - no one needs an automatic weapon and to train a 9 year old to use one is crazy -which doesn't mean that some firearms training isn't appropriate for 9 year olds
  9:15am Mr C:

Good morning blues...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Easy for you to say, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Who doesn't have the blues at 6:16 in the morning?
Avatar 9:17am Erella:

No child of 9 needs to know how to use a firearm. And No one needs to use an automatic weapon.
They need to learn about how to cut their vegetables.
Avatar 9:18am glenn:

i'm not completely anti gun, by any means. i grew up on a farm, where they are a necessary thing. and there's no doubt, target shooting is a ton of fun. i just honestly think the only use for a handgun is to kill another person, and i frown on that.
Avatar 9:20am Erella:

I am completely anti gun for children

Avatar 9:30am ndbob:

@Glenn when I lived in Jamestown almost everyone owned a gun and there was very little violent crime - sad to see that holier-than-Americans attitude you have
Avatar 9:32am Holly in NC:

@Mr C -So glad for you that you got to see Magic Sam, so sad for me that I didn't :-)

Re guns in US - My ex-husband, an avid, avid, hunter FOR FOOD ONLY (where do you think I get my venison?) and an even more avid target shooting afficionado/expert - was, in his youth, jointly trained by his hunter/trapper father & NRA instructors. He himself now is a licensed/certified NRA instructor. Who turned in his NRA membership quite a few years ago. NRA is NOT what it used to be.
Avatar 9:34am ndbob:

@Holly agree there for sure - I wonder how the NRA was taken over by a bunch of extremists - I remember even Bush Sr. turning in his NRA membership

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary

Avatar 🥁 9:40am duke:

A large amount of the NRA activities is acting as a lobby group for gun manufacturers. When you are in the gun business anything restricting gun sales is bad for business.
Avatar 9:41am glenn:

but who knows? it takes an extremist to understand another one. reasonable people have difficult wrapping their minds around that kind of whackadoodle behaviour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

I think the biggest victims of the NRA phony 2nd Amendment absolutism are the people who've spent such huge amounts on guns and ammo thinking they are protecting their "rights." I think Duke is right. It's all marketing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am listener james from westwood:

The Repub-driven law-and-order crusade (code words for anti-black fearmongering) in the mid/late 60s was, IIRC from something I've read, one of the forces that morphed the NRA from a hunting and sporting org to an absolutist gun-rights activist group.
Avatar 9:43am glenn:

well, sure. same goes for the tobacco business or the alcohol business. what if the second amendment said that people have the right to propel sugar beets at each other? i'm pretty sure the beet growers would be doing their best to stop anybody limiting their activities.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:43am listener james from westwood:

This only accelerated under Reagan, despite his almost being murdered w a handgun.
Avatar 9:44am ausmanx:

here i am in london! good afternoon, mr s (unusual time for me)... i'm happy to be comprehensively anti-gun. they're gonna start shooting badgers here again soon. that's just not fair. i say train the badgers to shoot back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Gary:

When I was a kid or maybe very early teen a friend took me out shooting with his BB gun. I aimed at a bird on a telephone wire above and, first time, shot it. It fell to the ground. It continued to move, slightly, in ways that suggested extreme trauma. It eventually stopped moving. I burst into tears. It was my only experience with guns.

I still eat birds, though.
Avatar 9:44am ndbob:

@the 2nd Amendment is what the Supreme Court says it is - there is an individual right to bear arms - but that it no way, as the court made clear, an absolute right

Hey hey, Alex in Illinois! May I assume that the Cubby Bear is on the NORTH side of Chicago?

@Dean
The club has been trying to find you in order to impose its two-drink minimum.
  11:26am Dean:

They can tally up the bottles in the recycle bin and do the math.

In fact, the place is all ages, which is very cool. After a night of a particularly long and loud performance by a Dead-inspired jam band, the club apologized to the neighborhood by presenting free passes to everybody on the block.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

My favorite Thomas Mapfumo story is about the time the Rhodesian government arrested him because of his seditious music, which was being played despite bans against it. In order to try to discredit Mapfumo as a collaborator, the regime flew helicopters low over the bush where rebels were hiding. Hanging from the helicopters were loudspeakers pumping out Mapfumo's music at high volume. The authorities figured that the rebels would assume that Mapfumo had gone over to the other side if the government was playing it. Needless to say, the scheme backfired.

Ultimately and sadly, the whole revolution backfired with the installation of the monster Robert Mugabe.

Fuck!
