I saw an original member or two perform recently as Faust. It was... well... not exactly, uh... I guess it was cool to have seen it.

Ike:

A double-u seems like fair-enough artistic license. You only want to go to the extreme of "sic" usage if it's something as language-rapey as apostrophe molestation, as with the La's (sic) or Los Dug-Dug's (sic).
  3:49pm
rw:

What does sic stand for? Or is it a word unto itself? I saw it in the newspaper today. Seemingly used as SW just mentioned, a way to belittle the person being quoted.
Avatar 3:50pm
Bayta:

Latin adverb sic ("thus"; in full: sic erat scriptum, "thus was it written") - from wiki
Avatar 3:51pm
northguineahills:

Eric Lyon, new to me. I like where it's going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Sem Chumbo:

"Sic" is Latin and means "as written in the original." Usually, "sic" follows a misspelling published by someone else, so that they don't get blamed for it.
Avatar 3:51pm
Cecile:

I think "sic" how I understand it just means "verbatim in a weird way"

When I used "sic" that's what I thought of it. I never thought less of the speaker. I just wanted to maintain the quirkiness of the language without correcting it.
Avatar 3:53pm
northguineahills:

Usually used for words that were originally innocently or purposely spelled incorrectly.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Ike:

Yeah, IMHO, "sic" is not so much, "That person is shit at grammar!" as, "This isn't my fault! Don't blame me! This here is just the facts, ma'am."
Avatar 3:54pm
northguineahills:

(grammar too)
  3:57pm
rw:

The article in the newspaper today was quoting an email which used the word "loose" instead of (the correct) "lose". It could have been non-judgmental, but I felt they could have picked a different, correctly spelled quote.
  3:58pm
rw:

to make the person being quoted seem less dim.
Avatar 3:59pm
Cecile:

rw, I think a better route if you are not doing journalistic writing is to have a policy that says that letters will be edited for spelling and grammar. Most magazines and newspapers do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
fred:

I think "sic" can also be a way to tell the editor that the spelling was intentional, and should be left alone. If one corrects, then comes the choice of putting the correction in square brackets or not, but if you do it's unclear what was rewritten
  4:01pm
rw:

And speaking of dim... Scott, the show today (as always) is anything but. I'd say bright even. Shimmering!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
fred:

Will this be an all-Eric set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
DCE:

maybe some Erik(s) as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

Cecile:

this is interesting. Like a cross between Freez and Shriekback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Parq:

Hi all, In my shop, "sic" is used, if at all, just as Scott said -- as a means to convey "Spelling or grammar error by original speaker, who's clearly a jerk." We use it if we're looking to be snide.
