I come here all the time. For the strudel.

hey, Kurt.
@adrian: continuing the conversation from Bryce's show, I must say: wow

Hello Kurt. As always, I trust your show to take the bite out of being home instead of at a show

Wow, so the strudel is good here? I'll have to order that.

Yes, common. Dimone sang this while schlepping concert tickets.

@carmichael: i can see it now. i think that was the funniest part of that flick. that and the bagel sticking out of sean penn's shorts.
Avatar 3:06pm
adrian in mpls:

@doca -- yeah, i was really lucky. they were troopers. especially, since we lived out in the country - so trekking a couple hours into the city for a show was a big deal. they're old hippies, so they were game for live music/new experiences/etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
Ike:

Well, I'm def. not ordering THAT bagel.

@Kurt: You bought this in Lisbon? I'm always thinking what the Clean Feed store should be like.

Hey @Fred, did I ask if you could stream the Haitian Creole pirate, Radyo Independans, that interferes w/WFMU and see if you could understand any of the ads & tweet details to @BkPirateWatch? I forgot to say that they only broadcast (and stream) in the evenings and late nights here. So they're probably only streaming when you're asleep, presumably to avoid the FCC's main operating hours here. Sometimes they're on all day on Sat. & Sun. though.

Hey guys, do you know Natália de Andrade, the Portuguese lyrical singer? (sorry, I'm Brazilian and I can't help but making fun sometimes of portuguese people)

Did I say something? no, okay, I am now.

This Natércia track has some resemblance with Jewish music. It would be nice to track down the Sefardite influence on Portuguese musical genres.

hey everybody! glad to be back!

doca, yes, a few lisboa finds. sadly clean feed's store (trem azul) closed for good the day i got there but i did get there that afternoon.

Avatar 3:34pm

Hahah this is a funny song, @Kurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
fred:

@Ike: If these late nights last long enough, it could be early morning over here, so I could give it a try, provided I can find their stream. Creole is a language in itself though. I sometime listen to a local radio with some creole programming, and I can't say I understand much...
Avatar 3:35pm
Captain Sunday:

Can someone offer a running translation of all these songs?
Avatar 3:37pm
northguineahills:

Arto Lindsay was awesome a few weeks ago, played stuff from the 90s through this album.

This one translates as "Derrida's station," about deconstrucTV
  3:39pm

And now "Gutter wallet."

Avatar 3:42pm

ha, i was right by you, up in the little balcony. super crowded it was, nice to see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

@ngh: If you ever come to Paris and see a show, I think we would have no trouble finding each other. I use the same strategy
Avatar 3:48pm
northguineahills:

Great minds think alike.
Avatar 3:49pm
doca:

@Captain Sunday: That song told how the singer wanted to be a number of things but always became disillusioned by the professions. The one I remember, on the song's title, is that he wanted to be a journalist but then went to grad school and everybody was only criticizing everything and he didn't want to end up being a pain in the ass, so he didn't follow journalism.
Avatar 3:52pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for the translation, doca!

I googled and this Tiago Guilil seems to border on novelty song in a really good way. I'll check more out later.

I have that live at Newport record.
Avatar 4:16pm
Cecile:

I never knew that it was heavily overdubbed.
Avatar 4:19pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i didn't either - i don't think much of anyone did until it was reissued a few years ago when it was remastered.
Avatar 4:23pm
Cecile:

When I had to fill in for the Duke Ellington hour at WCBN back in the day (it happened twice), I'd just play the whole Newport record, and fill it in with earlier pieces.

@Cecile - WCBN is where I got my first dose of freeform - driving around rural SE MI, it would come in and out like a wonderful, weird promise of another world

ahhhh, distant radio. i used to work in connecticut - too far away to get wfmu (and well before i had a show) but i knew exactly which hills would give me a couple minutes of the old morning music programs on wbai.

I used to listen to WLS into the wee hours in the UP. Even though it was top 40, it was better top 40 than what we had.

NorthGH's point raises several questions: What particular quality (if any) about the Czech pop music keeps your loyalty to it (correct me if I am wrong)? How is the live music in that scene (if you are familiar with it to that degree) in the states? Would love to drag the American friends into the right spot. My fam in Europe has a special place for that style... the best sort of schmaltz one can hear... always on the radio, too!
