Miz Liz, we were up on the Highline yesterday early evening. No skeeters, I'm pleased to say, but gnats were a problem. Adrian, listening to that track and picturing your ant made my whole morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am

Most of my mosquito bites came from one or two buggers that were inside my apt. Grr!

The ant has unfortunately left the room now :( that was fun while it lasted.

hi liz. good afternoon from dublin. just want to ask. would it be you every year @ primavera fest. in barcelona? i don't think you did a live coverage of primavera this year (i mean as wfmu crew)? coz i could not manage to go this year and i can't see anything from this year primavera in your archives.. nice day to you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
Liz Berg:

Cleaning the bathtub (bottom is scratched) and the crappy caulk some contractor used in lieu of grout around the rim. No amount of bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide can remedy. Andymorphic, the rat in the basement sounds awful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am

our apartment is falling apart, liz. The window falls in when there is any kind of wind, our shower doesn't work - sometimes - our oven door wont stay shut and our landlord is a dick. ah, apartment life.
Avatar 10:05am
Jeezy:

Liz!!! Call Costa at 917-554-2144.
My landlord reimbursed him for his famous bathtub re-glazings which run from $200-350 or so depending on condition. It's AMAZING. Mine went from utterly disgusting to like new!
Avatar 10:06am
Jeezy:

Major job though... you need to be out of apartment for at least 24 hours. Incredible process!
Avatar 10:07am
andymorphic:

my partners reaction to the rat is worse than the rat itself...grout between tiles but you have caulk the seem between tub and wall.
Avatar 10:07am
rob t:

my bathtub/shower stall is made of fiberglass and the paint is peeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Liz Berg:

Oh noes, common! Our oven doesn't start up sometimes, but I guess at least the windows stay shut! Thanks for the reglazing tip, Jeezy, that might work (tub is enamel)... now convincing our landlord that this is a problem he needs to spend money fixing is another story.

Installing tubs, showers, and such need a flexible seam around the interfacing edge / seam. Weight of people will move it around a tiny bit is why.
Avatar 10:14am
Jeezy:

Liz, tell your landlord a friend who works for health dept. saw tub and said that the black mold may be a health issue.. Infer that legal problems could occur if you get sick! Worked for me... :-)

And it will definitely be work on your tub and you will be DAZZLED. Worth every penny, trust me.

Avatar 10:26am
glenn:

you have to caulk between tub and tile. grout will crack, as sss points out. don't use silicone. mould grows on it like stink. the best caulking is kop-r-lastic, or dymonic. tremco 555 is also good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Liz Berg:

I think they used the wrong type of caulk, Glenn and SSS. The mold won't go away... bleach only turns it grey momentarily. Yuck.
Avatar 10:30am
glenn:

and now that i think about it, mapei makes caulking to match their grouts. so that would be my first choice, if i was doing it straight from taw.

Robert:

The caulk problem should easily be remedied by removal & replacement. Ordinarily you WOULD caulk rather than grout around a rim. What makes you say that area should be grouted? You want some give there & allowance for irregularity; it's not like the uniform & thin space between tiles that you'd grout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Liz Berg:

Rock on, Glenn! Never thought I'd be so excited to learn about different caulks, but it sounds like my gross bathtub woes can be remedied.
  10:35am

But glenn, the GE industrial what Irwin rescued from obscurity convinced me that silicones are the answer!

  10:48am
Robert:

I don't know if you got the joke, glenn. Years ago Irwin Chusid found recordings from an industrial musical done for General Electric. The song about silicones was great. So great, in fact, that the staffers at WFMU a few yrs. ago covered it. According to it, silicones from GE are unquestionably the answer. Of course the question in this case may be, what's crap for bathroom caulk?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Liz Berg:

Fear not fine people, sandwich time will come in due time...
  10:51am
Robert:

BTW, I accidentally discovered a good long-term fix for bathroom fungus: chlorine dioxide. Yrs. ago I worked with the Tell-Veltman patent for making ClO2 solution; the brilliant Pres Veltman was our consultant. You have to make a buffer from bicarb of soda & citric acid, and let it react a couple days with sodium chlorite (not chloride).
Avatar 10:53am
Snortley:

Yes, silicone is the way to go. You have to use the anti-microbial type specifically intended for bathrooms, or the stains will re-occur.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
SSS:

OK OK! Here is the full take on bathroom fixture install (how & why I do it anyway). I DO work in a small amount of grout in the load bearing seams, but not too much, as I caulk over that when the grout is dry. The flexible seam of caulk eventually will leak somewhere along its length, probably many places, just a little, starting mold to growth. Once it is wet under a bathroom appliance, it will not dry out, and there is plenty of mold under there for sure, and only full tear out is sure to stop it. Cement board under all, grout around all seams, caulk flexing seams as well, and most important, remove old caulk every two years or so and re-caulk. Good god, who have I become?!
Avatar 10:53am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

ooh. this.
  10:55am
KP:

I had calf-deep standing water in tub for while. Sandy water here is a remnant of Hurricane Sandy and it clogs the drains as well as adding interest to your diet.
Avatar 10:57am
glenn:

i'm a red seal carpenter. i've been building hoses for 30 years. i've used every caulk there is. i've made every mistake you can think of, and i'm telling you - do not use silicone. it is crap.
  10:57am
Robert:

Anyway, chlorine dioxide (which we were using to sterilize artificial kidney equipment) was also in use in Springfresh shower gel (as an antimicrobial for long lasting deodorant effect on skin), so I mixed some of the Tell-Veltman solution with some of my own bubble bath mixture (US pat. 5,336,446) in my bath, and afterward I noticed that where I'd accidentally splashed suds while bathing, the black fungus on the caulk & grout started to fade over a day or two. Ordinary hypochlorite bleach bleaches the fungus but is not good at killing it, while it seems this stuff is best at killing it while having no immediate bleaching effect.
