part of why i hate it is because, just like you say, it requires a lot of effort if the other person isn't reciprocating....of course, they might not want to talk, sometimes it's hard to tell.....in fact, i'm often so overly polite because actually i don't want to talk. humans are odd.

a bad habit of mine, though, is just as we're "wrapping up", i start talking about new things, all animated-like. my mom does that too--it's annoying and strange. maybe it's fear of letting go.

i do that constantly CM... i have a very hard time wrapping up and exiting conversations once i get wound up. i take a while to warm up in social situations, then at some point when comfortable i can't tone it back down. its an absurd problem. i like your analysis.
