Well, considering the problem from an engineering standpoint, earbuds work by moving a small amount of air in close proximity to the eardrum, in a sealed confined space (the ear canal). To do what you are trying to, you really need something that moves a lot more air. Or a much more sensitive microphone ... and a lot of gain. The S/N ratio will be a problem.
