A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 10:07am

well, they were M/A/R/R/S so i guess they got their reward with the legacy which is "Pump Up The Volume", but that single broke up the band

and of course they did "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" too, which is superb and topical

What makes Colorbox so underrated? I had all their records once-upon-a-time (I too was a 4AD head), but I gave them away!

DeemerDave:

Avatar 10:27am
Ivo:

...they're barely remembered at all. I mean, they were ok, but they never really gelled as a group, and they produced very little material. In fact, they ended up relying on covers much of the time....for underrated 4AD bands I might suggest Dif Juz...just sayin'
Avatar 10:27am
βrian:

M. Burch me plaît.
Avatar 10:31am
ausmanx:

well they're remembered enough that when 4AD released the box retrospective 2 years ago they sold out in five minutes. no one was as technologically adept or across so many genres as they were back then. they didn't "rely" on covers, they chose to reinterpret stuff brilliantly and judiciously, i'd say

Colourbox is a bit before their time and also a bit plagued by the fact that their biggest is Pump Up The Volume
  10:37am
Dave M:

This is a great piece. Pink Floyd sample in there?
Avatar 10:47am
Ivo:

It's a mistake to attribute Pump Up The Volume solely to Colorbox - it was a collaboration involving numerous people, though the exact origin story remains contested.

Not only that, but I at least strongly suspect a number of staffers at WFMU have cx at other stns. that they could introduce aspirants to. In fact I bet they love doing that, the same way many WFMU DJs, librarians, etc. love promoting new musical acts.
