Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from June 13, 2014 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

the office I work in is very cold today. I am considering turning on my space heater. Bryce, it would help if you played something extra-spicy.

I was going to commence dire self-immolations as punishment for lateness, but this treated-acoustic piece is too groovy. Will punch self innaface later.

Really enjoying the DC monsoon season.
Avatar 1:33pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

NO MORE MONSOONS untiil we close the house and we hand over the keys, goddammit! Irrationally afraid the freakin' place will cumble to pieces or leak like a gauze hellhole. SO CLOSE...!

hey gang - random question. does anyone here use contact mics regularly?
  1:45pm
headjeeez:

Latecomers will not be seated until after the first piece
Avatar 1:45pm
steve:

or irregularly?
Avatar 1:47pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Steve: Irregularly. Both the soldered radio-shack piezo transducers as well as the cheapo clip-on variety that Korg makes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
DCE:

once in awhile, steve
Avatar 1:48pm
steve:

now we're talkin. follow up - what preamp do you use? whatever one is built into your mixer, or a legit fancy mic pre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
DCE:

usually run mine into a couple of pedals and then into the mixer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
coelacanth:

i often use "regular" mics with a molded chunk of foam in-between the mic & what i'm contacting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
DCE:

I got two great ones from Crank Sturgeon and then a couple of cheapie homemade ones
Avatar 1:51pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Nothing fancy here, preamp-wise. Phantom power from the mxr if the signal is too light. Often I'm putting it thru so many fx toys, it's coming out cole-slaw no matter what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
coelacanth:

steve, you're playing with tape loops now, aren't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
DCE:

I'm usually shouting into mine and then using the SuperEgo to freeze the shouts FOR ETERNITY
Avatar 1:52pm
Bryce:

barcus-berry stuff's real fun to play with...
Avatar 1:56pm
steve:

i NEED to try the Barcus Berry Planar Wave or a similar high end thing like the Trance Audio Amulet - im like desparate, but i don't know how to get one to try besides to spend $300-400 buying online and then try to return it if i don't think its worth it. i was gonna email BB and Trance Audio and ask if there's any stores in the city selling there wares.
Avatar 1:58pm
Bryce:

the frequency response on a harpy/piano-y bit i tried was a real pleasure. don't own one, though.
Avatar 2:00pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

While we're all workshoppin' here:
For field recording, any of you have opinions re: windscreens, foam vs. fur?
Avatar 2:05pm
steve:

fuck. thing is its shockingly easy to make an awesome full frequency contact mic preamp with 10 bucks of stuff from Radio Shack if you know basic analog circuits (i do). im just so goddam curious if those mysterious high end thingies are all that much better, or if they just have 1-2 transistors and 10 bucks of radio shack stuff inside...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
coelacanth:

i've never used fur/feathers,but am usually satisfied with foam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
George of Troy:

I have a Rycote zeppelin on one of my mics, and it's pretty effective against wind noise, although I still get some handling noise if I'm not careful. I've also had decent results with fur on the integrated mics on handheld recorders. I've never found foam to be very effective myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
common:

I really want to learn about analog circuits...make my own stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
coelacanth:

...really i should say i've ALWAYS been able to get what i want with foam; Just not always on the first try.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
DCE:

what kind of fur do they use? is it vegan-friendly?
Avatar 2:11pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm

'thing is,if there's so much wind/breath/etc. that i need 2 layers of foam,it DOES muffle the sound a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@steve It's like they're worried about an undetectable level of noise /imbalance that sits below the grass on an oscilloscope.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm

there must be a foam that's less dense for extreme circumstances. I've never looked; but i will never buy fur. I'm sure it's not necessary.
