Altidore is only any good if US plays a 4-,4-2, he needs the extra support to produce, he's not a creator. That said, it might work against Portugal, but definitely not Germany (we need the extra midfielder) and probably not against Ghana's speed.

@common - i agree. i worked in the rochester, ny public school system for a little while and it was horrible for the kids. either charter schools run like prisons or the regular public schools which were super underfunded and horrible learning environments.

We had really good public schools in my part of Maryland, so when people say the NJ or PA or NY school systems are really awful, I just have no mental framework for that at all. I keep thinking maybe they're exaggerating, which is probably unfair of me.

we had an awful public school where I grew up, but since we were near a college and all the professors's kids went there, we all overachieved to the point where we could actually be useful to society.

My friend went to a lousy school in Lower Michigan in a suburb but there wasn't that pressure to overshoot the goal. She has done amazingly in life and school, but college was a shock to her at first.

We *did* have way too many standardized tests in Maryland in the late 80s and early 90s though, so when people suggest there are even MORE of them now, that makes my head spin. That might be the biggest problem in education. That impeded us more than anything else, those stupid wastes of fucking teaching time.

Exactly. Teach people how to learn! Some rote has to be involved in education (grammar rules, times tables, memorizing verbs in languages) but you have to show how these rote tools can be used in business, government, medicine and the arts.
