My wife was working as an intern for Congressman Ryan at the time. Quite a shock for her. I was in a combat unit in the Air Force, and was nearly called there to fill body bags. That was quite an era.

Schmeling was an anti-Nazi who helped hide his Jewish manager's family during Kristallnacht. He and Louis became good friends later in life. Schmeling provided the Bomber with financial assistance during some lean times toward the end.
