And a subtly spectacular blast it is! Howdy to yee, Listener James.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Artie:

Yip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Gary:

Hi James! Not so easy to fit a "bro" in there :(
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Artie:

This show shall be an achievement of brodougnagian proportions.
Avatar 6:04pm earrie:

Wow.
Avatar 6:05pm ndbob:

and an hour of North Dakota music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Artie Yip! Art Yippie!

Hi earrie!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm listener james from westwood:

"Listener James from Westbro" makes me sound like a picketer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

That's right, ndbob! Tom is a fine son of Grand Forks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Gary:

Damn, this guy's good
Avatar 6:07pm ndbob:

wow Grafton - I have a friend who is from Grafton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

My radio brother Paul Sherratt, of the wonderful Global Jukebox show, turned me onto Tom B in 2003. (One of many essential artists he shared with me.) Paul learned of Tom from another great, the singer/songwriter Jim White.
Avatar 6:11pm ndbob:

never spent any time in Grand Forks - drove through there once long before I moved to ND
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

At least you didn't swim through, ndbob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

The archive for WFMU's shows back in 2004 are all in the RealAudio format, which doesn't do anybody any good. I converted it to an MP3 so I could hear it again myself. Now, at least, this show will be properly archived for eternal listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Tom will NOT be at Fez tonight, unless you can manage the time travel.
Avatar 6:19pm glenn:

it was nice of doug to take credit for all the snow. i was going to blame irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey, it's on me, glenn. Literally.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm listener james from westwood:

I wish I could travel back there! There's a lot I would need to do in April 2004.
Avatar 6:21pm glenn:

i haven't had time to swap my snow tires out. good thing.
Avatar 6:22pm hyde:

hello all from soggy upstate New York
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Doug Schulkind:

I was SO thrilled to be reminded of the anniversary of this decade-old show. (Credit goes to Rachel Redwood in Wales who helped set up some of Tom's shows in the U.K. on his tour that ended tonight.) I had a really awful "taxes" theme show planned.
Avatar 6:24pm earrie:

Worth noting it reached a balmy high of 22°C (72°F) yesterday, eh, Glenn? Low of -7°C (19°F) slated overnight. Big winds riding the differential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Gary:

Sounds taxing :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Was 22°C here yesterday, too, earrie. Big whoop.

Hi, hyde!
Avatar 6:27pm glenn:

i was wearing shorts yesterday, and a parka today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

This is a dangerous songwriter–free zone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

If I'm not mistaken, the first of Tom's records to be released on a proper label (following a number of self-released efforts) was "Empty Houses Are Lonely" on Fat Cat Records in the U.K. Pleasingly, the folks at Fat Cat learned about Tom after hearing this very show!
Avatar 6:30pm ndbob:

just followed Tom on Twitter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Coming up is the first song of Tom's that made me fall in love with his music...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm listener james from westwood:

This session is a jewel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Jesse Kaminsky is up next on the Drummer Stream with Kaminsky Kamoutsky. Jesse's special guest co-host will be tubist Dan Schleifer. I'm not exactly sure what a tubist is, but I think I'll like it.

The playlist page for Kaminsky Kamoutsky will be here: wfmu.org...

april is the cruelest month
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Doug Schulkind:

May you give april her marching orders, hyde.
Avatar 6:48pm hyde:

Oh, Doug, I almost forgot. Thanks so much for posting that John Jeremiah Sullivan piece to twitter. That was a totally amazing read.
Avatar 6:49pm ndbob:

Sullivan is a great writer in general
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Did you notice that the NY Times shared all six songs by Geeshie and Elvie at the end of the story?! I thought that was a very excellent thing to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Gary:

I still need to read that article -- I started it this morning but got sucked into the work day
Avatar 6:52pm ndbob:

same here - just took a brief look at it so far
Avatar 6:52pm hyde:

yeah, I loved the design of the whole thing. Sullivan is a great writer, but the multimedia format was fantastic--I really liked the snippets inside the piece followed by the share of the full tunes too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Uncle Michael:

I've listened to the six songs several times,

Hello all.
Avatar 6:52pm ndbob:

heya UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Gary:

Evening, Unka!
Avatar 6:53pm hyde:

hiya, unca mikey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

heya Um, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Uncle Michael:

I appreciate the greetings...tiring day.
Avatar 6:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Uncle Michael:

I've been enjoying TB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Gary:

That was so freaking great.
Avatar 6:55pm hyde:

thanx for the rerun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

How odd, you get to hear the closing themes to my Friday AND Tuesday shows, back-to-back!
Avatar 6:55pm earrie:

Great one. Glad to listen (I think/pretty sure) again.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, man, now I'm responding in a Pavlovian fashion and thinking it's Uncle Michael time!
Thanks, Doug, for the non-taxing flashback!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Uncle Michael:

I'M NOT READY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Y'all are just the nicest bunch. Thanks for re-listening with me!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Brian in UK:

Do not mistake the songs I write for the person I am. Timely repeat, Doug. These copy editors get everywhere. (Rachel)
At shows recently with Mary Gauthier & Jason Isbell there was almost the same line from them 'If you are waiting for the happy ones you better go now'.
Sometimes Tom sings at right angles to the microphone, his voice has sufficient strength to do so and to get the right effect.
  12:06pm Paul Sherratt:

It's A Wonderful World ... if you know where to look and listen
  12:42pm Paul Sherratt:

I should have known that having that very large glass of wine was not a good idea before listening this archive. Twice wrecked !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Good thing I'm doing the driving, Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Parq:

"Monica's up next" - oh, if only. Hiya, Doug, this archive made for nice listening while I finished up some work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
My tag-team with Monica on those long-ago Fridays was always a thrill.
