Hey Spartan Dawgs! Welcome to the day before Jersey City's State of Emergency. We're gonna behave like civilized people and use napkins and toilet paper until 12am when all hell breaks loose!

Boo toilet paper!

Really? A guy who built a nice table for me is coming by too drop it off tomorrow. Is it going to get wet?

I saw the trailer for The Punk Singer and didn't wanna go near it!

Chop Scott:

Pseu! You are the sister I always hoped for---and appreciate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
mariano:

Never was a Bikini Kill fan myself. Saw them once, maybe it was an off night for them, but I always liked Babes in Toyland and Seven Year Bitch a lot better.
  9:33pm
JakeGould:

I admire & respect “Bikini Kill,” but it always seems to me that they overshadowed the whole Riot Grrl movement leaving lots of great bands falling through the cracks. Now I get the hate mail.
Avatar 9:35pm
acid casualty:

The only thing I remember bout k Hannah was her hysterical spiel on watt's ballhog record. "You better return my Annie soundtrack!" Super effing yawn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
mariano:

That's it, @Jake. So much more in that scene than gets its due credit these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Pseu Braun:

Hi Everyone, if you pledged at least $75 to my show during the WFMU fundraiser and don't think you can fit into the usual size PTWAH T-shirt, email me here and leave your info -- name, listener number if you have it please: wfmu.org...
  9:38pm
JakeGould:

“Bratmobile.” Nuff said.
  9:39pm
PJ:

Pseu, you are right on about Bikini Kill - they had terrible to mediocre lyrics and music, and were ridiculously full of themselves. I sympathized with the "message" but the messengers were talentless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
listener monica:

nice
  9:44pm
JakeGould:

I don’t think Pseu hates “Bikini Kill” and the music, but more the cult of… Legend? Personality? Surrounding the band. I respect them & like their music. But I would like to hear more about other bands involved in that whole era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Pseu Braun:

Seriously, I'm not knocking the talent as much as the message...as I was in the "scene before" BK, there was already confrontation going on that used new tactics to intimidate guys in the audience and quell any violence with a big WHAT THE HELL? And made the guys worship and appreciate as opposed to just being judged as thugs because you have peckers and stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Chop Scott:

Pseu--Seriously, it now all makes perfect sense that you are the sister I never had.
  9:46pm
JakeGould:

Funny to me that “Babes in Toyland” is glossed over. They were never riot grrrl, but clearly spiritual predecessors.
Avatar 9:48pm
fleep:

The center of a rotary telephone dial, nice, listener monica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Pseu Braun:

as soon as I saw "Slut" on KH's belly that one show I was like, "AGAIN??" I mean there were zero nods to all the women punk artists just a year or two and more behind...SO naive. Babes In Toyland were one of the greats. You wanna see dudes run and girls come up to the stage? HELL yuh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Chop Scott:

Can I just say---Frightwig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
CZECHANO:

I always liked Lunachicks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Pseu Braun:

My sisters! Opened for them a few times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
mariano:

Honestly, Pseu, when you were saying that it kinda lifted a weight, especially with others chiming in -- I felt bad for not wanting to see the movie, I had no idea she's become some sort of icon till I saw it on Netflix. Totally agree about Bratmobile, @Jake. Babes in Toyland were just more fun and anarchic, whatever their genre, though "Handsome and Gretel" is total riot grrrl!
Avatar Pseu's Thing with A Hook Hellraiser 2024 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Murph 37:

Especially loving the show tonight
  9:51pm
JakeGould:

But it also all comes down to the whole Seattle, Washington/Washington, D.C. synergy happening in the early 1990s. “Bikini Kill” was mixed into that whole vortex of zine/indie media hype so it does make sense from that perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Pseu Braun:

Look, a lot of the messages put out there at that time were "I'm a VICTIM LOOK AT ME". It's Women's Studies 101. The women artists of my Gen were all way past that. We wanted in the game and to be respected. Which we were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
listener monica:

FRIGHTWIG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
CZECHANO:

Alice Bag, she was real deal tuff!
  9:55pm
JakeGould:

They way I discovered “Bikini Kill” was via “Teenage Gang Debs.” First real zine I ever bought. And from “See Hear!” That zine introduced me to “Beat Happening,” “Bikini Kill” & “Nation of Ulysses.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Pseu Braun:

already mentioned above by chop scott, monica - they ruled. just lookit kurt C's t-shirt on "unplugged"

Oh yeah, @CHECHANO: the live version of "Gluttony" from "Decline of Western Civ Part 1" has one of my favorite screams of all time.

Partial to old-skool Shonen Knife, myself...Kurt squealed like a japanese schoolgirl over them, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

What the? Thought I just heard Rich Hazelton's car exhaust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
CZECHANO:

I like how people are bringing up Babes in Toyland. I really enjoyed them, they use to strike some terror in me. I too feel as if they were glanced over. L7 always had rad t-shirts, and nothing quite like the slits or Eve Libertine to set my politics right.
  10:01pm
JakeGould:

Nowadays I like “La Luz” and “Tacocat.” Funny how there is a big surf guitar revival in the indie world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
CZECHANO:

or left i should say
  10:03pm
Lonely Planet Boy:

Shonen Knife is one of my faves.
  10:07pm
JakeGould:

The thing about saying bands were “Nothing like ‘The Slits’” is most people would not have known about “The Slits” if it weren’t for the new kids mentioning them. I mean if it weren’t for “Quiet Riot” I would have had no idea who “Slade” was. That’s just art. Always B discovering.

Criminy, who cares about riot grills, I missed great pre-horrible Supertramp. Where are my goddam prioritrees ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
CZECHANO:

Jake- i meant to use a semicolon and not a comma. wasn't comparing L7 to the slits or Eve Libertine, but it does read that way (;
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
mariano:

Then there's all the bands that weren't all female, but had prominent female members, like Crass, Mekons, Chumbawamba, Broadcast, Eurythmics, X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
CZECHANO:

Chumbawambas new folk stuff is rather awesome my baby boy loves it
  10:19pm
JakeGould:

Now that you mention it, I have 1,000,000% no clue who the Mekons appeal to. So there you go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

mekons is like England's X
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
mariano:

@Jake: well, I'm one... though I do find some of it unlistenable.
  10:23pm
JakeGould:

I find all of it unlistenable. Also, “The Replacements.” I just don’t get it. I also hate “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” but like the first 4 Sabbath albums which puts me at odds with some of my Sabbath loving friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I enjoyed Sleater-Kinney.
  10:24pm

I also don’t get “X.” Screw me.

@Jake Gould -- Try them mekons again. They appeal to a lot of people. But it appears from your comments -- no disrespect intended at all -- that your musical tastes are very complex . . .
