I know Mazen Kerbaj is one of the co-owners of Al Maslakh, his old comic blog was www.kerbaj.com and here's an excerpt he did as an improv duo of trumpet & the Israeli air force over Beirut during the last military incursion. (The full 40 minutes version can be found somewhere). www.youtube.com...

Jeff, I'm just back from a copy editors' conference. I was awash in lovely vocabulary throughout it. Bracing, like applying fresh compost while prepping a garden.

Brian in UK:

Jeff on impulse (not the label) I bought ticket for William Parker at Cafe Oto after Doug played him on Friday. Not really tuned into Mr Parker. Any entry points?
Avatar 12:50pm
doca:

@Brian: I lost touch with WP the last few years, but I think all his output in the 90s is worthwhile, though he releases dozens of albums. Why not something from his band back then, In Order To Survive?
Avatar 12:51pm
doca:

Sound Unity (2005) and Scrapbook (2003) were also some favorites of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Jeff Golick:

@Brian: SO MANY entry points. His best stuff in quartet form, imho, is probably the album Sound Unity.
Avatar 12:52pm
doca:

I think neither William Parker can keep track of all his recordings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Jeff Golick:

Going back a ways, he played with Cecil Taylor in the 70s and 80s, more recently as The Feel Trio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Jeff Golick:

His "Blue Series" records on thirsty ear, Painter's Spring and Pastoral Composure (w Matt Shipp) and Scrapbook (as doca noted), are also worthwhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Jeff Golick:

...and for good measure, the David S Ware quartet sides are great (Ware, Shipp, Parker, and a few different drummers)!
Avatar 12:56pm
doca:

That 10-CD box of his playing with Cecil Taylor is amazing, though surely not an entry point to to his work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Jeff Golick:

(What doca said; it's Two Ts for a Lovely T, I think?)
Avatar 12:58pm
doca:

Yeah, I remember David S. Ware quartet was my entry point to free jazz some 10-12 years ago, good days. Still don't know how I got to know it.
Anyway, Brian, there's a lot to cover but all is good.
  12:59pm
Peter:

I second "Sound Unity" as the entry point for William Parker, and then maybe the first "Raining on the Moon." For more out, "The Peach Orchard" from the "In Order to Survive" line-up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks doca, Jeff & Peter. Phew. Thought it was a kind of dumb question.
Is it true that he also plays the kora?
Avatar 1:03pm
doca:

@Jeff: that one! Hard stuff, nice stuff
@Brian: yes, he has an album with Joe Morris and Hamid Drake in which they all switch to other instruments, but I don't know if Parker plays the kora on that. It's Eloping with the Sun, the name of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm

Discogs lists Roswell Rudd on this track on trumpet. That can't be right, right? www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:47pm
doca:

Only for the trumpet, isn't it? It's a very international record (as those usually were in Italy back then). I was going to ask if the band was all-Italian or not...
Avatar 🥁 1:53pm

This post has Roswell Rudd on trombone groups.google.com...
Don't know what that guy knows that discogs doesn't, but I bet the trumpet part is misprint.

I didn't know this Horo label before. It's pretty amazing

Yup, doca. We try to grab any/all Horos we can find. The Sun Ra sides are particularly great.
Avatar 1:58pm
ndbob:

I need to go... excellent show Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Jeff Golick:

@duke: I think you (and that post) are right. It would be the height of irony/perversion to have Rudd play trumpet on a tune called "Tromblues."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, ndbob! Thanks for listening!

"Arhythm Songy" - Threadgill, right channel; Braxton, left channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Sorry, got sucked into work there. Nope, nothing to report, on the serial comma front, other than the folks using AP and Chicago got along nicely at the conference despite differing on that point. The casino booze may or may not have helped broker a peace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
fred:

@Jeff: When are you coming to Paris? The recent mayoral election results didn't spell doom for local venues, which is as well as could be hoped for

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks as ever to you, @ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Jeff Golick:

@fred: if all goes according to plan, the fam is headed to Paris next summer, maybe early July -- a 50th bday present for my wife. And of course the rest of us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
fred:

If you can, make it June rather than July, summer is dead in Paris, the best venues just close shop

Captain Hate:

Sound Unity is WPs "O'Neal's Porch" band,no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
