your turn liz, we are all so curious...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
fred:

Russell was so funny, his bitchy put downs of people he disliked were great, and he knew how to pace the fun breaks from the serious stuff. I've read the Tractatus well over twenty times, I love it even more than PI. On Certainty is kinda weak, too repetitive

@Liz: I couldn't leave him out, he's an icon. Seriously, his solo "fill-ins" are amazing radio, he clued me to Atoms, Motion, and the Void, which is great radio. He's a clown, and a wise one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am
fred:

@FVH: you should see them live, the only predictable thing is that they'll be better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am
Liz Berg:

I regret to say I'm not so well-versed in philosophy. Spent most of my higher education in science labs. Read a few tomes here and there (Sartre, Derrida, etc), but I wouldn't say I subscribe to any in particular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Liz Berg:

Maybe you guys can suggest some reading for me?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
DCE:

Liz the scientist! I love it
Avatar 10:25am
bibi:

on certainty is an aphorism greatest hits. so over 100 pages it's just unbearable if not from a funky one like cioran or kierkegaard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
fred:

@Liz: I may be French, but you probably know much more about French philosophy than I do. I tried to read those guys but wouldn't recommend them except as sleep aids. Though Marx and Keynes can't be beat for sleep-inducing, if all fails you can beat yourself to sleep, there are hefty works
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
mariano:

@fred: was gonna say, a conspicuous lack of French philosophers. Years ago, a friend of mine much better versed in philosophy than I am guided me through Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals, which is a really tough but rewarding reading, another treasure trove of aphorisms, like most of his work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
fred:

@bibi: never tried Cioran or Kierkegaard. They look too sentimental for me, I may be wrong about that. I've a great track record of being wrong about stuff
  10:31am
Sonofnothing - Wallkill, NY:

Good stuff here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Guido from Cologne:

Only read secundary literature and quotations.
For sure I hate Heidegger for bothering the reader with his horrible syntax constructions (more focus on syntax constructions than essencial ideas ... obnoxious).
Russel was good in explaining things (read his history of philosophy).
Wittgenstein helped to put the focus on building blocks of thoughts and kicked some inpulses into informatics.
Walter Benjamin put the right questions long before the dawn of Andy Warhol.
Avatar 10:32am
bibi:

the best way to philosphy maybe remains the good old greek fashion, talking under a tree, or around a nice wfmu show.
@fred, yr list suggested well you are not a sentimental one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
fred:

@mariano: I tried but could never make it through any of Nietzche's books, sophomoric to me. To paraphrase Russell in his bitchy mode: for someone so keen on the Super Man, he seemed all to eager to get whipped by a dominatrix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
mariano:

@Guido: yeah, Benjamin, and Auerbach -- Mimesis was another big milestone read for me, as for a lot of people.
@fred: well, give the guy a break, he did have syphilis! Besides, the whole Uebermensch thing gets overemphasized with him, I believe. But I do appreciate Russell's bitchiness.
Avatar 10:35am
doca:

@fred: best comment possible on Nietzsche
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am
fred:

@bibi: I'm a software developer by trade, and I've often said I saw that as applied philosophy. Wittgenstein is directly useful there, French philosophers not at all
Avatar 10:36am
doca:

I think Walter Benjamin is an essential reading for today's world, one of the few writers I look for "guidance" (whatever that means).
Avatar 10:37am
doca:

Plus he's relatively easy to read, writing in a kinda poetic way.
Avatar 10:39am
bibi:

@mariano, i do agree, the uebermensch is a regular & easy misinterpretation.
yeah, benjamin, thats a good idea for liz, it's a very pleasant (philosophical) reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
fred:

@mariano: Russell always made it clear he was switching into what I call "bitchy mode", and the total lack of fairness was part of the fun, like his routine about his being the Pope
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Guido from Cologne:

Nietsche was kinda punkt the 19th centuriy Burgeois intellectuals. I read Zarathustra: I doupt if it's really philosophy.
Avatar 10:42am
doca:

I imagine Nietzsche and Wagner as the 19th century equivalent of the Sex Pistols
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
mariano:

@fred: Nietzsche was always in bitchy mode too, which is why I like aphorisms, whether they make sense or not. He just seems like someone fun to sit with at a tavern and listen to him hold forth. Don't know if he has much status as a serious philosopher these days, but AJ Ayer has lots of really cool stories associated with him, like when he confronted Mike Tyson (Ayer was in his 70s and looked a good bit like Orville Redenbacher) and got him to back down.
Avatar 10:44am
doca:

Today's the 50th "anniversary" of Brazilian military coup d'état. I'm standing in expectation for the day to be over as the pile of shit celebrating it gets bigger and bigger

Is there actually a verb Punken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
mariano:

@Guido & fred: part of the reason Nietzsche resonated with me is that I have a bit of a Classics background, so when I read him saying that Greek philosophy started going downhill with Socrates, it really made me take notice: I like a nice competing narrative, especially given the reverence with which Classics are usually approached.
Avatar 10:50am

@drums: I think not eheh I guess in German it is not so easy to create verbs as it is in English, but I'm only guessing.

Ok, this calls for the Philosophers' Drinking Song maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am

@doca: I put Popper in my top ten, his criticism of Plato was convincing to me. And I had been (academically) raised to worship Plato
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Guido from Cologne:

Classical Philosophy: different times and models of thinking. I actually read some Cicero's philosophical fictional debates of rivaling philosophical schools. Can be pretty odd to today's brain. Plato can be alsp pretty odd.
Avatar 10:54am
doca:

@Guido: that's true, but this concept doesn't do justice to his philosophy. Besides, I think most ancient philosophers or philosophers until the 19th century would fall on that category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
Guido from Cologne:

No verb "punken" in "official German", but you coul invent one.
Avatar 10:55am

Ancient Greece was suffering from too much corruption. Russel had described Sparta (proto fashist military state) as the ancient Greek's ideal desire for law and order and in the following adds a quote by Aristoteles "you can get nothing working in Sparta without payola". Like it was Soviet Union already.

Ancient Greek society, for all the talk of democracy, was, depending on the location, pretty undemocratic by our standards. For women it was something similar to living under the Taliban. And Plato's Republic? No theater (and presumably no TV or cinema then) and all music and poetry had to be in praise of the state? Sounds a lot like North Korea.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya'
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates himself was permanently pissed...

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away;
Half a crate of whiskey every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart: "I drink, therefore I am"
Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed!
