Good morning, Dave!

Thanks for providing the soundtrack while I subtitle a Vietnamese samurai film to Dutch using a German template. I don't understand a word of Vietnamese, so whatever got mistranslated into German will be doubly mistranslated by me, resulting in subtitling hilarity.

Sem Chumbo:

What's all this loud nois...oh, it's Dave Bombay. Hiya, and good morning. Here, it is ketchup, not refrigerated.
Avatar 6:25am
Dave Bombay:

Good morning Hark! I can only imagine the subtitle hilarity that is ensuing!
Avatar 6:25am
ausmanx:

ah, you got two subtitlers listening in Dave... i'm doing a hyper-violent Spanish crime film... Spanish into English
Avatar 6:26am
Dave Bombay:

Yo yo Sem and Ausmanx!

Did anyone bring the mustard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27am
Sem Chumbo:

Don't you mean "Did someone cut the mustard?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28am
Sem Chumbo:

Lost something in the translation.
Avatar 6:28am
Dave Bombay:

Someone has to have brought mustard for it to be cut right?

Good morning Dave!
Good morning people!
Do I hear sound from Cologne?
I think I do!

@ Ausmanx: Don't you love this job? Working from home, listening to WFMU, watching movies and getting paid for it.

I worked on a Spanish film too some time ago, something about witches eating children and a bank robbing Jesus. What's yours about? Cops and guns?
Avatar 6:32am
Dave Bombay:

Hi there Guido!

Hi there Guido!
Avatar 6:32am
Dave Bombay:

@hark & Ausmanx - How did you guys get into Subtitling?
Avatar 6:33am
ausmanx:

cocaine trafficking into Spain and Islamic extremists, you know the kind of thing. i vaguely recall a bankrobbing Jesus, i might have done that one! it is a great job, i have to say. i haven't done any Viet films for a while, though! amazing to work into Dutch though, much more specialised!
  6:37am
sweir:

Great show Dave. Thank you!
Avatar 6:39am
Dave Bombay:

Thanks Sweir! Glad you dig it!
Avatar 6:40am
ausmanx:

got a degree in literature, Dave. that makes you basically unemployable, except for something like this! Australian TV actually has the only in-house foreign language subtitling unit in the world. i've been here 24 years!
Avatar 6:41am
HarktheUmpire:

@ Ausmanx: Cocaine trafficking? Haven't come across that before. Islamic extremists are popular though. Bank robbing Jesus was in this film: www.imdb.com...
I subtitle into English most of the time. German to English.

@ Dave: I was lucky to find an internship a couple of years ago, because I never actually studied languages. I studied arts and science (cultural studies basically). Guess I'm the cheap labor that's ruining the business for others.
Avatar 6:41am
Dave Bombay:

Thats awesome! I have an equally unhelpful degree...
Avatar 6:50am
ausmanx:

oh, i don't know that one, Hark. must be another bankrobbing Jesus. but Iglesias is great, Accion Mutante one of the grossest films ever... as long as getting the degree was fun, Dave...
Avatar 6:52am
Dave Bombay:

It was a lot of fun, but now that I am in the real world, I am trying to find a new gig. It will all work out in the end.
Avatar 7:18am
HarktheUmpire:

Thanks for the tip ausmanx. The last one he did was mildly amusing. A Greek/Scottish friend subtitled a Greek cooking show for SBS Australia, "Come Dine with Me." Did you see it? Awful show.

I didn't know what to do with my degree either. It was great while it lasted and now I can talk shit about German philosophy and I have a deep distrust for words. That makes me perfectly qualified to stay home and listen to WFMU.
Avatar 7:20am
Dave Bombay:

Hahaha I feel that for sure. I think that it is funny that I feel the most comfortable at WFMU which is the most musically uncomfortable place I have ever known.
Avatar 7:40am
ausmanx:

h, small world! i know your Greek/Scottish friend... I edited the subs for COME DINE WITH ME! yes, truly awful, but we showed 90 episodes!

If anyone knows someone from german Vox "Das perfekte Dinner"-producers crew, then the circle is closed.

Dave in Vermont:

If I leave the house what genre will I tell people these last several songs are?
Avatar 8:02am
Dave Bombay:

I would call this "shoegaze"
Avatar 8:02am
ausmanx:

yeah, they're all very good here, hark... you should apply for a job with us!
Avatar 8:06am
HarktheUmpire:

Actually, that might work!
Who do I write to offer freelance work?
Avatar 8:10am
ausmanx:

can't do any harm, just send references (in Dutch would be esp good, we still have a few Germans here) to the Subtitling Unit at SBS and ask if you can go on the list for casual work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Guido from Cologne:

Four star-clicks on shoegaze section.
Good average.
