	4:20am Whooda: Jack Bruce recently spoke in the Ginger Baker documentary that he (Jack Bruce) liked Baker's long drum solos because it gave him a chance to leave the stage and smoke a cigarette.

	4:23am Fran: Morning all - I'm one of those whose mental snooze clock hasn't yet readjusted to the 7am UK start! Was a bit disorientated listening to the proto Phil Collins drumming on Ricky Martin's Livin La Gadda da Vida a few minutes ago but I'm OK now
	4:23am Whooda: It is surprisingly good, a must see. Baker's ambition was to be the best jazz drummer or at least accepted as worthy with the other great jazz drummers. He came from a jazz background and always saw himself as a jazz drummer.
	4:26am Fran: The other theory about Jack's delight about Toad or other long solo moments was that it distracted Ginger from killing Jack for a while at least! Ginger's latest band Jazz Confusion is worth seeing if you get a chance.
	4:27am Whooda: That's funny! And likely more true than not.
	4:29am Fran: Ginger's stint in Hawkwind was interesting - a great album in Levitation but a missed opportunity to release something called Maniac at the Edge of Time!

	4:33am Fran: Go to Fruits de Mer Crabstock if you can - I shall be at the UK event in Cardigan, Wales headlined by the wonderful Sendelica - and it even has a commemorative beer!! Bill - investigate Sendelica - space rockers of quality!
	4:44am Fran: Ah ha! Go4 - this has a hallowed spot in the Fran vinyl temple!

	4:50am Bill Mac: Yep first couple of GO4 and Killing Joke albums opened my eyes to some of the best music of that period.

	4:52am Fran: Yes the Go4 and one or two contemporaries livened up my later school years and showed me how to spend my pockey money wisely!
	4:54am Bill Mac: I always complain about the 80s as being a weak time in music, but there was a plethora of goodly shit out there if you just took the time...

	4:56am Looms: I never spent a dime on Gang Of Four's music though I always liked what I heard, shame on me! Hi Jay!

	4:56am Fran: For sure Bill - it was a really healthy scene but hasn't been given a fair hearing due to a lot of really arch rubbish involving hairspray, Don Johnson's trousers and synth drums!
	4:57am Bill Mac: That's funny I was thinking the opposite Jay. I think it started well then it got bad, then it recovered in time for the 90s.
	4:58am Fran: Hi Jay. My view of the 80's was good start, mixed middle and then some good stuff at the end obscured by crap that developed into Britpop and landfill indie
	4:59am Bill Mac: @Fran - they were too dainty to be referred to as trousers.
	4:59am Jay/London: it seemed to lose its way after punk then got a new heading later on in about 84
	5:00am Fran: Heh heh - white billowing sheets of cheesiness rather than trousers then!

	5:01am Bill Mac: The skinny tie phase was rough, but yeah, good stuff by labels like SST helped salvage what could've been bland musical years.

	5:04am Fran: Agreed - skinny ties and bad synth drums, Phil Collins Murder (sorry murdering) Ballads, the genesis of Oasis, US overly styled hair metal - bad bad bad......I must stop!!

	5:11am Fran: Bill that was a noble defence of Mr Sussudio - as a drummer myself I full agree with his skills/good music in earlier Genesis and Brand X but what followed almost sent him to be thrown into rather than dance on a volcano! Now for a Phil Collins/Peter Hammill duets album!

	5:14am P-90: Phil Collins was a "pretty good drummer?" Check those Genesis albums again, he was one of the greatest ever. He saw the chance to be a different kind of pop star in the eighties and went for it, but that doesnt undo the brilliant work he did on vinyl and live before then. His Genesis work, including the first two albums after Gabriel left, is uniformly original, creative, and technically immaculate.
	5:15am Fran: Phil Collins and Peter Hammill release new album - 'You drum I hum we are Humdrum' - oh if only!!! As you might have gathered Bill I might be being ironic here........
	5:15am Bill Mac: Thank you P-90, I heartily agree. I'm glad to see we're all in the same camp on this. BTW, he's helping Adele with her new one.
	5:17am Fran: And now for the Purps - were they uniformly good or which was the best phase? I also think the Tommy Bolin period is much maligned and unfairly so!

	5:19am Fran: Cornershop - very inventive and good band by the way. One of my favourites of their's however is an alt.country style track which guested Paula Frazer of Tarnation on vocals.
	5:19am Whooda: If I remember correctly in the 80's Collins was booked years in advance to work on multiple projects and play on other's studio recordings. He was in enormous demand for his talents and creativity. His original style of pop was very important to pop music.

	5:22am Fran: Whooda - as long as that doesn't mean there is also a backlog of his 80's stuff that hasn't yet come out - I couldn't take any of that blow dried rubbish he did with Clapton for example
	5:23am Whooda: I'm not a musician but I was dumbstruck that someone could be so much in demand that there was a year's long waiting list for his time not including the projects and offers he turned down.

	5:26am P-90: I'm interested to hear the Adele/Collins project because she badly needs to be supported in doing something really original that isn''t squeezed into some contempo-crap-p-Idol style. I'm reminded that one of the more interesting things he did in the eighties was collaborating with Frida from ABBA on a solo album which was tremendously successful AND done in a progressive and original style.

(16 Years and a lot crazy) Over that we are fine, missed the marathon, pledge later and the swans...great. Going to see Thurston Moore next week with Steve Shelley in an small club. Last week i opened a long time forgotten Bag at my mothers house. There was a Record from a Band called "Angel" Double Live Album. Puh, the Clothes, all in white. What does that mean.

	4:20am Whooda: Jack Bruce recently spoke in the Ginger Baker documentary that he (Jack Bruce) liked Baker's long drum solos because it gave him a chance to leave the stage and smoke a cigarette.

	4:23am Fran: Morning all - I'm one of those whose mental snooze clock hasn't yet readjusted to the 7am UK start! Was a bit disorientated listening to the proto Phil Collins drumming on Ricky Martin's Livin La Gadda da Vida a few minutes ago but I'm OK now
	4:23am Whooda: It is surprisingly good, a must see. Baker's ambition was to be the best jazz drummer or at least accepted as worthy with the other great jazz drummers. He came from a jazz background and always saw himself as a jazz drummer.
	4:26am Fran: The other theory about Jack's delight about Toad or other long solo moments was that it distracted Ginger from killing Jack for a while at least! Ginger's latest band Jazz Confusion is worth seeing if you get a chance.

	4:29am Fran: Ginger's stint in Hawkwind was interesting - a great album in Levitation but a missed opportunity to release something called Maniac at the Edge of Time!

	5:11am Fran: Bill that was a noble defence of Mr Sussudio - as a drummer myself I full agree with his skills/good music in earlier Genesis and Brand X but what followed almost sent him to be thrown into rather than dance on a volcano! Now for a Phil Collins/Peter Hammill duets album!

	5:14am P-90: Phil Collins was a "pretty good drummer?" Check those Genesis albums again, he was one of the greatest ever. He saw the chance to be a different kind of pop star in the eighties and went for it, but that doesnt undo the brilliant work he did on vinyl and live before then. His Genesis work, including the first two albums after Gabriel left, is uniformly original, creative, and technically immaculate.

	5:19am Fran: Cornershop - very inventive and good band by the way. One of my favourites of their's however is an alt.country style track which guested Paula Frazer of Tarnation on vocals.
	5:19am Whooda: If I remember correctly in the 80's Collins was booked years in advance to work on multiple projects and play on other's studio recordings. He was in enormous demand for his talents and creativity. His original style of pop was very important to pop music.

I'm reminded that one of the more interesting things he did in the eighties was collaborating with Frida from ABBA on a solo album which was tremendously successful AND done in a progressive and original style.
