If I heard correctly, the date of composition of Aitsi is unclear? In a review by Robert Carl of this recording in Fanfare, "Scelsi's great breakthrough occurred in the late 1950s, in part when he began to improvise and transcribe the results; this in turn, perhaps apocryphally, came after a nervous breakdown, during which he played and listened obsessively to a single repeated piano pitch while institutionalized. The 1974 Aitsi seems to draw on this experience, and is a piano work like no other I've heard."

(the evil version of K.I.T.T. on Knight Rider) and the titular evil supercomputer in Colossus: The Forbin Project (which I highly recommend, and which undoubtedly inspired the Terminator movies' Skynet).

Somehow, the combination of post-60s loss of innocence and the Cold War produced some truly bleak movies and television. Heck, the number of nuclear annihilations I've seen acted out on tv alone... Let's not even mention "When The Wind Blows". "Children of Men" was definitely a modern continuation of this, rising out of current concerns.

@doca: "Silent Running" makes me think of the other ecological oldie I adore, "Edge of Darkness". I can watch it again and again.
