Why is it still at 99% though ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am
Liz Berg:

I got a few hours of sleep last night... left the finale party a bit early. So excited that we made it to 99%. I have a feeling that last 1% will roll in by the end of today!

Can't wait to see the Meghan / Keili vocal duo! ;-)

Could it be possible pledgers are hypnotized by the magical number "99".
Maybe you should have focussed on 111%?

Ralphine, we didn't ever have to pay to be an official party (maybe because we are non-profit), but we never had a fancy venue or much promotion help from the fest. I think you get a nicer venue, champagne, drugs, and friendlier soundpeople if you pay.

@cecile I didn't realize I was stepping in anything, I'll wipe my shoes before I go inside. I was only trying to give LCD some encouragement. I'm sorry for any confusion.

Maybe we should bring in Pseu to mediate this LD888 matter.

"Nicer" applies to the venue and soundpeople. There are no drugs or champagne at SXSW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Liz Berg:

Only beer and energy drinks.

My friend's hacked off because he spent a ton of money on a SXSW badge and still can't get into anything.

You said it Nate K! The last time I saw them, Buck was having a hard time remembering how to play a song. An audience member pointed to the frets needed, then Buck got it. It was great. I'm bummed that the big man, Joe Pestilance, is no longer with them.

You just won't believe how much hate Herbie got in various magazines of the time for doing the commercial stuff. Never mind that he'd be doing TSOP at the same time.

Or whatever his all-star acoustic deal was. VSOP?

VSOP?

I watched an episode of Treme last night where a group of musicians broke into a jam of Hancock's Chameleon.

It was either that or TSOL.

I first heard Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea on a 1974 episode of Soundstage on PBS. It altered my musical taste forever.

Soundstage was pretty great.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am

I was thinking Future Sound of London, but no, that's FSOL. Oops.
  11:26am

I remember a friend of mine telling me to be sure to watch Soundstage because Chick Corea was going to be on it. I said "Chick WHO?"

Mark:

Perfect segue between Herbie and Sly. They were both definitely playing in the same ballpark around that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am

Had no idea Sly did a song like this. I'm working while I listen, took me a while for my brain to process that it was actual yodeling!
Avatar 11:28am
Cecile:

I have to do a mock soul country mix some year. Kid and Play did a fake country song, and Funkadelic has a few things that would work too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
mariano:

Ray Charles did a country album too, I think.
Avatar 11:30am
Cecile:

he did a couple
Avatar 11:30am
Cecile:

but he did it seriously. I want silliness. No Solomon Burke, either.
Avatar 11:30am

@Cecile I always thought Tumblewee Connection by Elton John was a tasteful stab at the mock country/soul concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
mariano:

Didn't know: I always learn so much here!
Avatar 11:31am
Cecile:

I should revisit that, Whooda. Does it have some silliness to it as well?

@mariano - Ray Charles did indeed do a country album. Its pretty good, but I can't call up its title at the moment. (yes it was serious not silly)

Modern Sounds in Country & Western -- Ray Charles

TC is silly by concept only. In that Elton John would do country. There are some terrific songs, classics maybe.
Avatar 11:33am

Yes, exactly.
I want the mockery in mock country.
I like country music, but I also like to make fun of it.

Ralphine:

Tina Turner's "Country My Way" may be of use.
Avatar 11:34am

Whooda, it's not that much of a stretch. If you get down to the nitty gritty, country has its roots in England.

Thanks, Ralphine.

Also, that Ween album with "piss up a rope" on it might be good, too.

What's your take on Kandia Crazy Horse's album, Cecile? The song title "Gunfight at the Golden Corral" slays me.

It doesn't have to neccesarily be soulful, but it helps.

Yeah, I mean he was very sincere about it, but to me, it's still country music. Just not my cup of tea.
