It's not like they were throwing money into executive compensation either. It's a labor of love for the paid staff, and that staff is tiny. Almost all DJs are volunteers who contribute untold hours to their shows, plus duties from cleaning to the mandatory prayer circle that keeps the elevator moving. Your swag envelope might carry Kurt's saliva for all you know (that may not be an incentive)

@Doca and Fred, WNYC, the big non-commercial NPR news/talk station around here, has a massive budget and pays its chief an absurd mid-six-figure salary, yet a LOT of people in my social circle donate to them. To be fair, they have some very good programs including BBC and CBC stuff and they provide at least a few FMU DJs w/their "real" paid jobs, but I prefer to give my $$$ to FMU, a much more frugal labor of love, not a big machine full of underwriting.
