Avatar 🥁 10:28am duke:

In terms of music, I agree with Duke Ellington: There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind. I think that goes with all art. Outsider art is often good art made by someone not in the right club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am holland oats:

ok so my wally tax joke was a bit obtuse - as a frequent commenter i'd like to apologize for never making any damn sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Uncle Michael:

If someone tells me they're presenting outsider art, it doesn't offend me. It tells me that they're sharing something with me that I won't find coming from the either the pop-culture or academic factories. It's clumsy shorthand but it can be useful clumsy shorthand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Well said, duke. WFMU's genre-oblierating approach makes it hard for those "clubs" to be considered with any validity (or a straight face).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Uncle Michael:

We're used to it, holland!

worth noting: for a pledge show, doug's playing a goodly chunk of music. at public radio stations, all you get is clumsy banter. fmu asks, but it keeps on playing the sweet tunes.
Avatar 11:03am earrie:

Picking up on the categories-talk in this growing age of big databases. Categories don't scale well at all. Talking math, here . Category counts, amounts, and their definitions- they all change with scale. And yet db-jerks calculate, extrapolate and interpolate and arrive at false conclusions. 'All blanks blank.'

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Alex In Illinois:

When my Local NPR station got rid of a show called "Mambo Express", I looked up the DJ in the Chicago phone book, called him and asked what happened to his show. He was glad to hear that peopl were missing his show. I think his show is now on a suburban college station.

I like "This American Life" with Ira Glass, and that their news occasionally does things like exposing David Barton's latest book as full of fallacies, but there is not much more NPR for me. I wish there were another station to get all of the music shows that NPR keeps getting rid of.

Good morning Doug and devotees. Glenn, if Ford gets arrested, who will consume all the chicke wings and crack in Toronto?

And good morning, Carm!

@ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ I agree about the preaching to the choir. I have been trying to read/listen to the other side more - WSJ etc. However, Fox(Faux) News pushes me over the edge.

Is this Johnny Dowd up for grabs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Uncle Michael:

Cyrus!
Avatar 11:27am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

I have friends that swear by Pacifica and I'm as lefty as they come but I get the willies when I listen to it. It's like tuning in just cuz you know they'll tell you what you want to hear.

@duke: I loath WSJ and am convinced that nobody really reads it, they just like to display it on their front porch
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28am listener james from westwood:

w00t! thanks, jonathan, and all pledgers! (and RIP cyrus from "the warriors")
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:30am listener james from westwood:

the WSJ had some good writers before murdoch took it over. now many of them are with bloomberg news or the NYT, and factual stories carry a greater slant. and the editorial page, already thuggish, has become as trollish as the rest of the news corp empire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am pacific standard simon:

@ ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ - Yeah, that's the kind of stuff they got more into. They were always that way, but they had some kind of cleansing of more diverse elements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

THANK YOU Jonathon for your Mouse of Today pledge!!!!
Avatar 11:34am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

Everyone who subscribes to WSJ in my neighborhood leaves them sitting on the porch, sidewalk until they start to rot in the plastic. Which is pretty much where it belongs. Why would you trust a bunch of pro-business yahoos to tell you what's going on in the world? Hoooo boy, I need some more coffee...with whiskey in it...screw the coffee..
Avatar 11:36am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

man I wanted to spread my pledges out over 2 weeks but I fear I'm already running out of dough...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Alex In Illinois:

When Pacifica first appeared on the scene, it was refreshing to have something that was the polar opposite of all of the right wing junk, and not afraid to air what NPR was too afraid to air. I am not sure how reliable my memory is, but I thought I heard an interview on Pacifica a few weeks BEFORE 9/11/2001 about an attack by al Queda likely to occur and how President Bush should be preparing for such a possibility
Avatar 11:36am ndbob:

The WSJ is a great paper in a lot of ways - just ignore the editorial page
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Stanley:

I just got back from the river 'bank' with some cash.
I think I know where there might be some more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am pacific standard simon:

People used to say that The Christian Science Monitor was a great newspaper (never mind the religion), but all I could think was, "But they're Christian Scientists!"
  11:38am van:

Love to see the Cow mooing!
Avatar 11:38am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

to me the editorial page defines the paper. but I'm being way too negative and absolutist...
Avatar 11:38am ndbob:

though as James says, it's gone downhill overall
Avatar 11:39am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

I was up all night with sick mrs. ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ and ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ jr. so the filter is gone.

Doug, I chose the African Twang as one of my premiums. Can't wait to spin it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Brian in UK:

The Funkees sounds familiar from another premium.
Wow, 19% to go.
Avatar 11:41am ndbob:

@Alex I like the NPR hourly news, but a lot of NPR coverage is repetitive and bland - and I'm still annoyed that the took of "Talk of the Nation" leading to the demise of "The Political Junkie"

Avatar 11:43am Carmichael:

@bob, me too. I really don't like most of the new shows they recently started, and I miss the old ones like Talk of the Nation. And no more Terry Gross! Ted Talks sucks, and really, a show about cooking?!?

The reputation of the CSM is indeed one of the paradoxes of modern media. For all of Mary Baker Eddy's weirdness, though, you gotta hand it to a church (organization, whatever) that runs storefront reading rooms.

Avatar 11:45am ndbob:

@Carmichael I listen to a number of the Slate podcasts, and to several science ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Alex In Illinois:

Yes, the repetitive and bland part has me checking the NPR news usually only once a day or every other day.

i like a number of the npr podcasts, such as sci fri, the moth, radiolab, and planet money. the latter was a great aid during the financial crisis a few years back. car talk turns everything i see red red red with blood.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am pacific standard simon:

@Dean - I know! Our main street has one of those reading rooms and, like all CS reading rooms, it looks like the coolest old school relaxing place to read a book ever. If I had a million bucks, I'd give half of it to FMU, then hire whoever designs CS reading rooms to design a new den for me.
Avatar 11:49am northguineahills:

Unrelated to African twang, country songbooks were apparently popular in today's Zimbabwe & Zambia in the 30s-40s for some reason.
Avatar 11:49am ndbob:

I listen to that at times, but to the Science magazine and Nature podcasts regularly - a little more rigorous.
