Roller skated for a friend's informal birthday gathering about a month ago. Did pretty well until I bruised wrists and hands, scraped my knee up nice 'n ugly, and gave my top lip the ol' smasheroo. ("Oof! Down! Well, this isn't too bad...wait, my head's still got some forward momentu -- BAM!")

LovecraftDude - is it weird that i walk down St Marks all the time and didn't even realize it was still there?? i guess cuz its probably since its closed most of the time.
  3:54pm
LovecraftDude888:

Steve..ha! I read that it's only been open weekends for awhile....I was there a few years ago and it was like, not as good as once it was, that's for sure, but nice that it was open at least. It's doomed, they are showing the realty right now....oh my. But is that good falafel joint still there down the block?

re: Sounds -- had no idea they were still open. remember a lotta $1 LPs from other stores with Sounds stickers on em
  4:01pm
LovecraftDude888:

Scott...I can't believe they'd reopened a few years back, and was skeptical...it was ok, nothing great. Last time that place was great was maybe mid to late 1990s from my recollection. Once Coney Island High closed...signaled the beg. of end The CD Sounds down street was good, too

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm

@LCD - That falafel joint is gone, too, I think. That's what my wife reported last month. (if its the same one you're thinking of)
Avatar 4:06pm
steve:

Mamoun's on St Marks? that's still there, i think, if thats what you're thinking of. also its worth noting that there's still several great record stores in Manhattan - the ones that are doing good seem to have changed in accordance with what people are actually still buying in droves these days - Other Music, Academy, Turntable Lab
  4:07pm
LovecraftDude888:

Mike E...oh no. Oh gonna cry...hehe. that sucks. Mamouns I think, yeah...the one downstairs closer to 2nd Ave.? I read he's still around the Village in other locations though. Steve...yeah still some shops around. OM is great.....Academy great....and TLab I went there a few times just to check it out, nice guys actually.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Ike:

That's a fairly new Mamoun's, an insanely overrated chain, whose falafel is blander than cold day-old unspiced mashed potato on a bed of iceberg lettuce and stale Wonderbread.

Falafel science in NYC has advanced significantly since the 90s -- pay a couple extra bucks and get actual FLAVOR at newer places like Nish Nush, the Hummus Place, or Pitopia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Mike East:

may be a different one...or perhaps my wife is confused. perhaps both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Mike East:

I used to go to Joe's for used CD's on St. Marks but they closed years ago.
  4:12pm
Bob:

Smokin' track, Scott!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Mike East:

I agree, Ike - Mamouns definitely not the best falafel. Possibly the cheapest, and probably the most name recognition, but that only counts for so much.
  4:12pm
LovecraftDude888:

Ike..yeah, read it's not really that good now. alas. And Norman's Sound closed and supp. moved to Brooklyn. I dunno.

I once got an amazing "age ice" at Japadog, a deep-fried bun filled with black sesame ice cream -- sounds terrible, but it was a brilliant hot/cold contrast. But the 2nd time I tried it, it was terrible! What happened, Japadog?! What happened?!
