Do you have that Satyricon song "Phoenix"?
  12:16pm
V Priceless:

Hey Diane! Very postal of you to soldier on thru the maelstrom to do your show today! Thanks!!

tim from champaign:

Hey Diane and folks. Any opinions of the Sabbath album Mob Rules? I don't have it.
Avatar 12:18pm
Diane Kamikaze:

You must acquire MOB RULES!!!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Agreed...Ronnie James Dio was on top of his game on Mob Rules.
  12:19pm
LovecraftDude888:

it's good if you are into Dio and all that...I'm into that phase to some degree, not massively but he was good. and Heaven and Hell isn't bad.
Avatar 12:20pm
Cecile:

Mob Rules is a blindingly great album, except for Coutry Girl, which just makes me giggle.
Avatar 12:20pm
kirk from beer city usa:

usedta have that one, but haven't in a while. I seem to recall that I liked it better than heaven & hell, the other Ronnie James Dio LP.
  12:20pm
V Priceless:

@ Tim: hate to play the purist, but IMHO, no Bill Ward, no BS!
Avatar 12:21pm
Cecile:

if you listen to fools, the mob rules

but we're not fools, so go get mob rules.
Avatar 12:22pm
Cecile:

kirk, RJD did at least four records with Black Sabbath
  12:22pm
LovecraftDude888:

actually I forgot Bill wasn't on that album...gheesh! I dunno I still prefer the classic Sabbath LPs, for sure. The new one was meh....some thought it stellar, I didn't.
  12:22pm
V Priceless:

My bad. Automatically thinking new rekkid. Too much of the white stuff in my brain!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
tim from champaign:

OK, that's what I needed to know. It actually was the lack of Bill Ward which is why I shied away from it. Thanks buddies!
Avatar 12:26pm
Cecile:

I liked the extra tracks on the Dio Years comp. The Devil Cried is pretty amazing. "I told Satan what a jerk you were, and he even cried."
  12:26pm
LovecraftDude888:

Some bands would just break up...but then again AC/DC soldiered on....figuring I guess that Bon would have wanted it that way, in that case....I'm sure....and with BS they were prob. so fed up with Ozzy's antics they weren't gonna let the band die that way. Led Zep was another story, of course.
Avatar 12:27pm
Cecile:

this should be a fricking hit places besides Norway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Luna:

Greetings.
Avatar 12:28pm
Cecile:

Lovecraftdude, the more I read about the last days of Bon Scott, I believe he and the Youngs would have parted ways eventually. So, yeah, continuing made sense.
Avatar 12:28pm
Cecile:

hey, luna!
Avatar 12:29pm
Diane Kamikaze:

AND if you'd like to ask PEER PRESSURE guest Kembra Pfahler (The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black), please post!!
  12:29pm
LovecraftDude888:

Cecile...yeah that's quite possibly true. I read not long ago that indeed Bon had many more issues than alcohol, heroin, pills, coke whatever, I believe. So lord knows. He was not in good shape that's obvious, understatement.
Avatar 12:30pm
Cecile:

I got nothin' for once.
Avatar 12:30pm
Cecile:

YES.
  12:31pm
LovecraftDude888:

seems like his replacement is rock-solid, I'll give him that, he never self-destructed and could have! That guy is unstoppable.
Avatar 12:31pm
Cecile:

He was also 10 yrs older than the Youngs and had been on the road for nearly 20 years by the time he passed. He also had wider tastes in music, literature and pretty much everything else than his bandmates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
listener james from westwood:

w00t! sign of the southern cross! used to put this & the next 2 tracks on mixtapes. tough to break 'em up.
  12:32pm
LovecraftDude888:

oh aye..I see, sure. That might not have lasted, anyhow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Luna:

Hi Cecile. And everyone else. Diggin' the SABBATH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
mariano:

I like the Dio phase of Sabbath, but for different reasons. Their sound really changed. I thought Dio was only on two albums, though, H&H and MR.
Avatar 12:32pm
Cecile:

Lovecraft, I was always a bit dubious about AC DC with Brian, but I finally saw them live, and he was a fitting successor. A really great showman.
Avatar 12:33pm
Cecile:

nope, Dehumanizer
Avatar 12:34pm
kirk from beer city usa:

Cecile: I forgot about the live one. wikipedia lists Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981), Dehumanizer (1992), and Live Evil (1982). Missed the 1992 one.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Live Evil, too.
  12:34pm
LovecraftDude888:

oh yeah for sure..I never saw them live, sadly, but I was always a fan and I have an old HS pal who was huge into them and met Brian a few years back, sent me the pics to prove! hehe!

This is in my top 5 Dio era Sabbath songs.
Avatar 12:35pm

yup, that one, too Ken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm

Holy shit, this song convinced me that I ABSOLUTELY need to get Mob Rules. Thanks, Diane. This song is like a malevolent bulldozer.
Avatar 12:36pm
Cecile:

Brian seems like a very nice guy.
Avatar 12:36pm
Cecile:

tim, and it's not even the best song on the album, IMO. You will not go wrong with mob rules.
Avatar 12:36pm
MenfussMike:

i think the Live Evil version is better....more Satanic.
Avatar 12:36pm
Diane Kamikaze:

My absolute pleasure, TFC! Dehumanizer is great, by the way. I have seen Sabbath with every singer. Iommi was still carrying the hammer, no matter what!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm

@cecile, @kirk Oh, I see: lost track of them by the early 90s. I remember they went through a bunch of singers, Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes (I think), etc.
Avatar 12:40pm
MenfussMike:

i didnt care for dehumanizer (saw that tour). The last GREAT sabbath album was BORN AGAIN with Gillan on vocals
Avatar 12:40pm
Cecile:

NICE!

I think an old friend of mine (long lost) lived in Kembra's building in NYC for a bit....so she told me
Avatar 12:43pm

Loved Gillan on vocals. Saw that show in NJ's Brendan Byrne arena..

Hi Diane. Could i make a hate request dedicated to Ken. That jerk punked me last night on 7 sec delay when he tricked Andy in to believing Don Mclean had died in a ballooning accident. I only heard 15mins of the show and it was the first thing i mentioned when i went to retreive my amps from the repairman. Got back in the car and they didn't say it was a joke till the last min of the show. He will rue the day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm

The iron maiden was a later fictional invention, they never existed in the Middle Ages, and were invented by (mainly Victorian) artists who wanted to portray how backward Medieval people were. There's no historical account of an iron maiden ever existing before they were placed in Victorian wax museums. Pretty much everything we picture as Medieval really comes from the Victorian era.
Avatar 1:26pm
Cecile:

that's because people like us are finally curating things
  1:27pm
LovecraftDude888:

also fictional was the dreaded Marillion. that pit and the pendulum thing was questionable as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
mariano:

Yeah, but Pit & Pendulum: what a story! And without the iron maiden, we wouldn't have Iron Maiden.
  1:29pm

Indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

Well, there was being hanged, drawn, and quartered, though that was used more in the early modern era. And the ancient Persians had a particularly nasty form of execution called scaphism, Google it, but only if you have a strong stomach!

  2:05pm
LovecraftDude888:

the novel is a much more claustrophobic "serious" experience, even than the film. I wrote an essay on Blatty and his works years ago....
  2:06pm
LovecraftDude888:

they cut that bit cause Friedkin thought it was too much or Blatty did..or something
  2:06pm
V Priceless:

I think a big part of the what made that movie so terrifying back when it was released was no incidental music to give away scary scenes. Only the excellent Tubular Bells soundtrack.
