  1:32pm Figures of Light:

Micragirls -- another KILLER!! Joe, where do you find this stuff!! Just a killer set!!
  1:34pm Robert:

My opinion may not be widely shared, but "Give Me a Kiss" is a demonstration of how pedestrian most Beatles pieces were--so much so that they could be delivered in compact form like that.
  1:35pm Figures of Light:

Is this from the soundtrack of GET YOURSELF A COLLEGE GIRL?
  1:35pm Woo:

Robert, I do not share your opinion.
Avatar 1:36pm cd tap:

neither do I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Robert: It's Pop Music - the best Pop Music. Read 'Tell Me Why' by Tim Riley to have it broken down what & how much exactly they fit into two minutes...
Avatar 1:36pm Michael Shelley:

Really enjoying today's show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- 'compact form' was the whole point...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Brian Jones slide...
  1:43pm Robert:

What you guys are writing about "pop music" is true. But the Beatles, who were excellent technically and could play anything well, were treated as if THEIR "pop music" compositions weren't like the rest of that kind. That gave them a reputation that allowed them to make a lot of money and produce some really interesting stuff, but MOST of their compositions--the ones that made them money--were cookie-cutter and so can easily be mashed up.
  1:43pm Figures of Light:

Gotta go to work -- killer set!! Keep on rocking!!
  1:43pm LovecraftDude888:

the zigzaggin Boulders
  1:43pm LovecraftDude888:

  1:43pm Figures of Light:

Robert, you try too hard!!
  1:46pm Robert:

If you think I try too hard, last night I read a youth football coach report that his children are so diligent, they often return to their completed homework to check or proofread it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm paul b:

Recently saw a series of pictures on NPR's website of what the Washington Coliseum looks like today: www.npr.org... I had forgotten this is where the Beatles played. I pass it all the time (you can see it from the DC Metro red line just north of the Union Station stop)
  1:47pm LovecraftDude888:

homework...I would do it, usually, and get it over with ASAP. And then go play records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Robert: I agree that The Beatles took over the marketplace @ the expense of many others that were worthy - & that it's overstated that between Elvis & The Beatles there was nothing. That's actually something I'm very interested in. In fact - this here is a Program that notably champions those dispossessed - w/ Surf & Garage & the like.
- But The Beatles not worthy on merit? - uh uh. The Beatles were Destiny.
Avatar 1:53pm cd tap:

yeah, there was a difference in most of Beatles early stuff from everything else. Their chord progressions alone were kind of crazy given the state of rock/pop at the time. And each time they changed, they were slightly ahead (leading) everyone else. I think that's pretty significant.
Avatar 1:55pm cd tap:

AND, they were so dang funny...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - The Beatles were a mature summation & concentration of most of what had gone before that was good - & pointing forward - like McGuinn saying The Beatles were already FolkRawk before The Byrds...& yeah, Style & Humor - so easy to take for granted now how much they were a departure from crew-cut 50s America...
  1:57pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm much of the theory that the Beatles were 10000x better as they went...Rubber Soul or Revolver onwards I'm much more into than the earliest stuff, by far. Esp. White Album and all that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Mike East:

@cd tap - On one of the many recent looks back at the Beatles on the TV news, they show the Hard Days Night clip "How did you find America? Turn left at Greenland"....I once again cracked up like it was the first time I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm common:

exactly, joe.
Avatar 2:00pm cd tap:

@Mike: classic. I try to use that but no one ever says "how did you find so-and-so" anymore...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Hard Day's Night' is so f'ing good.
Avatar 2:01pm Tom from Detroit:

I personally love the airport interview where they get asked "what about the claim you're just a bunch of English Elvises?....." and Ring and John start shaking their butts and shoulders all over the place screaming "it's not true, it's not true!......"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Mike East:

the other one that still gets me EVERY time is Ringo's: "I'm a Mocker" (mod/rocker)...and the woman's laugh afterward is hilarious as well.
Avatar 2:02pm cd tap:

"hey, bee-ahtol..."
  2:02pm Robert:

All I know is, when we saw them on Ed Sullivan, I was just as mystified as my parents and grampa what the big deal was. They didn't seem much different from other acts he had on, yet the girls were swooning.

OTOH, Elvis Presley was if anything UNDERrated as a performer. In 1969 my family dragged me to his comeback show in Las Vegas, and I went in thinking of his material as cornball, etc., but came out very impressed by how that guy could ENTERTAIN!
  2:03pm LovecraftDude888:

Mike isn't that bit also in Hard Day's Night with George doing it to the old stiff?
Avatar 2:03pm cd tap:

I was heavily into mod crap when I was a teenager..until I realized rockabilly was soooo much fucking cooler. Then I became a mocker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Beatles loved Elvis.
