What you guys are writing about "pop music" is true. But the Beatles, who were excellent technically and could play anything well, were treated as if THEIR "pop music" compositions weren't like the rest of that kind. That gave them a reputation that allowed them to make a lot of money and produce some really interesting stuff, but MOST of their compositions--the ones that made them money--were cookie-cutter and so can easily be mashed up.

Recently saw a series of pictures on NPR's website of what the Washington Coliseum looks like today: www.npr.org... I had forgotten this is where the Beatles played. I pass it all the time (you can see it from the DC Metro red line just north of the Union Station stop)

@Robert: I agree that The Beatles took over the marketplace @ the expense of many others that were worthy - & that it's overstated that between Elvis & The Beatles there was nothing. That's actually something I'm very interested in. In fact - this here is a Program that notably champions those dispossessed - w/ Surf & Garage & the like.
- But The Beatles not worthy on merit? - uh uh. The Beatles were Destiny.

yeah, there was a difference in most of Beatles early stuff from everything else. Their chord progressions alone were kind of crazy given the state of rock/pop at the time. And each time they changed, they were slightly ahead (leading) everyone else. I think that's pretty significant.

All I know is, when we saw them on Ed Sullivan, I was just as mystified as my parents and grampa what the big deal was. They didn't seem much different from other acts he had on, yet the girls were swooning.

OTOH, Elvis Presley was if anything UNDERrated as a performer. In 1969 my family dragged me to his comeback show in Las Vegas, and I went in thinking of his material as cornball, etc., but came out very impressed by how that guy could ENTERTAIN!
