Zats...they jacked up postage rates again - about.usps.com... It's 49¢ for a letter now and 34¢ to send a postcard.
Avatar 12:20am
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

That explains it -- I tried to conduct mail on Saturday and the line was much too long. I hope all those people on line are putting their 2¢ saved per stamp to good use.

@pete recently read something like the average income family of the '50's could send 435,000 postcards while the average wage today equals about 150,000 postcards. Something like that.

I was only able to send 43,238 postcards last year. It's the price of pens that is the real obstacle.
  12:25am
P-9Ø:

Don't get me started on pen prices
Avatar 12:25am

Exactly, in the fifties there were plenty of government pens that could be pinched for free from the post office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am

I'll bet the guy who patented the selfie is rich enough to send a million post cards.

If postage was 1/3rd the price it is now, did they get 3x more junk mail in the 50's?
Avatar 12:27am

I have a decades-old stash of "Skilcraft - U. S. Government" pens that have sadly mostly dried out before I could get through them.

The last time I bought a pen was at the airport so I could do a crossword puzzle. It was something like $4.29 with tax (but it says "Chicago" so at least there's VALUE in return). The newspaper was $2.00. Even boredom is expensive these days.
Avatar 12:29am

@Pete Ha! That's what I'm talking about Skilcraft with the nifty little chain attached.
@Droll in the '50's postcards were $0.01 postage

The pens that addled me the most were the ones for the Spirograph. If the ink dried out or ran out, it was hard to find some regular pen that would fit into the little holes. There are undoubtedly web sites now that can whip out Spirograph patterns flawlessly in any color you wish for.
