'With the Beatles' - British version (which the CDs generally are now) - was released the very day JFK was shot - 22nd Nov. 1963...my birth month, don't get me started...okay: C.S. Lewis & Aldous Huxley died very same day - 1st thing on BBC after JFK coverage was the 1st 'Dr. Who'...

Hello! from snowy downtown NYCeeeeeee
Avatar 12:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - they've of course put out the early Mericun versions as the 'Capitol' CDs - four I think...
- If they rerun the PBS 'American Experience' '1964' episode I think it worth watching...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Mike Sin:

Hello Joe!

Wow, interesting ... Because I'm a second-generation Beatles' geek and started buying the UK imports at Korvette's in the late '70s (after reading about them in the Roy Carr/Tony Tyler book), I've no affection for the US LPs. I guess I like the "accuracy" of the UK LPs.

Anyway, I've been digging this Brendon Benson album.
  12:46pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Belockers all...Greetings from SouthEastern FLA (temporarily). Those surf songs sounded a little less ironic here!
  12:48pm SlimPickn's:

Good snowy Tuesday music being played. Keep up the good work!
Avatar 12:48pm Joe B:

actually i like them both. sentimental value for the US versions, and preference for i feel fine, she's a woman and roll over beetheoven with reverb! there is some new box coming out of the US versions, but using the 9-9-09 remastering. not sure what the point of that is! They really should just reissue yesterday and today with the butcher. it would be a million seller!
Avatar 12:49pm Carmichael:

Dirty Fences sounded a bit like Morrisey. Yikes!
  12:50pm Toddophonic:

Beatles For Sale is my favorite. Purchased at Korvette's in the 70's!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Mike Sin:

Regarding the Beatles' "core" catalog, at this point in my life, I'm done buying any new product with that material. For me, the mono box set was the greatest bang for my buck -- that's essentially my go-to product for listening to any pre-'68 Beatles at this point.
  12:53pm Frank Above:

I 2nd Todd's vote.
Avatar 12:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I'm old enuff I got the vinyl 1st - but I'm kinda w/ MikeSin
...since the Beatles' Singles/E.P.s that didn't make it onto albums are now onthe 'Past Masters' CDs - if you put them in-between the Albums - the transitions are smoother & make more I feel.
- A great book about the actual Music is 'Tell Me Why' by Tim Riley.
...What I heards about oh-fficial Beatles releases is: a.) All four estates gotta agree on every little thing- good luck... b.) They're kinda a proud bunch - & want for top quality as they perceive it on all releases - & wanna for sure Chart high w/ whatever they put out...
Hey!: Are those Copyright Renewal 1963 tracks still up on iTunes - ??...
Avatar 12:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...make more >sense< I feel...
Avatar 12:54pm Joe B:

The first imports I saw were hard days night and revolver circa 1978 in junior high, after being immersed in the band for years. that was a mind blower. Kind of like learning radio production in college - everything i know is useless and wrong!
  12:57pm Chris Christie:

Rockin' show, Joe. Just think about the offer is all I ask.
Avatar 12:58pm bibi:

this sounds like chavez.
Avatar 12:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I can see 'The Beatles Second Album' (U.S.) as a uinique 'entity' (for example) - but the U.S. 'Revolver' should have the Butcher Cover - 'cause butcher is what they did to maybe the Best Album Ever...
- Little Steven maintains the U.S. versions of the Stones early albums are deffo the ones - but that may be a limited comparison...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Mike East:

hahaha! what a coincidence...I was just playing the Ringo Starr record that this is on...just bought it last Saturday. Love this version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Mike East:

my daughter thought in "Six o'clock" he was singing: "I don't treat you like a...no I don't treat you like a...I don't treat you like a shoe"
Avatar 1:02pm Joe B:

Hi Mike, goodnight vienna? that is a pretty good one.
Avatar 1:03pm Carmichael:

@Mike: Haven't played that LP in years. Is that the one with Harrison's song Photograph?
  1:05pm brandon:

Was The Last song "I Don't Know What to Say" from an album or a single?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Mike East:

@JoeB - no its on "Ringo"
@Carmichael - yes
Avatar 1:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Beatles For Sale' is the great sorta less-noticed one between films; there were already tendencies towards FolkRawk (which I love) before 'RubberSoul'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm efd:

Today's the official release date of that Split Squad album, fyi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Mike Sin:

re: Beatles vs. Stones early LPs
The Beatles actually had sessions at EMI scheduled for LPs. The LPs were scheduled pretty strictly and the sessions were set.

The Stones, on the other hand, just stockpiled tracks and released them as needed. Up until about "Aftermath," they were recording in four different studios on two different continents. There are no real definitive versions of those early LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Mike East:

@Mike Sin - that's pretty damn interesting. thanks.
Avatar 1:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- nice & concise MikeSin.
  1:16pm ?:

hmm did Arthur Lee cover this?
Avatar 1:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...now - the issue of the Beatles' 9-9-09 Remasters: Is the version we & the World Culture grew up w/ the 'real' version - or the version using 2009 technology to better bring us what the Beatles actually put on tape in Abbey Road Two in hte 1960s - ?? I think they did a hell of a job - definitive Remastering, really - & I'm more than happy w/ it...
Avatar 1:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- what I wish is they would've taken the next step & done 20-bit Mastering to bring us that much closer to Analog-style warmth...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Mike Sin:

RRRNov63 -- None of the 9-9-09 masters try to replicate any issue of the UK LPs and the artifacts associated with them. The engineers expressly stated right at the beginning of the project that they were trying to convey, as transparently as possible, what the master tapes sound like.
  1:21pm geokopp:

You should check out Shameless, Joe, great show.
Avatar 1:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right ! - so what's the 'real' version - ??
Avatar 1:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...a PostModern problem; myself - I'm glad to get my ears as close to the Master Tapes as possible ! - & let History - which can't be changed, only researched & collated - fend for itself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Mike Sin:

Lot 13 in Bayonne -- the joint that hosted the Black Hollies/Overlake/Wax Darts this past Saturday -- is a cool bar. The Dirty Jerz could use some more fun live music spots.
Avatar 1:33pm Joe B:

did you make the black hollies gig Mike?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Mike Sin:

re: Black Hollies' gig
Yes, I was there and had a great time. Nice front room and back room. I spent about 10 minutes reading the entire beer list. Great selection. Best part about hanging in NYC is when you decide to drink out in Jersey, you realize just how cheap it can be in spots.
Avatar 1:37pm Joe B:

efd, thanks for the info! I thought it was out a while ago.
  1:37pm Amanda:

Omg- do you know if there has been any news on White Magic / Mira Billotte?? I love her and haven't heard any info for awhile.
Avatar 1:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- they're both worth watching Joe - & make a great compare/contrast to each other too. I feel that w/ Todd Haynes - we finally have a Filmmaker who understands Rawk.
Avatar 1:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Cate Blanchette as the ModSpeedfreakRockstar Dylan is incredible - haha...
Avatar 1:48pm Joe B:

i didnt like velvet goldmine
Avatar 1:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh okay...a bit much male buggery but that's GlitterRock - my problem not theirs...
Avatar 1:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I do think 'I'm Not There' is better...
Avatar 1:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...another basically flawless playlist this week Joe btw...

  1:57pm funky bill:

  1:58pm John L.:

Customers talking, endlessly, about audiophile stuff, clarity, bringing up Steely Dan and James Taylor as some kinda touchstone for sound. 180 gram vinyl, range of sound, etc. It's giving me a headache. Can you play the best worst recorded record you can think of?

Sure. Hasil Adkins, maybe. Oooh. They stopped.
Avatar 2:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or - we could have Lee Perry pee on the mastertapes...so many possibilities...
Avatar 2:08pm jljl:

efd: are you sure about Split Squad? They gave me a CD back in Aug. and I thought that was "official". Did some label pick it up?

Hello from winter wonderland of LI. We'll see if I make it back
  2:16pm LovecraftDude888:

I just had to do yet another fast supermarket walk--again again again oh nooo! all due to storm. not pleased
  2:16pm LovecraftDude888:

I made it back went up the street, snowing, plows out sort of...everyone on LI is bloody asleep at wheel in brain though. mainly
  2:18pm LovecraftDude888:

I cornered market on Peet's coffee
  2:24pm LovecraftDude888:

something annoying me is that every pro sound place is either in NYC or NJ or whatever...anywhere but LI...which is pissing me off as it always has because I can't commute to a job at one of these places from here. It's bloody aggravating. And I can't stand NYC commutes any longer. Arghhh. Why is Long island such a clusterffffffffkkkkk? It truly is. No culture....nobody wants to open a biz like that here.
No money in it. So sad. man. It's sad. c'mon. Even WFMU is in NJ....good lord.
  2:25pm LovecraftDude888:

sorry Joe..i have to vent sometimes. I love the music!! rockin good news! back to the programme
  2:26pm LovecraftDude888:

I mean...half the worthwhile stuff is in NYC or NJ or anywhere but LI. But if you're Bill O'Reilly in your billion dollar mansion in Montauk..you're keen baby. Wankers!!!
  2:27pm LovecraftDude888:

was reading up on SoundCraft or whatever that mastering place in Freehold NJ. Man. Meanwhile Port Washington...we have a library.....a Stop and Shop. nothing much else. asshole cops

the Surf...oh it's up! way up. the chop out here today should be over the top.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Mike East:

my buddy from montauk brought me a cooler filled with oysters. they were delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mike East:

(does not live in a billion dollar mansion, btw, but a small one bedroom apartment)
  2:30pm LovecraftDude888:

Maybe from Montauk they would be good, fer sure. I never get out that far...ever. The closest was I was in East Hampton for Turkey Day which is a hike and half...such a weird area but I like it more than here,...as long as you have the bucks baby!
  2:31pm LovecraftDude888:

one thing I cannot figure out is, there's a pro DJ shop in Levittown which is where I hail from...i cannot figure out how they do so well here. Guess plenty of NYC DJs live here...or amateurs. cause otherwise..the club heyday of LI was ages ago.
  2:31pm LovecraftDude888:

though there's another one I know of in queens off the LIE service road, so....there are tons of those places around
  2:34pm LovecraftDude888:

I wanna start my own apt. mastering studio called the Scott nonsoundproofed one room Apt. leaky Retarded SoundCrafters Studio To Drive My Neighbors Insane

A little Roky in his voice on this one.
  2:42pm LovecraftDude888:

this sounds great this track. Man i saw Roky four years ago or whatever it was at Southpaw. With Fleshtones opening up. So weird. Weirder than weird.
  2:43pm sissophonic Cheryl:

Go Joe go!
  2:44pm LovecraftDude888:

and then southpaw closed..boohoooo
  2:45pm sissophonic Cheryl:

We also made it to Black Hollies! Mike Sin, did you lay down on top the bar to read that ceiling beer list?
