i came to the realization that an amplifier is an instrument too, and as such, you need to learn to "play it" the same as you'd learn to play your guitar.
anyway, turn your guitar volume right down, then crank your amp full up, and roll the treble back to zero. you'll grok at the tone.

Heh, the cheese guy and DCE's cracker comment reminds me of the time a bunch of celebs discussed an old celeb couple's autobiography, where they talked about how the man would - at parties - put cottage cheese on his penis, place it between two crackers and shout "Hey everyone, I'm f-ing crackers!" The one thing the commenting celebs had to say was how the cottage cheese was completely unnecessary for the joke. I appreciate how they didn't act shocked, but rather just pointed that out.

“Ollie’s music involved many diverse elements. Primarily, perhaps (since this is what first attracted attention), he could play very fast and was the first to discover how to do it. Forget Van Halen, Satriani [and others]; no one has matched his technique. Second, and more importantly, Halsall possessed a melodic sense that transcends any formal analysis. Besides Hendrix, only two others stand in the same league – Richard Thompson and Django Reinhardt.”

LovecraftDude888:

I also found out with guitar amps, even small ones, you can get diff. sounds from different ones sometimes without FX...like the Voxs have a nice grungy fuzz at a certain gain level, even minus a pedal. Things like that. But each one is different for sure. Gotta know what you want out of the amp and any FX, etc. and what guitar you're plugging into it. I like the Fender Mustang I so far cause it's just versatile.

LovecraftDude888:

Steve..right, Gcenter is coming along, I bought most of my lefties there. Or one at Sam Ash which was my Takamine ac.
  4:43pm
LovecraftDude888:

they even had a Taylor baby lefty which I could not believe, but the Takamine was more versatile so...

yeah, i hadnt been to a GC in a while. even more surprising was there not a single analog synthesizer, not even the little cheapo Korg ones and the like.

I hereby resolve to play a lot more than I do now to justify my recent Martin acquisition; she's a gently-used beauty that I found on Ebay (yipes I know but it worked out fine -- sounds and smells awesome!)

(Sorry, can't resist: www.youtube.com... )
  4:44pm
LovecraftDude888:

I went down to GC again 3 weeks ago as I was saying on here to get the Shure 550 headphones....to avoid noise up in this piece..haha.
  4:46pm
LovecraftDude888:

a Martin you cannot go wrong with. I heard guys feuding over those vs. Taylors at GC a few years ago....I think the Martins are just better overall.

a nice smelling guitar IS a bonus. some of them reek of cigarette smoke and puke.

A GC sales manager turned me on to the DRS1 -- I had to get one! And I need to find a lefty pickguard for it, speaking of those...

Yeah, b/tn my profile glitching online, and the customer assistants gave me wrong advice. So, I missed out on 3 weeks of unemployment pay. My old job may come back, but they have gotten the priority assessment from DeBlasio to see whether there will be funding for my project.

NGH oh Lord. wankers!!! total wankery. That sucks man.
thought you wrote customer assailants at first!

It's Sapele wood -- has a lovely scent kind of like clove cigarettes. Open the case and breathe deep!

My 1st guitar cost my mom 3 books of S&H Green Stamps. It ws plastic. The 2nd one was a Sears Silvertone. My brother sat on the neck and broke it.

an ex gf of mine gave me a Hondo nylon string once and it was really wretched

man, was just reading up on what happened with Dave from The Dead Milkmen in 2004...I never heard the whole story...now I did. That's awful, man. I read some of these stories and I'm like....I dunno at least I'm not that bad off.

My first guitar was a Norma acoustic that my great grandma got me for my 9th or 10th birthday back in the good old '70s...got broken somewhere along the line, don't remember when/how...
Avatar 4:53pm
Carmichael:

He he, I had a Hondo once back in the 70s. It was so-so. I do have a Martin and a Taylor, and honestly I prefer the Taylor. The neck is so silky smooth, which makes the action faster for my smallish hands. And it smells great, also. Koa wood ...

@ngh: feel for you. Wrong advice from the customer assistants made me miss 3 months of pay a few years back. Honestly, what's the point of them if they don't know what they're talking about!?!
  4:55pm
LovecraftDude888:

Carm..hrmm haha Hondo..oh no!! I'd rather have an Ishiro Honda. Anyway, yeah Taylors are surely fine guitars, too. I'll take any of 'em.

Wow Kurt, those pumpkin orange guitars were so funky. They've gone beyond dated and back to retro cool. They called them "Pumpkin Jets".

Yeah Glenn, Silvertones came off the same factory line as Kay, Harmony, and I believe Danelectro. Their *body* was just glued wood shavings, like plywood.

Oh no, Glenn. I can play the radio, though!

they were totally made of plywood, but those pups are fantastic.

My first electric: a '65 Fender Mustang with non-original psychedelic Sharpie-on-White finish that I bought in San Diego for $150 in '86. Pawned it for ridiculously-low amount in '93...still kicking myself today. Sole picture that I have of it resides in Martin guitar case.

Yes, people spend good money these days to get their guitars to sound like that.

@Carmichael: Harmony Sovereign made out of plywood too? I saw a nice unstrung one in a guitar shop window in Juneau back in '02-'03, with the pickup built into the bottom of the neck...shop was never open though, so I never got to check it out further.

@Fuzzy: Only the solid body electrics were made out of pressed fiberboard. The acoustics actually had real wood from real trees.
