	🥁 12:11pm Doug Schulkind: When I got to Oberlin in 1979, I signed up to play in the Jazz Band at the school's conservatory. The leader of the band was Candy Johnson, an older tenor sax player who filled in with Ellington and Basie and other bands when they came through the midwest and needed a horn player. (He also played with Lucky Millinder and Tiny Bradshaw and, possibly, a later incarnation of Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy.) Anyway, on the first day of band, Candy tells the band we're going to start off with C-Jam Blues and a trumpeter asked, "what key is it in?" and the withering glare from Johnson was burned into my brain for eternity. So if anyone ever asks, it's in the key of C.

His music is misunderstood as well as for the most part unknown by today's kids who look no further than On the Corner type of acid jazz of the early 70s or funky jazz sampled by the hip hop early 90s generation.

	1:22pm northguineahills: Still not a fan of the Stone. Not b/c of the programming, but b/c of the attempt to force a rarified air of legitimacy in the venue. No food or drink allowed. Everyone must sit down and face the makeshift stage. It seems like they want to be downtown version of Carnegie Hall. At least Tonic allowed culture inside, and the people and music melted together (even if Tonic has a 'real' stage.) I dig serious music, but not when the presentation becomes too serious.

	1:31pm ?: in contrast to the (arguable stuffy) stone, there's an outfit in london - nonclassical - that do live performances of modern/experimental classical works in pubs and clubs....i've thought about this idea for years, glad someone finally took the reigns and made it happen. chatting loudly over a beer with friends or talking on the phone while an ensemble does, say, 2 hours of pierre schaeffer and david tudor? heaven.
