I'm going out for a double espresso, even though coffee-related beverages hate me, as I'm sick of sleeping in 2-3 hour blocks, and want to get back to a regular circadian rhythm.

Afternoon, @Brian in UK. Great to have you here.

Doug Schulkind:

When I got to Oberlin in 1979, I signed up to play in the Jazz Band at the school's conservatory. The leader of the band was Candy Johnson, an older tenor sax player who filled in with Ellington and Basie and other bands when they came through the midwest and needed a horn player. (He also played with Lucky Millinder and Tiny Bradshaw and, possibly, a later incarnation of Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy.) Anyway, on the first day of band, Candy tells the band we're going to start off with C-Jam Blues and a trumpeter asked, "what key is it in?" and the withering glare from Johnson was burned into my brain for eternity.

So if anyone ever asks, it's in the key of C.

Ellington & Coltrane were a snug fit too.
  12:49pm
?:

are you gonna do a best of 2013 show - or have you done one?
  12:52pm
?:

I find Ellington tremendously complicated - he took Jazz into the realms of Black Classical Music.
His music is misunderstood as well as for the most part unknown by today's kids who look no further than On the Corner type of acid jazz of the early 70s or funky jazz sampled by the hip hop early 90s generation.
Avatar 12:58pm
northguineahills:

Classic trio. Glad I saw them around the time this was released.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Jeff Golick:

?: Yes, a 2013 best-of show is in the works -- possibly two! Just trying to get Jeff J. on the air for that.

Ellington = complicated, yes. And his legacy seems to be getting even more tangled with this latest round of critical conversations.

My love for Ellington only expands. And don't EVEN get me started about the miraculous "Money Jungle."

did pia + werner x rename hat hut to hatOLOGY? i been seeing the latter for awhile now, but it must be hat hut, no? or did it get bought our or somethin'? always amazed how great that label was (is?)....
Avatar 1:22pm
northguineahills:

Still not a fan of the Stone. Not b/c of the programming, but b/c of the attempt to force a rarified air of legitimacy in the venue. No food or drink allowed. Everyone must sit down and face the makeshift stage. It seems like they want to be downtown version of Carnegie Hall. At least Tonic allowed culture inside, and the people and music melted together (even if Tonic has a 'real' stage.) I dig serious music, but not when the presentation becomes too serious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Jeff Golick:

@?: the hat label exists as a confusing assortment of different sub-labels and older, discontinued lines. I think -OLOGY is the latest "jazz/imrpov" imprint: www.hathut.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Jeff Golick:

@ngh: I hear you, though haven't had quite the same reaction, seeing it more as an attempt to limit extraneous commerce/commotion. There is indeed a rarefied aspect to it all. Possibly a top-down vibe, as Zorn could certainly be labeled "too serious" from time to time.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Brian in UK:

@ngh I think you would like Cafe Oto in London, cafe in the day and venue at night. No perceptible stage, the music is taken seriously but not to the detriment of a good time.
  1:31pm
?:

in contrast to the (arguable stuffy) stone, there's an outfit in london - nonclassical - that do live performances of modern/experimental classical works in pubs and clubs....i've thought about this idea for years, glad someone finally took the reigns and made it happen. chatting loudly over a beer with friends or talking on the phone while an ensemble does, say, 2 hours of pierre schaeffer and david tudor? heaven.
Avatar 1:32pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, I've read good reviews of shows at Cafe Otto. Looks like the legit place missing in NYC that I so crave since Tonic's departure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Jeff Golick:

@Brian, just from the programming alone, I can see I would find Oto dreamy. Seems (from afar, at least) as something of a ground zero for what's up now.

Yes Doug,
Money Jungle one of my favorits also - can't remember if it was a combination album with Mingus or Coltrane though? Just remember Ellington's deeper and deeper piano notes - everyone else on the album just disappears into insignificance!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

Ellington/Coltrane - that Impulse! record is heavy. Love it so much. I think in Iverson's write-up of the Teachout bio he notes that the omission of this LP from the book is a notable oversight.

Hello, @earrie! Either that, or Mystery Train, I think.
