It's a fungus that grows on corn. In the US, they call it corn smut, and throw it away and think of it as a pest. In Mexico, it's a delicacy (rightfully so). I've only seen it in stores once in Bushwick, and once in East Harlem. I usually have the gf's friends mail cans of it for us.

(Some restaurateurs try to rebrand it as corn truffles)

I need to divide up the playlist comments into separate simultaneous rooms, so that one will always be about food. Or maybe everyone needs to type what they're eating to appear next to their name. (Links to recipes optional.) Gary's show would certainly be aromatic.

@Mike: I'd say it's somewhere b/tn a mild mushroom and a mild a mild mild truffle. Mild flavor is the key b/tn the two. It's usually comes in a semi-liquid form (think a thick chowder w/ mushroomy stuff).

I adore this pat waing drum circle stuff. They tune the drums with some gooey tree residue. I think.

@Holly agree on Julie Sahni. The "Classic Indian Cooking" book is really great

I nicked this amazing record from Bodega Pop ages ago. Here it is: bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Gary:

I found it either in Bronx or East Elmhurst ... I think the latter ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

Haven't shared this one yet -- lots of Tamil stuff I need to upload at some point ...

My mom just wrote me to say i was fading in and out ... anyone having issues with the stream/sound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

Loud and clear, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Doug Schulkind:

Maybe your mother is just a bit light-headed with pride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Gary:

okay, will tell mom to reboot or something ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Gary:

Or maybe she was trying to excuse herself from the farting t.A.T.u synths or whatever this is
Avatar 9:24pm
northguineahills:

Actually. it cut in and out a few times in the last 7 minutes on my side... like now...

Oh yeah, the Leef! I've tried to turn my family on. To him. Not sure if it's took.

LOL, Jessi ... that was my favorite album of 2012, I think.

Perfect sound here in Seattle.

(It sounded quite a bit like the post 3x-dump-button hiccups from Ken's show this morning.)

Jessi:

Sound drops could be due to local wifi interference, if any of you are streaming the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Gary:

Yeah, I had Nicecast hidden behind Audacity, so I couldn't see it ... front & center now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Doug Schulkind:

The sound did drop out, briefly, three times during the Abu El Leef.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Gary:

Bummer -- poor Mr. Leef!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Doug Schulkind:

Guess you have to turn over a new Leef, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Gary:

This album has the grooviest cover. I need to reup it, though:bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Gary:

And, yes, I totally bought it based on the cover, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

You DID reup it, Gary! The link works.

dropped again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Gary:

This is a recent find, right off Broadway in Astoria, on like 36 Street or thereabouts. This guy's from Spain, I think, and I'm pretty sure he's channeling Beck. Weird about the stream -- Nicecast shows a clear signal ... :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Doug Schulkind:

Nothing dropped here. Hey NGH, are you listening to via MP3 stream or the pop-up player?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Gary:

I sure wish I understood Spanish, right about now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Gary:

Two more songs after Senor Sabina is through. Will probably be like 3 minutes shy of 10 PM

I have to use my brain to understand espanol, and when I do, 90% of the time, the lyrics are as vacuous as American pop. My Mexi gf agrees.

Bravo! A true combined multi-cultural and spiritual experience
Also a therapeutic break from the realities of our political climate and the thugs in the White House who inflect our society and culture with their bigotry hatred and vindictiveness
