And hi, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
Hope you have some Q-Tips handy!

@kat330
Today's show will fit like a Snuggie®!
Avatar 8:57am kat330:

Swivel those hips and drum a little some, Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

I've got a litre of 10W-40 right here to keep Fred swiveling for the next three hours.
Avatar 9:00am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar 9:00am kat330:

I'm sure I'll be noting how often he's in time with whatever's playing. Speaking of which, how perfect to catch up on so much missed at this time this past year.

Hey, Bob!
Avatar 9:01am ndbob:

Heya kat!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hey davex! Always great to see you here!
Avatar 9:12am kat330:

Appreciate your minimalist avatar, davex, not least because that's about my absolute favorite color.

Thanks Doug!
Avatar 🥁 9:13am duke:

Good morning Drummer types
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am davex:

And thanks kat - I guess I must like it too!
Avatar 🥁 9:15am duke:

It looks like a young Doug is getting his first drum lesson in the gif
Avatar 9:15am kat330:

If you mix the Little Dutch Boy paint logo with the Quaker Oats logo, do you get Holland Oats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

You can tell by the drool, eh duke?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am holland oats:

so fred astaire was metal, who knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am holland oats:

@kat i can go for that
Avatar 9:20am kat330:

What film is this .gif from, Doug? I *should* know. Hm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
The actor originally given the role of The Tin Man: Buddy Ebsen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Gary:

I'm going to guess Singin in the Rain
Avatar 9:21am kat330:

Yep, he was allergic to the makeup and had to bow out.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:21am Brian in UK:

G'day Mr Schulkind & devotees. Lovin' the pink drums. Ooooh yeah.
Avatar 9:22am Shaun:

Traditional grip. Fred was a jazzer. Happy Christmas, Doug and all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22am Artie:

Blessedly joining from the kitchen table this AM. Howdy, Drummers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23am Brian in UK:

@holland oats. Your Abandoned Luncheonette was the first I bought of yours, still sounds good.
Avatar 9:23am kat330:

@Gary: Nah, not Fred's film and this is set either early 20th or late 19th c. Easter Parade?
  9:24am lucy in brooklyn:

signing in from brooklyn... happy to have your company while I work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Hallo, Brian in UK. It wouldn't be a party withoutcha!

@kat330
The film is "Easter Parade"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Shaun! Ho Artie!
Avatar 9:25am kat330:

Guess no need for WD-40 with Greasy Drums.

Whee! What do I win?
Avatar 9:26am ndbob:

I need to go out for a bit - I will be back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Greasy330!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Door's unlocked, ndbob.
Avatar 9:28am kat330:

Hey, I was no HS greaser. My hair was already too thick for back-combing / ratting.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:29am listener james from westwood:

my hair was more moe howard than arthur fonzarelli in grammar school. then in high school i went for the dan ackroyd in "ghostbusters" blowback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

My hair was large and in charge.
Avatar 9:31am kat330:

It was always a cultural point of interest in the girl's lavatory, though, watching the greaser gals ratting their hair and popping their gum. :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31am Brian in UK:

Hey Doug, have you seen the film 'Muscle Shoals' yet? Thought it was a bit pastiche in places but there is no way to forget the sounds that eminated from Florence.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:32am Brian in UK:

My hair was all my own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Brian, I haven't yet seen the movie. Would love to, though I could do without the absurd inclusion (apparently) of Bono as a talking head in the film.
Avatar 9:32am kat330:

Hey, Doug, your star-click system doesn't seem to be working, for me anyway. I've clicked and reclicked and reclicked a track, but it keeps unclicking itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

Yikes, kat330! Don't know what to say. Anyone else having that problem?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:34am Brian in UK:

He is a prat. We could say what he says and better. That's what I mean by pastiche some of it looks a bit duff.
Avatar 🥁 9:34am duke:

I had long hair in HS. Wish I had saved it. I could glue it on top now where I need it.
Avatar 9:35am kat330:

Yeah, I believe Kermode said as much about Bono in his review of it a bit ago.
Avatar 🥁 9:35am duke:

clicky thing seems to be working for me right now
Avatar 9:36am kat330:

@duke: I had long hair in HS and still have long hair.

Try refreshing the page and see if the star sticks, Duke.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am listener james from westwood:

i checked my profile page after starring a track. it's listed among my faves, but the star isn't "lit." perhaps yours did in fact make it into your list?
Avatar 9:39am kat330:

I just timed it: about 15 seconds after I click Dan Penn's track, the star unclicks itself automatically, no need even to refresh to have it happen. Weird.
Avatar 🥁 9:39am duke:

@kat330 star is highlighted after refresh. Maybe browser differences?
Avatar 9:42am kat330:

@James: Yep, made it to the list and, right, the star's unlit and simply refuses to stay lit. Oh well, guess Dan IS losing his good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Gary:

Loving the Ichimaru
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Uncle Michael:

Hairy Morgen, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Am not surprised by that, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Gary:

Just googled the comp it came from -- looks awesome! canary-records.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Loved him in "M.A.S.H.," Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Forget this show, I'm just gonna go over to Uncle Michael's playlist page and stare at it for the next 130 minutes: wfmu.org...
Avatar 🥁 9:52am duke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Well, Uncle Michael, I believe your playlist has eaten my audience. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Avatar 9:54am Shaun:

Great when tracks you starred before pop up in this best of. Like a fist-bump, Doug.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:55am listener james from westwood:

decaf coffee and poppy seed bagel are ready to roll!! if i could, i'd give the drummer some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
That's the good news. The bad news is you're driving a backhoe.

@Shaun
Your one great mind thinks alike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Stanley:

Hello Doug. Good listening, as usual.
Sounds like a real party going on here in Southeast Congo.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:55am Brian in UK:

Well that's what I call RELENTLESS.
Avatar 9:55am kat330:

These guys are sure working the audience! :)

Perfect music whilst watching the Fred Astaire clip!
  9:58am marcury:

Love the Fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Hello jill! Love to you and your shimmering fambly.

@Stanley
At first read, I thought YOU were at a party in SE Congo. Then I figured it out. (Unless you are listening to this whilst partying in Kinshasa, of course.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:58am Brian in UK:

Hello Stanley, well some of us have been to work today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Jeebus! Fred Astaire's knees are now knocking in time with the music. Anyone else got that?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Stanley:

@Brian - Ha! Its a rare Friday, I'm not at the office. And to celebrate I haven't bothered to get dressed yet (its 3pm - yeah!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am listener james from westwood:

oh, fred knows what the rhythm is. he knows.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:04am Brian in UK:

Stanley not again you wearing a nonsie just like the drummer.
Avatar 10:05am kat330:

No need for onesies or nonsies since, as Doug notes at the top, this show fits like a Snuggie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Stanley:

I'm wearing skin, what more do ya want!
  10:08am marcury:

Yusef!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

I think January will be kind of Month of Yusef on GTDS.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am Brian in UK:

Ectoplasm at least.
  10:13am marcury:

Thought of you immediately when I got the news
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Uncle Michael:

Express Yusef, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks marcury. Received warm condolences from many.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16am listener james from westwood:

marcury, so did i.
i think a january yusef month would be altogether fitting. witness trouble's month of lonnie holley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter just asked if I would drive her to the arts supply store. I guess she usually not home on Friday mornings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Trouble played an hour of spectacular Yusef songs this week.
Avatar 10:17am kat330:

  10:21am marcury:

Listener James, great idea.

Great segue Doug
  10:23am marcury:

Doug, get Lincoln something at the art supply from me, I'll send a check!
Avatar 10:23am kat330:

Would make more sense if there wasn't a comma in this title.
Avatar 10:25am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Hey everyone, if DJ Monica shows up here on the comments, wish her a happy birthday!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Uncle Michael:

Happy birthday, DJ Monica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Stanley:

Is this Manu Chao?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

No Stanley, but that could make a killer segue. This is from Nigeria.
Avatar 10:36am still b/p:

Good morning.

Catch-up trivia: Gene Kelly was going play the lead in Easter Parade, but he bust his ol' ankle, so Fred came out of one his multiple retirements to do it.

I'm going to see the Muscle Shoals picture tonight.

That set ender was a nice 2013 item from Nigeria. I saw great 500 year old items from Nigeria yesterday.
Avatar 10:37am jk:

not scientific?!?!???!!! I'm outta here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for tying it all together, still b/p!

Back with a snack of pistachios and a clementine.
Hey, still b/p, long time no see!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

If it was a blood orange, kat330, I would dash over to share.
Avatar 10:42am kat330:

Dash over? Didn't realize you had a private jet! But there are plenty of goodies here to share all right.
Avatar 10:44am kat330:

Fred is liking this Fred.
Avatar 10:44am earrie:

Clementine and coffee, here. Bitter and sweet.
And a final batch of scones just went in the oven (ginger-blueberry). It's rhythmic-baking?
Avatar 10:44am still b/p:

Hiya, kat.
I slept so damn long time late I almost didn't see or hear none of this show! Maybe it was the crash after the holiday binge of sweets + sweets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

earrie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

One more song and this show is Finnish!

Doug, Are you Finnishing early?
Avatar 10:49am kat330:

I'll get Philo to translate for me later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Exactly, duke! The show is usually sweetish until it is Finnish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

I have always been a sucker for albums with the phrase "Skeletal Essences" in their subtitle.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am listener james from westwood:

y'all are gonna send me out for danish in a minute.
Avatar 10:51am kat330:

Speaking of Swedish, we watched a fine film on the 24th -- The Phantom Carriage, a Swedish silent film that was a big influence on Ingmar Bergman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

I just heard that Nick Barbery, the fellow behind the Ghostcapital blog had his laptop stolen last night. There is a GoFundMe page set up for him: www.gofundme.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Gary:

Great, now I need to get a Lapptop to listen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

I guess he can a fjord to swim a while longer?
Avatar 10:55am kat330:

Guess I really will need Philo's help. Neither artist nor title translate on Google to anything.
Avatar 10:57am kat330:

Some of the instruments on this sound like the little horns we bought at the Dollar Store and played on my Celebration: New Year's track (yes, featuring Philo on toy horn ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Gary:

Whoa, awful news about Nick. (I made my lapptop joke before reading that, ugh.)
Avatar 11:00am kat330:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Three cheers to Josh at Tompkins Square Records for helping to bring Peter Walker back into the light.
Avatar 11:03am kat330:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Peter was with Karen Dalton when she died. She was living her last days in his home in Woodstock, NY.
Avatar 11:04am earrie:

Three cheers to Josh -- yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Three cheers to Josh for continuing to be nice to me even after I spelled his record label "Thompkins" Square on many playlists. Whoops!
Avatar 11:06am kat330:

I'm wondering how this Snake Charmer would mash up with Pen-No-Re (if I'm recalling the right match -- otherwise the board goes back).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:08am Brian in UK:

@earrie ever tried cheese scones - great with soup.
Avatar 11:09am earrie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
I think I jumped the gun on that Johnson playlist entry. Sorry for misleading you.
Avatar 11:23am kat330:

And you tipped your hand with the Hubbels, too. ;)
Avatar 11:24am kat330:

@Doug: And at least the seamless segue is explained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Uncle Michael:

I was channeling Doug when I played that song a week ago and I didn't know it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Yup, I guess I had an itchy trigger finger on the playlist. Oh well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33am Brian in UK:

@kat not really, the idea is to make something that I do not care much for to improve cooking skills. I prefer savoury to sweet as a rule. Plus I have been hassled by folks at work for more gooey products.

Now you are talking retro with those products. Chesterfield has a church with a bent spire.
Avatar 11:33am Carmichael:

With the harp background, crossing over into the light has a different connotation.

This is from the divine Laura Veirs' new record. Elsewhere on the record she has a song that pays tribute in name to Alice Coltrane, but I think this song is even more of a tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

And by divine, I don't mean Harris Glenn Milstead.
Avatar 11:38am ndbob:

great one here Doug!

Advocaat + lemonade = snowball.

As 'a younger man' I used to whip up an egg and brandy flip for breakfast. Followed quickly by a bottle of beer. Great for breakfast.

Avatar 11:39am kat330:

@Stanley & Brian: Well, this Chesterfield / Sheffield dude IS into very retro things. He's fixated on all things of the '80s.
Avatar 11:40am kat330:

Thanks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am Brian in UK:

@kat One speciality in Chesterfield are huge Yorkshire puddings with fillings or just filled with gravy.

Stanley, never touched one myself.

Hiya Jeff #1!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Uncle Michael:

THIS IS NUTS! I like it.
Avatar 11:44am kat330:

How did your pudding ice cream turn out, btw? He mentioned putting mincemeat pies into the oven on Christmas Eve. But he loves '80s music (the collab I'm doing with him) and film and tv.
Avatar 11:46am kat330:

[Actually, just mince pies, no meat mentioned on a reread.]
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

@kat During this programme the receipe for egg nog is divulged.

Avatar 11:51am kat330:

@kat330 - those drinks, are definitely sixties favourites. The pangalactic gargleblaster was the drink of the eighties for me.
