Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've never messed with the tonearm balance/counterweight thingie. The Sony direct-drive I've got now is a reconditioned model, so in theory it should be a'ight... but..... fear...

it does sound so good like this

Hey RTD, don't let the turntable arm scare ya. About a gram and a half, give or take. And make sure the anti-skating is set to the same number.

@Mike: bleedover from Bryce comment board. Cross contamination, as it were...
Avatar 3:39pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

After moving to Tucson in the '90s, I discovered what the dry climate can mean for belt-drive turntables. The belts turned to friggin' dust! Happy to be back home in the moist east now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Mike East:

aha - I missed it today. my cartridge tells me 2.5 grams on the counter balance...I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Moist East:

Glad to have you back, Rev.
Avatar 3:44pm
Carmichael:

I think that's the max, Mike, at least for my Technics SL-Q3. I think I set mine at 1.6g, but it could vary by mfgr. I can't remember my needle mfgr, but it's elliptical and has less drag and more groove accuracy than a conical version.

I missed the convo too, so I may be repeating some info from earlier.
Avatar 3:47pm
steve:

Rev - did you have tons of static cling on your table as well when you were in the heat? my tables are right next to a heating pipe and in winter its basically a van der graaf generator if i don't turn on the humidifier
Avatar 3:50pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I don't remember static issues, Steve. I moved back east in 2001 so it's been a while, memory is in tatters. Mostly I just remember having to replace belts twice due to them drying up & cracking off...
Avatar 3:52pm
steve:

that is so nutty. i can only imagine what what would happen to cassettes.
Avatar 3:57pm
Mark Helsten:

Need to set your cartridge to within the specs the manufacturer suggests! they are all designed differently... 1.5 - 2 g is pretty common.
Avatar 3:58pm
glenn:

how many pennies in 1.5 grams?
Avatar 3:59pm
fleep:

Penny = 2.5 grams www.usmint.gov...
Avatar 4:01pm

we don't even make them any more. they figured every penny cost about 3.5 cents to make.

glenn, the cleaning guy copped to it. He was cleaning out the fridge and forgot to put it back. He said he'll buy me lunch, but I'd like him to make me lunch with the same amount of love I put into that paprikash, damnit.

Avatar 4:27pm
Cheri Pi:

Long overdue response to RTD- Rev, my tonearm is old skool-no thingy that keeps it in place so if someone, aka MR Cheri Pi knocks it out of whack with his clumsy hands then I have to zero the whole thing and rebalance. It's easy now that I've done it a thousand times. still a pain in the ass tho
Avatar 4:28pm
kat330:

Ha, yeah, I'm sure that doesn't hurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm

Glenn, whilst I appreciate the drone, I have a soft spot for the uilleann pipes. They're not tempered, and you get an upper-body workout, as opposed to a cardiovascular one.
