Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 13, 2013 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Mike East - Also a teenage hobby of Negativland's "The Weatherman" -- he's played some of those tapes on his for-realsies radio appearances.

our radio station was W-SMELLY-J, which I think was a takeoff of WPLJ, which my parents listened to, combined with toilet humor, which was very funny to me at the time.

Norman cooked a mighty fine hot dog after the money went away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm

He did?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm

doesn't the money still come in when SITS gets licensed (fairly often I've noticed)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
pacific standard simon:

He bought a chicken farm in Petaluma, went through a bad divorce, and grilled weenies at Jerome's Good Dogs in Cotati, CA in the mid 70s. I ate there often. This was before every goddam movie wanted the rights to "Spirit".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Uncle Michael:

There was probably a period of years between the hit and the licensing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm guessing not a lot of people have heard this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
G:

If Norman pens (sorry, keys) a memoir, perhaps one chapter will be titled "My Weenie Era"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm

I don't even get the joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
pacific standard simon:

What, you ignore the Sparks bait, but you chime in for Greenbaum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm

ha! I was too busy when Sparks came on to chime in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah man...what's the DEAL?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
efd:

"Canned Ham" was Norman Greenbaum's second-highest charting single (I think). It's on the b-side of my copy of "Spirit In The Sky" but I think that copy was a later issue, with "back to back hits."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
pacific standard simon:

How about a "Canned Ham", Canned Heat, and Ege Bamyasi triple play?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm

The flavor secret of the great dogs is they were made with all the Canned Ham Norm had on hand that never sold.

Ed in Scotchland:

As an extremely infrequent listener of GTDR (and I'm enjoying this show immensely, by the by,) I'd like to know, is the station as a whole best described as 'WFMU 2', or is there some sort of overriding musical concept which drives GTDR, which is distinct from WFMU itself?
Avatar 2:43pm
teeter tot:

Yes Hyde, I was on my way to the archive and you wouldn't believe how my eyes lit up in amazement at my good fortune to discover the live feed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Uncle Michael:

Ed, I'd say that in principle it is not distinct, musically...since as with all shows on WFMU's terrestrial signal, GTDR DJs play whatever they feel moved to play.
Avatar 2:44pm
hyde:

@Ed i think of it as sort of a parallel Doug Schulkind multiverse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm glad you're enjoying the show, Ed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Andrew Waterloo:

GTDR and the other streams are different in the sense that they have a more consistent 24hr cycle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
pacific standard simon:

One distinction is that the GTDR stream is open to DJs who do not live in the WFMU broadcast area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Uncle Michael:

And we don't have to please the FCC with legal IDs and clean language.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
listener james from westwood:

@ed: plus a couple of WFMU 2 DJs are former on-air DJs, so there's some overlap there, too. about the only difference i can think of is that there are no fcc restrictions on language or content here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
listener james from westwood:

heh, UM, you beat me to it!
