george barnes does the best version of the clarinet polka. just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
PGB:

I'll definitely check it out. I've got a stealth polka planned for later...

it's hard to find, but it's on this mixcloud thingy.

"Knowing" is a record fair find from last week.

CDToaster:

Hi PGB, thanks for your email reminder that you will be filling in today. Happy to be able to celebrate with you and the rest of the gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
PGB:

@CDToaster. Welcome aboard! This song is pretty celebratory, no? (Sometimes woozy, too.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
fred:

@PGB: celebratory often ends up woozy. Maybe that says more about me than about the words though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
PGB:

Good point. I'm glad only CD player #2 is woozy here in Studio A. Full steam ahead!
Avatar 3:46pm
glenn:

i always thought player #2 was wonky. i must be out of the loop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
PGB:

Historical wonkiness + misadventure on Saturday when it swallowed a disc and wouldn't give it back.
Avatar 3:53pm
CDToaster:

That's when it becomes time to whip out the screwdriver and open 'er up. Drink a beer beforehand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
PGB:

The odd thing is that it took the CD and squirreled it away. You could play another CD even with the swallowed CD somewhere inside. Play anything on that? No thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
fred:

If it swallows a Don McLean CD but plays a Poco CD without a glitch, you can sell it to Andy for a lot of money
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
PGB:

Those Don McLean stories are delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
fred:

Totally unrelated, but I just got this in my mailbox: groupeaa.limsi.fr...
Its in french, but it's samples of text-to-speech synthesis dating back to 1968. Kenny G. would probably know what to do with this crap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
PGB:

I'm definitely going to give that a listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
fred:

I just sent an email to my lab saying they were not in it. So there might be more, if you like that kind of thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
fred:

And let me know if you need some translation beyond what google can provide
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
PGB:

At its best when it traverses the uncanny divide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
fred:

Man, speech is tough. The uncanny (especially visuals) is such a great way to distract people from the fact that synthesis sounds like shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
PGB:

Oh yeah. I like those experiments where they show someone saying one thing on video, but there's something different on the audio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- McGurk effect ! :

en.wikipedia.org...

www.youtube.com...
  4:27pm
Kathy:

this is too cool~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like - the visual is someone saying 'ba'
- the audio is 'da'
- & the brain splits the difference & you'd swear it's 'ga'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
fred:

That makes sense, visual cues often tell the truth about spoken lies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- More precisely :
...'As an example, the syllable /ba-ba/ is spoken over the lip movements of /ga-ga/, and the perception is of /da-da/'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
fred:

@RRN63: it's really much murkier than that. The lips are only part of it, you have different sounds in different languages because of what's going on in the throat or with the tongue, though the lips are in the same position. The hints you get from the lips depend on the language you're speaking. I'm getting boring there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
PGB:

It's those darn voiced/unvoiced consonants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- so maybe people whose brains are wired for dif. phonemes because of lang./culture might 'hear' a dif. sound in the McGurk experiment?? I should read the wiki...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
fred:

I'm not sure the wiki would tell, I work in a lab that deals with these things, and that's a research topic, meaning nobody knows for sure. The accepted truth just seems... well.. false.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...which reminds me of 'This is Your Brain on Music' by Daniel Levitin - just on the subject of the brain & 'hearing' generally - & which every Music obsessive should read...
Avatar 4:55pm
glenn:

ha! apparently the dead played silver threads and golden needles from time to time. bob weir sang the lead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
fred:

Wanda Jackson! Heard that before alright, but I certainly don't mind hearing that again. Quite the opposite, it's a cure for jaded minds. Dolly Parton can work too, but Wanda's better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
PGB:

Sounds like a great idea for a future set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wanda's just one of those singers w/ - how would you say it - authority? She's convincing? She's definitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
fred:

@RRN63: She's here. Immediate. She's breaking through that fourth wall and in your face or in your lap, your choice of avoidance. But she's there. You can't avoid that. I let her in my head.
  5:05pm
JakeGould:

Signed in explicitly to thank you for the polka tune. Very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
PGB:

...if you liked that, then stick around for the end of the show (or catch it on the archive). Start with a polka, end with a polka.
  5:10pm
JakeGould:

Start with polka, but end with polka? Why not just make it all polka? Okay, I get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
PGB:

Long ago, a DJ threatened to do just that. The next week, she pretended to be a fill-in, and played polkas for three hours. Legendary.
  5:14pm
JakeGould:

Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
fred:

Legendary? It's not legend, legend is something you don't believe. This probably really happened. I heard Ken's recent Bohemian Rhapsody marathon. I listened live to many Kenny G shows people would rank less likely than a Bigfoot sighting. WFMU is a legend generator. WFMU is stranger than fiction because fiction has to make sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
PGB:

You're right...I was there. But I guess it's a legend for those who didn't experience it firsthand. Our testimony is all they have!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Ike:

Beautiful summation, Fred.
  5:28pm
JakeGould:

It’s a legend because I didn’t experience it. Wonder if there are pirate polka stations in Greenpoint?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
fred:

I blew it. I should have kept it for marathon time. It might have been worth a few bucks then.
Failure of Summation, fitting for a Fabio fill-in
Avatar 5:32pm
glenn:

or as archie bunker called it - greenpernt.
  5:33pm
JakeGould:

Archie Bunker would fit in well in Greenpoint.
  5:35pm
JakeGould:

Okay, Keren Ann is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
PGB:

I knew I had to hurry up in order to fit in this slow song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
fred:

you made it

I saw the Girl From Greenwich Village yesterday. She was on her way to Williamsburg.

Well said fred! Nothing is real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm

Nothing to get hung about.
Avatar 5:55pm

PJ O'Connell sounds pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
PGB:

I had to end the show with this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am

Finally got to hear the archive. Good job PGB!
