A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

...since I was born 3rdNov'63 & will always share the JFK anniversary - almost exactly when the term 'Beatlemania' was coined, less than a day before Lennon told the Queen (or it might have been Queen Mother) to 'Rattle Her Jewelry'. Right then too - Pres. Ngô Đình Diệm was assassinated in Vietnam
- which points up the CIAs involvement (he had spurred those famous Buddhist self-immolation protests:www.onthisdeity.com...–-the-revolutionary-suicide-of-thich-quang-duc/) - & lead to the Vietnam Conflict for us...
- & then 19 days after my birth JFK was assassinated, C.S. Lewis died, Aldous Huxley died of cancer choosing to go on a big dose of LSD - 'With the Beatles' was released, & the 1st thing on the BBC after JFK coverage was the debut of Dr. Who, 'An Unearthly Child'.

@RRN63: yes, I was thinking about this version too, it's been a while I think Bonnie Prince Billy usually takes the edge out of some superb songs in favor of some kind of kidding or joke approach to them. Earlier I used to like his cover versions more, but anyway, it's Will Oldham and I pledged alliance to his music 'till the end of my days.

Just found this on the Cornell site: "Though there are still several million migratory Canada Geese, for a period at the end of the nineteenth century they became scarce. (Overhunting, egg collecting, and development of wetlands were among the causes of the decline.) In the 1930s, efforts to restore their numbers led to government-sponsored releases of resident “giant” Canada Geese for hunting. Not long after, as lawns started to proliferate, many of these resident geese flocks began to thrive and expand their range. Though resident and migratory geese may mingle during winter, they retain separate breeding ranges and do not typically interbreed.

Now, even with hunting pressure to the tune of 3.2 million geese per year in North America, the resident population continues to grow. These hunting numbers combine migratory and resident birds—it’s often hard to separate them out on their wintering grounds. But most biologists believe there are far too many resident geese—more than can be sustained in urban-suburban areas."

My Canada geese appreciation comes from seeing them in the woodlands and wetlands of the midwest (mainly when I lived in Michigan). Especially in the fall, it was great going for walks in the woods to sizable ponds and lakes and seeing tons of ducks and geese hanging out. It was also an impressive sight catching huge flocks of migrating Canada geese. I guess urban geese have never been a problem wherever I've lived.

We have turkey at thanksgiving in commemoration of the first Pilgrim harvest feast with native Americans. Accounts of that time, though, only mention that the natives brought birds to the meal. Given that turkeys are difficult to hunt, and geese are plentiful at harvest time, the fowl of choice was more likely geese. We should be out harvesting them each November.

@cecile, ordinarily that's the case. Fortunately, the mayor has been quite successful in bringing a breath of fresh air to the city. The previous mayor was quite stodgy, a former cop (who started in the 1960s before schools and dorms were integrated in this town) and ran thing in the back slapping old boys way. A lot of folks are really happy with the current mayor.
