Live performance by Mamadou Kelly, recorded live at Lincoln Center in the Caravan for Peace concert, July 31, 2013.

Employing a nimble, melodic guitar technique and a soulful, bluesy voice, Mamadou Kelly made a name for himself playing with greats like the late Malian blues legend Ali Farka Toure. Kelly fled his home town of Niafunke for Bamako after the occupation of northern Mali in 2012 when the imposition of sharia law banned music there. Not to be stopped, he continued to hone his solo career and just released a new album in September, which more than hints at his encyclopedic knowledge of Malian music. Last summer Mamadou was a part of the Caravan for Peace concert outdoors at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, and WFMU was fortunate to be allowed to record the whole concert. Mamadou Kelly's live set aired on Irene's show.

Hiya, Irene. Good afternoon, and it is getting better every minute with this Pat Metheny. Thanks for that.

Hey everybody! Just getting around to commenting myself. A head's up to you French speakers-- Mamadou Kelly talks before each song in French, and I am sadly not able to translate. If any of you wants to paraphrase in the comments, I'd appreciate it.

hello mrs. trudel and trudelites, just checkin' in to say i'm feeling much better since you're on the air, and that i also love malian music.

Juurakkotukka:

Hey again Irene and the others! Autumn evenings are dark here in Finland. I sat in a train from Helsinki to Turku. Your music blends in beautifully with the lights of the small towns passin by.

Ike:

Not to mention, if there are any French speakers listening in mid-Brooklyn, esp. Flatbush, pls tune into the scumbag Haitian pirate at 90.9 FM that interferes with FMU and take down all possible identifying information, like any phone numbers they give out or info from ads, and then send it in to the FCC. They were putting out a strong signal Sat. night even to Borough Park; heard it as far away as the freaking Verrazano.

BTW, this is Irene's last chance to meet her goal during the drive. It is definitely within reach within these next two hours. She is not supposed to speak of the Silent Pledge, but we can. So if you like Irene, if you love the station, now is the time to show it.
Avatar 1:15pm
Snortley:

@Ike - The guy apparently responsible for that Creole station, Jean Idalbert, has already been warned once and and fined $10,000 by the FCC. Probably hasn't paid it, and just goes on broadcasting, and the FCC does nothing about it. Evidently, their role is to demonstrate by inaction that they actually approve and endorse such pollution of the airwaves.

Very happy to be here. We'll continue in theme of the north of Mali. The blues of the north.

My French is pretty rusty, was listening whilst cycling home and picked up a bit, will have a go when Mamadou next talks
Avatar 1:24pm
Snortley:

Actually, under a recently passed NY law, he could be charged with a felony and spend time upstate at taxpayer expense. Unfortunately, the police can't be bothered; too busy chasing down pot smokers of a darker complexion.

Irene Trudel:

Hey Sem Chumbo, Sean, DCE, common, doca, mythopeic_industries, Van, Yeti Bob, Juurakkotukka, Ike and KP! glad to have you here on this beautiful autumnal day. @Ike and @Snortley, It's almost impossible to take a radio pirate down. But keep trying on WFMU's behalf.

Hey, also big thanks to those of you still pledging to WFMU's silent fundraiser! I have passed to 50% mark thanks to the generosity of Andrew, Bill and Kevin, and the cow is now mooing at the top of the page. If I can get a few more pledges the dog's tail will wag and I will have reached my show goal. Hope to do it today if possible.

@Snortley, do we know the police definitely can't be bothered? Maybe someone with police connections can press for an investigation? If repeated violations are a felony under state law, that has to count for something...?

Ike - Maybe writing council members could help. It's hard to say. Prosecution is discretionary; if all the rules were enforced, half the population would be in jail.
