- It is one of the two days a year Day & Night are Equal Length (Equi-Nox) - the other being beginning of Spring (Vernal Equinox). The Solstices (Sol-Stice = 'Sun Stands Still') mark the beginning of Summer - Longest Day - & the beginning of Winter - the Shortest Day (just before Xmas).
