Whose record collection was on the cover of the "Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes" 45? Did you have a pretentious asshole record collector in mind? Did you ever play outside the West Coast? I don't remember you guys making it to Detroit back in the day.

	12:19pm Rich in Washington: Poison Idea's Tom did a helluva radio show in the mid-80s on KBOO. Not sure if it was a regular show or if he just guested on someone else's show but it was fantastic. Maybe Jerry remembers something about it. I still have a bunch of cassettes of it.

	12:21pm Cecile: More and more I'm getting the feeling that the old HC bands are getting the treatment the hippies gave the old bluesmen. Except the bands obviously have more control over the output. it's kind of weird.

Punk once meant Pere Ubu, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, Sex Pistols... etc, etc, etc. The mark keeps moving.

I also can't fathom the style of music now called Hardcore - that screechy screamo music. It's silly. It's the howl of some kid who got a Jetta for graduation instead of the Audi they asked for.

	12:34pm Stevel: Reading "From the Velvets to the Voidoids by Clinton Heylin (Thanks to someone on this board, I believe.) Fascinating how what became "Punk" came from bands/non bands moving as far away from accepted genres and performance norms as possible. Long, endless jams and other often tedious exercises made up the foundation.
	12:34pm InBrkly: @JimDevoid: I was going to ask the same question about 924 Gilman back in 89. Everclear and a lighter nearly brought the place down. People threw wet tshirts at the rafters.

	12:38pm Rich in Washington: I remember seeing PI for the first time and was stunned by how not punk Pig/Tom looked and what a kick-ass guitar player he was live.

	12:40pm Cecile: Many of these I played on air back in the day. Of course mixed up withe everything else you could imagine.
	12:40pm Stevel: Rich in Washington: Many best music memories for me were encountering bands who did not 'look' like they were 'supposed to'. Even though I was raised on Glam, I loved the way people fucked with or ignored image.

	12:40pm Cecile: Rich, some of the toughest bands back in the day looked completely normal. It was kinda funny.

	12:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid: Yep, this old fart is transformed. Quite a time machine, this set. All it's missing is the crunchy drop-out of old cassette compilations that have been eaten by cheap boom-boxes too often.
	12:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid: Jim: That's my issue exactly. And the food truck of choice is just 2 blocks away. Arms too short. Stupid arms.
	12:42pm Rich in Washington: @Cecile: I remember lots of cool kids at punk shows who just had their own look and not the stereotypical punk look until around '83 or so and then everyone started looking the same. Seems like girls stopped showing up unless they were someone's girlfriend, too.

	12:45pm Cecile: it's like the punk rulebook got codified and then it was all non-punk influences, women and gays get out. My friend disagrees, but he was in Madison where it was more politically conscious. In Detroit, that's what happened.
	12:45pm fred: Maybe we old farts need a manifesto, something we can defend from these youngsters. Woolf penned "a room of one's own", who will dare to write "a lawn of one's own", just so that we can scream at those damn kids to get off it
	12:46pm Cecile: People like the Necros, John Brannon, Die Kreuzen moved out of that pretty damn fast when it got that way.
	12:47pm Cecile: not for every show. A lot of the SST bands drew a varied crowd.
	12:48pm Cecile: And the Grumpy's 13 show was great because the girls that came with their boyfriends were probably the girls who went to HC shows solo in the 80s.
	12:49pm Cecile: Not girls, good Lord. The women.
	12:49pm Stevel: Madison was interesting, and a bit mellower than other areas. Not very likely to get hurt at a show, unless you were looking for it. Girls weren't a complete rarity, but, the slam-dance floor was very much a place for adolescent male energy. There were definitely girls who held their own.
	12:53pm Cecile: Yeah. I think a lot of girls and short guys got turned off by the pit. I know I did. But standing back further ended up being better because you could actually watch the band.

	2:35pm fred: @RTD: I came to HW through Moorcock, they outlasted my interest in his books. Unfortunately, I expect that range to inflate to around €50, that's usually the rate around here. I'll keep an eye out in case of a good surprise. Though I'll be spending next Saturday on a 9-hours Zorn-fest, I will probably regret those euros when they're gone

	12:19pm Rich in Washington: Poison Idea's Tom did a helluva radio show in the mid-80s on KBOO. Not sure if it was a regular show or if he just guested on someone else's show but it was fantastic. Maybe Jerry remembers something about it. I still have a bunch of cassettes of it.

Fascinating how what became "Punk" came from bands/non bands moving as far away from accepted genres and performance norms as possible. Long, endless jams and other often tedious exercises made up the foundation.

	12:45pm Cecile: it's like the punk rulebook got codified and then it was all non-punk influences, women and gays get out. My friend disagrees, but he was in Madison where it was more politically conscious. In Detroit, that's what happened.
	12:45pm fred: Maybe we old farts need a manifesto, something we can defend from these youngsters. Woolf penned "a room of one's own", who will dare to write "a lawn of one's own", just so that we can scream at those damn kids to get off it
	12:46pm Cecile: People like the Necros, John Brannon, Die Kreuzen moved out of that pretty damn fast when it got that way.
	12:47pm Cecile: not for every show. A lot of the SST bands drew a varied crowd.
	12:48pm Cecile: And the Grumpy's 13 show was great because the girls that came with their boyfriends were probably the girls who went to HC shows solo in the 80s.

	12:49pm Stevel: Madison was interesting, and a bit mellower than other areas. Not very likely to get hurt at a show, unless you were looking for it. Girls weren't a complete rarity, but, the slam-dance floor was very much a place for adolescent male energy. There were definitely girls who held their own.
	12:53pm Cecile: Yeah. I think a lot of girls and short guys got turned off by the pit. I know I did. But standing back further ended up being better because you could actually watch the band.
