My guest today is JERRY A of Poison Idea! He should be here by 12:20! If you've got questions, let em rip now!

Hey Diane..

Many fond memories of Poison Idea gigs in Portland.
Truth told, Poison Idea was my first ever punk show at the Satyricon.
Avatar 12:08pm
Cecile:

No weird questions:
Did you play much with the Wipers? Were they a big influence on you?

Whose chest got cut into on that one album cover?

Whose record collection was on the cover of the "Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes" 45? Did you have a pretentious asshole record collector in mind?

Did you ever play outside the West Coast? I don't remember you guys making it to Detroit back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
common:

how was the show in philly last eve?
Avatar 12:09pm
Cecile:

see, normal questions.
Avatar 12:10pm
Cecile:

yes! I love this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm

Jerry: Do you remember trying to take a KGON Defenders of Rock t-shirt off of some surfer-looking dude? It was my clueless friend Jay and we dragged him to a punk show and I don't think he ever went to another one after that.
Avatar 12:11pm
Jim Devoid:

Question for Jerry A:Was alcohol somehow involved when the ceiling of the Lismar Lounge in NY caught fire when you all played there in the early 90's?
Avatar 12:12pm
northguineahills:

I somehow missed Code of Honer (at least in my memory).

Whoa! This is a weird version. Not like the LP. Is it from Cows N' Beer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

Ooooooh, Die Kreusen. Always a pleaser, back in the day. One of my favorite full-out rock screams.

Zero Boys tonight!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm

Somewhere, I have a great (not really) photo of the back of the DKreuzen's vocalist's throat.

Where are Zero Boys?

What a set!
Avatar 12:17pm

now a question for you, Diane, how was that Wrekmaster Harmonies show? Was JR Robinson all intense 'n' shit?

YEAH I LOVE THIS SONG.
Avatar 12:17pm
Jim:

I know they played there in the 90s..it was a big deal..a bunch of people I know went..

OH ZERO BOYS ON NOW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Rich in Washington:

Poison Idea's Tom did a helluva radio show in the mid-80s on KBOO. Not sure if it was a regular show or if he just guested on someone else's show but it was fantastic. Maybe Jerry remembers something about it.
I still have a bunch of cassettes of it.
Avatar 12:20pm
Jim:

This reminds me of HAPPY FLOWERS
Avatar 12:21pm
Cecile:

More and more I'm getting the feeling that the old HC bands are getting the treatment the hippies gave the old bluesmen. Except the bands obviously have more control over the output. it's kind of weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
fred:

Dumb question, feel free to ignore: any chance of a show in Paris, France? If so, how can I make sure I hear about it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Rich in Washington:

@Cecile: Yeah, the Killed By Death series is like Folkways Records for Punk.
Avatar 12:24pm

Exactly. And everyone is trying to memorize the licks.

If people keep working derivatively (HUGE word for me) we should be down to one-note songs in no time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Stevel:

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Motorhead!

(Played this song 25 times in a row, one night, driving. It did not get old.)

Punk is no longer a workable label for a musical genre. Punk once meant Pere Ubu, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, Sex Pistols... etc, etc, etc. The mark keeps moving.

punk is an attitude..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Rich in Washington:

Green Day & Offspring sound so lame and neutered. I can't see how anyone could be excited by that. I also can't fathom the style of music now called Hardcore - that screechy screamo music. It's silly. It's the howl of some kid who got a Jetta for graduation instead of the Audi they asked for.
Avatar 12:31pm
Jim:

CARRRRRRRRRCASS...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Didn't screemo stop being a thing 10 years ago?

But I am old. It's like the old geezer still bitching about kids and their baggy pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Stevel:

Reading "From the Velvets to the Voidoids by Clinton Heylin (Thanks to someone on this board, I believe.) Fascinating how what became "Punk" came from bands/non bands moving as far away from accepted genres and performance norms as possible. Long, endless jams and other often tedious exercises made up the foundation.
Avatar 12:34pm
InBrkly:

@JimDevoid: I was going to ask the same question about 924 Gilman back in 89. Everclear and a lighter nearly brought the place down. People threw wet tshirts at the rafters.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I have free Sirius on my car radio for the next couple of weeks. They should play some of Diane's selections instead of G 'n' R on their hard rock channels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, it really draws you in doesn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm

Pig was such a fierce guitar player. Even his tinny-sounding axe on Pick Your Kings is incredible.
Avatar 12:36pm

Today's show is so good, even lurkers need to stop their work and give an approving nod.

Diane is reliving her early days of being a DJ right now...and it kicks ass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm

I remember seeing PI for the first time and was stunned by how not punk Pig/Tom looked and what a kick-ass guitar player he was live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes, Diane, this set rocks plenty! Great choices!
Avatar 12:40pm
Cecile:

Many of these I played on air back in the day.
Of course mixed up withe everything else you could imagine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Stevel:

Rich in Washington: Many best music memories for me were encountering bands who did not 'look' like they were 'supposed to'. Even though I was raised on Glam, I loved the way people fucked with or ignored image.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, also very fluid
Avatar 12:40pm
Cecile:

Rich, some of the toughest bands back in the day looked completely normal. It was kinda funny.
Avatar 12:40pm
Jim:

I need to go get lunch..but I don't want to miss anything..then again..I own everything that has been played so far..but It's JUST NOT THE SAME
Avatar 12:41pm
Cecile:

ha, stevel, exactly.
Avatar 12:41pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Yep, this old fart is transformed. Quite a time machine, this set. All it's missing is the crunchy drop-out of old cassette compilations that have been eaten by cheap boom-boxes too often.
Avatar 12:42pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Jim: That's my issue exactly. And the food truck of choice is just 2 blocks away. Arms too short. Stupid arms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Rich in Washington:

@Cecile: I remember lots of cool kids at punk shows who just had their own look and not the stereotypical punk look until around '83 or so and then everyone started looking the same. Seems like girls stopped showing up unless they were someone's girlfriend, too.
Avatar 12:43pm

Ciminy, I have the same dilemma as Jim. Time for food. Be back soonish.
Avatar 12:45pm
Cecile:

it's like the punk rulebook got codified and then it was all non-punk influences, women and gays get out. My friend disagrees, but he was in Madison where it was more politically conscious. In Detroit, that's what happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
fred:

Maybe we old farts need a manifesto, something we can defend from these youngsters. Woolf penned "a room of one's own", who will dare to write "a lawn of one's own", just so that we can scream at those damn kids to get off it
Avatar 12:46pm
Cecile:

People like the Necros, John Brannon, Die Kreuzen moved out of that pretty damn fast when it got that way.
Avatar 12:47pm
Cecile:

not for every show. A lot of the SST bands drew a varied crowd.
Avatar 12:48pm
Cecile:

And the Grumpy's 13 show was great because the girls that came with their boyfriends were probably the girls who went to HC shows solo in the 80s.
Avatar 12:49pm
Cecile:

Not girls, good Lord. The women.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Stevel:

Madison was interesting, and a bit mellower than other areas. Not very likely to get hurt at a show, unless you were looking for it. Girls weren't a complete rarity, but, the slam-dance floor was very much a place for adolescent male energy. There were definitely girls who held their own.
Avatar 12:53pm
Cecile:

Yeah. I think a lot of girls and short guys got turned off by the pit. I know I did. But standing back further ended up being better because you could actually watch the band.

For a split second I thought we were going to hear Stones' 200 Light Years.. but this is way better.

I was on them tickets the moment they sprang from the womb, followed by a levitating afterbirth of stars & nebulae...

Reminds me of the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull.

Hawkwind aged better than I thought they would. I won't see them though. Not even sure when they play around here, but I'm sure it'll be way beyond what I can afford

I've been hooked on HW since maybe age 10, seems like they might be finally getting some recognition in the states for the first time since that '74 (?) tour. Thanks to this re-issue & such. Good time to come back to the states.

@fred: tickets for DC were in the 20-25 range i think. Not horribly horrible.

@RTD: I came to HW through Moorcock, they outlasted my interest in his books. Unfortunately, I expect that range to inflate to around €50, that's usually the rate around here. I'll keep an eye out in case of a good surprise. Though I'll be spending next Saturday on a 9-hours Zorn-fest, I will probably regret those euros when they're gone

Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: ah, so my aforementioned 20-25 were $USD. Haven't seen Brock & co. since '89, so I'm stupidly happy about all this. Some of Moorcock still appeals (Cornelius) but much of it hasn't been touched since teenage days.

This whole show is one for the altar of yum-yum.

@RTD: To my growing dismay, there seems to be less and less room in Paris for gigs between €5 and €50. I'll stick with the former, but this situation sucks

My problem with Moorcock is that he /frequenly/ revises subsequent printings of his work. I don't want to buy the same book 3 times.
