- have you read 'This Is Your Brain on Music' ? :

...I wonder if you'd like it or not. Your review would be interesting!
Jason Elbogen:
Listen to DJ writes, not what he says (after spending 2 hours to get to the station).

...I can never say Thx enuff for the life assist FMU provides in hours between waking & work. Well, I could, but I hope I don't.

I haven't heard of that book, although for a moment I thought you were linking me this article that an old friend emailed me with the subject heading: "YOU ARE LIVING A LIE". The
article itself is titled: We Don't Like Unfamiliar Music, Even Though We Claim We Do
Check it out--

...Levitin does address the Familiar/Novel issue - & concludes the *Balance* is critical. What would be interesting would be to test FMUheads against a sample group! Seems to me what's Familiar &/or Novel will depend on how much you listen to - but given background music more & more people hear - maybe that means less than I think by sheer 'hours'...Some get to a point where they're more interested in where the Stones got the stuff than hearing the Stones again - & some never care...I think of stuff Zappa (I think) said about many just want aural wallpaper...&tc. ...
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
- then what's 'familiar' &/or 'novel' has to mean different things to dif. people
...it just shifts the question, or leads to another Q of what makes these people dif. from each other...

- Relating to your Link - I consider myself having 'Eclectic' tastes obviously - but come back often to Favorites (Hendrix-Who-Beatles, Coltrane-Monk, others)
- just like one might have staples in food diet one eats often - partly for basic nutrition - partly because of budget
- but feel the need for variety & new spices...even in terms of where the food is!...
Jason Elbogen:
The food analogy works very well for me. My diet's radically different now than when I was young, but I still enjoy burgers/fries/pizza.
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
...On Meghan's UTP yesterday, she announced her next theme was cheezy 80s & I got to talking about how people around here where I am (NH) who are just a little (to a bit...) younger than me are reallly into this MTV 80s Top40 - which leaves me utterly dumbfounded...

I don't listen much to what I liked in high school (New Order and early REM being the only ones I still listen to, and occasionally at that). As for my college favorites, Juliana Hatfield and Kathleen Hanna are still on my playlist, but that's it.
