Good morning, Michael. Totally agree about the low expectations for the CBGB movie based on the trailer. Looks stink-o. I'll stick with the #1 hits.

I had a long and involved dream last night, and that very song, "That's Cool, That's Trash," was at the core of it! And Todd-O-Phonic Todd made a cameo appearance, appropriately.

Duck Dunn and Al Jackson only play on a couple of songs on Elvis' Stax sessions, but not that one. I believe that they were only in the studio in Elvis for one day. On the rest of the Stax sessions, the musicians were a combination of Elvis' road band (including James Burton) and Memphis session guys like Reggie Young and Tommy Cogbill.

Hey Michael. Great job on "I Can Hear Music". I've been loving it! I needed some #1 hits!
  11:59am
scott:

BTW, the Elvis At Stax set is pretty cool. It's not consistently great, but it kind of belies the common misperception that Elvis totally lost his way on record in the '70s. The material is a little spotty, but the performances show that Elvis still had it pretty together, at least talent-wise, in 1973.

There is no doubt that for a long time The Col. refused to let Elvis record songs that they couldnt get some of the publishing on - I think...
  12:12pm

Leiber and Stoller quit working with Elvis after a short time due to the Colonel's publishing greed. Imagine how much great work they could have done together if the Col. hadn't been so penny-wise/pound-foolish.

...look forward to checking all these Links! :
...Beatles & Tambourine - 2009 Remasters made that notable! George Martin has said that he's worked w/ a few people - but the young Beatles seemed to have a quick & natural genius for Arrangement (...obviously) - which is itself a word that has sort of slyly got my attention more & more lately...& I wonder about generally...

- Crosby has been a LeoMonster awlright: read his autbio. 'LongTimeGone' - he took the drug thing just as far as it would go - w/ all the impact on friends that that implies!
- @ same time - I think he deserves a lotta cred for things he don't often get - like bringing Coltrane Jazz & Shankar Indian stuff to the Byrds & in fact to George & the Beatles (& hence whole World) too! His broad outlook, i.e. ...

...in fact - if DavidCrosby had done no more than sing harmonies on the Byrds' 1st album (esp. Bells of Rhymney) - that'd go pretty far w/ me!...McGuinn talks overtly about meeting Crosby & right away having to weigh personality against talent - just by instinct (to paraphrase)...

Never having met David Crosby and never anticipating meeting him, I can say that his personal reputation as a noxious maladroit doesn't concern me. Especially when I play the sublime Airport Song off Preflyte.

Queens L. Bow:

Cool, thanks! That's true about Elvis & the Colonel; I think generally he wouldn't let Elvis record a song without getting a cut of the publishing (this is mentioned in the liner notes to "The Memphis Record" collection). That's why Elvis never performed outside North America, why he did almost no TV, why he kept doing all those crummy movies. As to why Elvis didn't break with him, there are probably plenty of theories about that, but if only he did....imagine Spector, or John Lennon, or Phil Ramone getting a bunch of top rock & roll players to do an album with him. What could have been....

my understanding is that elvis only performed in the u.s and canada because the colonel had a criminal record and couldn't go anywhere, and if the colonel didn't go, elvis didn't go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

Elvis didn't perform outside North America because the Colonel couldn't travel outside NA and would never let Elvis out of his sight. You do know the Colonel was an immigrant from the Netherlands in the US illegally, yes? He couldn't apply for a passport without risking getting his ass deported back to Breda.

he'd probably get more respect if he wasn't so fucking good looking, not that i hold that against him or anything.
  1:01pm
Queens L. Bow:

GF & others: Yep, I knew all that, just didn't want to make the post longer. There was a bio of the Colonel a few years ago that revealed/confirmed this (his criminal past, immigration status, etc.) & I wrote a couple of pieces about this for a now-defunct magazine. Now if someone really could write a good script, THAT story would make a great movie: a con man who got lucky, then spent his final years losing his fortune in Vegas.
