	10:35pm john: Ehh, it was decent. A must for big fans. Becky liked it better than I did, but you could say that about Big Star (sacrilege!) too. Half an hour too long, and kind of amateurishly if enthusiastically put together. Should have tugged at the heartstrings about Chilton's death when they showed the SXSW panel the next day, but totally whiffed. And missed the main point, that they shoulda been big as, umm, Badfinger.

	10:40pm Michael from the Left Coast: EFD--you read my mind--I was thinking some of these guys in Stretch must be from Climax Blues Band John--while some of your criticisms are spot on re the Big Star movie, I think they triumphed in making a film about a band which has about a minute and a half of live footage (without sound) in existence and two dead members (not an easy task). I think they went a long way to explain their lack of mainstream success and to me it was strangely touching

I've known Jody for years but we've never once talked about Big Star and after the film he took questions, so I asked if there was ever a time when they played a run of shows or visited a radio station where he thought "this is oing well" or "this is actually got some momentum now" or something similar. He said, "no." Though he said they did play one great show with Badfinger in Boston.

	10:48pm Holly in NC: I first heard Stretch in 'Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels' . Surprised no one here did same! This is most excellent trvia right here: "Classic rock historians will remember the infamous Fleetwood Mac tour of the United States in 1974, because it wasn't actually Fleetwood Mac on tour. After a typically Mac-ian series of departures and personal setbacks, it became clear that FM weren't going to be able to fulfill their obligations to tour the US. So their tour manager Clifford Davis, allegedly with the assistance of Mick Fleetwood, put together an entirely different band specifically to tour the US, with the understanding that Fleetwood would join up the tour at some point. This didn't work very well, because US audiences could tell that Christine McVie, at the time their most distinguishable member because of, well, her gender (and her status as lead singer on many songs), wasn't there. To make matters worse, Fleetwood didn't join the tour, and in fact declaimed having any knowledge whatsoever about the pseudo-Mac band. So the tour was canceled. Daft Punk would never have this problem. 'Cause they wear helmets. Get it? The fake Mac band reformed in 1975 as Stretch and recorded "Why Did You Do It" as a musical retort to Mick Fleetwood. 	10:48pm john: Interesting. That would have been the perfect double bill! One of the directors was at our screening, and she was not a gifted speaker. You came out a lot better than we did! I'll say that Jody Stephens was an entirely engaging and sympathetic voice in the film--you can't help but end up really rooting for him, anyway.

Small crowd, very pleasant environment in a beautiful old theater, but she was both happy to talk about her film and oddly uncomfortable at the same time. Also, having done it for years, public speaking is a weird thing, to be sure.

The Ramones made more money and are more widely known post breakup than while they were together

	11:08pm BadGuyZero: Did Big Star open for Badfinger only one time? If so, I have a bootleg of the show [March 31, 1974]. Big Star's gear was stolen the night before and they were playing on borrowed gear. I saw the version of Big Star that included Ken and Jon from The Posies when I lived in Seattle. I got to meet Alex and Jody after the show and spend about half an hour talking with them. Really nice guys.

	11:39pm Danne D: G's link sent me down the wormhole of reading the whole Yes history on their website which is beyond comical in terms of the number of permutations and members. It also made me feel really old as it's been over 20 years since the most comical alignment - the one they formed for the 8-member MegaYes Union album. Part of the sport of watching them was figuring out the band politics of how and why things went certain ways. The Union tour was done "in the round" which was a nice way of sort of keeping the duplicate members out of each other's way :)

	11:47pm Carmichael: Danne, I saw Yes in '76, and again when my group opened for them in 1998. The 2nd setlist only had 3 new songs, one of them being Owner of a Lonely Heart. As the Holy Modal Rounders said, good taste is timeless.

	11:51pm john: @Holly--Brocade Rock! I love both the Jacobites and later solo material, and even his very last album was one of the strongest. He really matured in the best of ways. The first two discs are a whirlwind best-of, but a lot of it will be post-86, so at least half of that may be newish to you. I'm glad I got it. But I also know a lot of people he really grates on.

It poured, and the grandstand was not filled but at least was covered. It sort of felt like a random assemblage of people found out where Yes goes camping and all hiked up there to join them.

Half an hour too long, and kind of amateurishly if enthusiastically put together. Should have tugged at the heartstrings about Chilton's death when they showed the SXSW panel the next day, but totally whiffed. And missed the main point, that they shoulda been big as, umm, Badfinger.

I think they went a long way to explain their lack of mainstream success and to me it was strangely touching

He said, "no." Though he said they did play one great show with Badfinger in Boston.

This is most excellent trvia right here: "Classic rock historians will remember the infamous Fleetwood Mac tour of the United States in 1974, because it wasn't actually Fleetwood Mac on tour. After a typically Mac-ian series of departures and personal setbacks, it became clear that FM weren't going to be able to fulfill their obligations to tour the US. So their tour manager Clifford Davis, allegedly with the assistance of Mick Fleetwood, put together an entirely different band specifically to tour the US, with the understanding that Fleetwood would join up the tour at some point. This didn't work very well, because US audiences could tell that Christine McVie, at the time their most distinguishable member because of, well, her gender (and her status as lead singer on many songs), wasn't there. To make matters worse, Fleetwood didn't join the tour, and in fact declaimed having any knowledge whatsoever about the pseudo-Mac band. So the tour was canceled. Daft Punk would never have this problem. 'Cause they wear helmets. Get it? The fake Mac band reformed in 1975 as Stretch and recorded "Why Did You Do It" as a musical retort to Mick Fleetwood. I'll say that Jody Stephens was an entirely engaging and sympathetic voice in the film--you can't help but end up really rooting for him, anyway.

Big Star's gear was stolen the night before and they were playing on borrowed gear. I saw the version of Big Star that included Ken and Jon from The Posies when I lived in Seattle. I got to meet Alex and Jody after the show and spend about half an hour talking with them. Really nice guys.

It also made me feel really old as it's been over 20 years since the most comical alignment - the one they formed for the 8-member MegaYes Union album. Part of the sport of watching them was figuring out the band politics of how and why things went certain ways. The Union tour was done "in the round" which was a nice way of sort of keeping the duplicate members out of each other's way :)
