Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from July 12, 2013 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

He has been know to yodel.

His biggest hit was 'I remember Hugh' one of the misheard skool of song.

And on rare occasion, not to!

This is the Free Design?
Avatar 12:25pm
northguineahills:

My criteria for anything "classic" is if it was made before 1992.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Uncle Michael:

That's depressing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Lizardner Dave:

They used to say "it doesn't have to be old to be classic".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
holland oats:

unkie! drumma! peoples! wait, i missed the free design?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Lizardner Dave:

Of course, they said that before 1992.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Uncle Michael:

Who is this "they?"
Avatar 12:30pm
northguineahills:

If something is 22 years or older, and has stood the test of time, it has had time to mature, therefore, it becomes classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Uncle Michael:

Hola Holland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Uncle Michael:

@ngh: riiiiiiiiiiiiight...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Alex In Illinois:

I did not know much about the Louvin Brothers, and I did not know that they sang such a theocratic dominionist number like that one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Uncle Michael:

But boy could they harmonize!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
pacific standard simon:

"Classic rock" -- that'd be stuff with orchestral arrangements, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
listener james from westwood:

there seems to have been a decision at new york's cbs 101.1 to redefine "oldies." it's no longer "stuff from the era of 'american graffiti." not sure if a similar creep has occurred on the so-called classic rock stations in the area. all i know is nyc music radio, outside of wfmu, is a bleak prospect. (inside of wfmu it's quite lovely.)
Avatar 12:41pm
northguineahills:

ie: John Cage's One6 is now a classic (1990).
Avatar 12:41pm
northguineahills:

Woah, nice Nazareth....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Alex In Illinois:

"Classic Rock?" "Oldies?" Doesn't commercial broadcast radio choose a demographic of the population that has money to spend, then decide which kinds of things it will advertize, then figure out what kind of music to play to bring the listeners to the commercials? Then, maybe they hire PR firms to come up with those labels or redefine them or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
pacific standard simon:

Call me old-fashioned, but the progression goes: "moldy oldies"=pre-rock, "oldies"=pre-Beatles rock, "classic rock"=Beatles through Nixon resignation rock. Anything later is just myriad itty-bitty sub-genres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't actually give a shit. There's "good" and "not good."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
listener james from westwood:

agreed, alex. they're broadcasting aural comfort food/nostalgia to soften folks up for the ads. same reason i hear 80s tunes on the muzak/xm box in whole foods and trader joe's. lulls folks into a warm place where they're liable to spend more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah, that's exactly right, Alex.
Avatar 12:55pm
northguineahills:

In some states you can get a classic car plate if your car is 25 years or older.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
pacific standard simon:

Yes, well -- there is that, Uncle.
And "ironic".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Alex In Illinois:

Ouasite outa site it's gone! When I was a kid, I won this single! I hope I still have it in my 45 collection. Maybe it got stolen along with If It Don't Fit Don't Force IT by Kelly Patterson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't do ironic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Uncle Michael:

I do do *long*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
listener james from westwood:

nj is one of those states, ngh. weird to see 1970s station wagons tooling around with their QQ-prefix plates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
listener james from westwood:

again, might be a way to spin gold from nostalgia. but don't listen to me, i'm the one with an obscure science fiction reference on his license plate. :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Uncle Michael:

It's that way hear. It would be cool to put "ANTIQUE" on an '88 Civic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Jeff Golick:

Tardy. Feeling classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Alex In Illinois:

Mmmmm. Stereo drum solo! (Said like Homer Simpson experiencing pleasure).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Jeff Golick:

Always had to laugh when hearing a Boston station's promo cart: "Playing the greatest hits of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s!!"

Way to limit yourselves, guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm

Brian in UK:

Oooooh Matron.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
pacific standard simon:

Sorry, got distracted by a telecommuting spouse. I was just going to say that I DO do ironic -- it's pretty much the only way I can listen to something like "Billy, Don't Be A Hero".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
pacific standard simon:

Of course, the standards of a DJ (an active music enjoyer) and a listener (a passive music enjoyer) are bound to be somewhat different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Uncle Michael:

If I'm playing a comp that contains BDBAH, I may not skip it. If I play something on the show that seems ironic...it's not...there's something about it that I have genuine affection for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
pacific standard simon:

I would assume so -- but I'm not always going to be able to share it. So, in that case, I might spin fables in my head about the differences between us that allow you to like it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Uncle Michael:

Rightly so. it takes all kinds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Alex In Illinois:

In any case, it is much nicer to listen to music that someone wants to share with you because he or she wants you to hear the music itself, as opposed to music that is being played in order to get you to buy $#!+.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Uncle Michael:

I was just about to try and sell you some shit. damn.
  1:39pm
Grubbus:

that's why music was invented...to be heard..not commoditized
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah...but popular music *is* a commodity. And I'm fine with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
pacific standard simon:

I love "Peanut Vendor" almost as much as "Skokiaan" and "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
listener james from westwood:

i should say i am entirely susceptible to musical suggestion during wfmu pledge times. even for cuts that aren't on premiums or prizes. :) belock opened a marathon show with "shake some action" once and i nearly signed over a paycheck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Alex In Illinois:

Whatever. I had another drooling-like-Homer-Simpson momment with those harmonicas in stereo doing Manicero/Peanut Vendor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Alex In Illinois:

That "Whatever" was to the stuff about music being a commodity. I understand Listener James From Westwood's experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Uncle Michael:

I love that something I love...someone else may kinda like...and something I think is a bit cool...someone else might love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Alex In Illinois:

The wfmu pledge time experience, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
pacific standard simon:

Come to think of it, those 3 songs would be the beginning of a wonderful marathon premium. Hell, throw in "Tico Tico", too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
pacific standard simon:

Uh-huh, UM. There's only about a half-dozen Guess Who songs that I get really excited about, but I like finding out what else in their catalog is on your "must hear" list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Uncle Michael:

Meta kills conversation, dead!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
pacific standard simon:

This one would be a 7-10 split for me, between the ironic interest in the Hair-style harmonies, and the genuine interest in the pre-Mark Knopfler guitar part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Uncle Michael:

It's total yacht rock...it's CSN meets Doobies...I just dig pop craft. It's in my musical DNA.
Avatar 2:11pm
glenn:

jimmy webb won 8 grammies in 1968. that's all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
pacific standard simon:

It's something I enjoy, too -- if not quite as thoroughly. Nick Lowe didn't turn me into a Bay City Rollers fan, but he did help me appreciate what was going on there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Uncle Michael:

Yep, just 8.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

Wheel of Fortune by Kay Starr! I remember playing a 78 rpm record of this on a furniture-sized Radio+Phonograph at my Grandmother's house. The record might have been my Mom's or Uncle's.

You might find an Ellroy typo!

I tend to think of the Zombies as part of a continuum that continues with Spirit, and then Steely Dan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
Uncle Michael:

Hmmm...interesting...The Zombies/Spirit timeline might not line up right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
